Punjab's Progress At An All Time Low

Recommended Posts

Another idea:

What about farmers using say an acre of their land to build processing plants for their crops?

Maybe a number of farmers from a region could get together and share expenses for this and benefit cooperatively? They could then sell their services to other peasants?

Look, even if it wasn't the 'politics', the way landholdings have to be divided into smaller pieces and passed on to sons (say if you have 3) in itself would case problems with constant dwindling over generations. So this focus on government bogeymen as the sole source of Panjab's problems is a red herring.

Our economy is way too narrow for us to be in anything but a mess. It needs to be MUCH wider in scope. It will take creativity to develop this.

Sadly most people right now seem content to generally continue doing as has always been done.

Yeah the government isn't solely to blame. A lot of it does come down to jamindaar farmers.

After having read the posts above from people who know about the issues facing Panjab a lot more than I do, then surely the situation Panjab finds itself in is a mixture of both, i.e. the Indian as well as Panjabi adminstration conspiring against the Panjabi people, and the people of Panjab not helping themselves as best they should?

Never in the history of the world has a nation that is occupied by a foreign country through trickery and lies, actually done well. So the real surprise here is that some are surprised at Punjab's sad demise.

The problem is the people of Panjab themselves don't realise this. Well, either they do realise it but their minds are too befuddled to do anything about it. There just seems to be an overwhelming amount of apathy from resident Panjabis. It's like their head isn't in the "game".

Never in the history of the world has a nation that is occupied by a foreign country through trickery and lies, actually done well. So the real surprise here is that some are surprised at Punjab's sad demise.

Disappointing as the figures are WLS, particularly in light of the fact that commodity prices are quite robust and Punjab gains from the NRI remittances+investment+tourism factor ... there is no need to completely write off the Punjabi "slaves" as you like to describe them just yet. Bihar's growth was building from a far lower base - with a population four times bigger than Punjab ... the size of Bihar's economy has only just overtaken Punjab ... meaning that per capita Bihari's generally earn about of quarter of what Punjabi's do. Punjab is still the most electricified state and still has the best infrastructure for a state in terms of roadways (Gurgaon part of Haryana notwithstanding). Enterprising landowning Sikhs have shown their talent in the transportation industry (and you often see Sandhu Transport trucks in Bollywood films! :-)

If the Badals can do a reasonable job, Punjab can potentially record 50% aggregate growth in the next 5 years (=8.45%pa), which would transform Punjab incredibily. Coupled with harmonious communal relations in Punjab that would encourage NRI's and MNC's to increase their investments in Punjab simultaneously. Food prices are only likely to go one way in the next 5 years. Note how SAD were happy with FDI (whereas the BJP were not). The breakthrough we need to make is that those who hold uneconomic small landholdings need to become urban and copy UK Sikhs and that all rural Sikhs need to focus exclusively on education and remember what the enemies did in 1947+1984.

UK Sikhs are from an overwhelmingly rural background but now have the highest level of home ownership in the UK of any community. All sub-sections of the UK Sikh community are savvy about business. There's no reason why all Sikhs from a non-urban background can't one day attempt to compete with the traditional Hindu Bania of Punjab in the private sector and incorporating businesses ... provided education, education, education and thereafter access to finance for entrepreneurs are the mantra. Neither would it surprise me if the Badals classify Jatts within the "Other Backward Classes" category before 2017 as an electoral sop. If only we Sikhs can ensure equality within the Panth ... then reservation would not even be needed in Punjab.

In short, and most importantly, I humbly ask you to try and see how we Sikhs are totally in this economic war of survival together (we sink or swim together) and why it's vital rural landholding Sikhs are at the forefront of some social changes which will in turn pay them and other Sikhs dividends in the future. Check out how the record paddy harvest will benefit the brewers via grain stores allowing the rice to rot deliberately etc, etc
