’84 riots: Amitabh pleads innocence before Akal Takht

Perneet Singh/TNS

Amritsar, December 1 2011

Taking a note of allegations of provoking anti-Sikh riots in 1984 levelled against him, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has written a letter to the Akal Takht Jathedar, pleading his innocence in the matter.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh revealed this while addressing a press conference at the Akal Takht Secretariat here today.

The Jathedar said Amitabh’s letter would come up for discussion at a meeting of Sikh high priests on December 5. Amitabh had handed over his letter, addressed to the Jathedar, to Gurinder Singh Bawa who is an SGPC member from Mumbai at the latter’s residence on November 28.

Along with the letter, the megastar has enclosed some photographs to highlight his family’s Sikh background. Sharing the contents of the letter, the Jathedar said Amitabh had written that he too was associated with Sikhism as his mother, Teji Bachchan, belonged to a Sikh family.

To corroborate his point, the actor has also attached the photograph of his mother Teji Bachchan and maternal grandfather Saudagar Singh, who was a “keshdhari” Sikh. Amitabh said his family also believed in Sikhism. He dubbed the allegations of provoking anti-Sikh riots in 1984 against him as “baseless”, adding that such charges have hurt his sentiments. He admitted he had been close to the Gandhi family and had been sharing their joys and sorrows. He, however, clarified that he was in no way involved in any activity like inciting riots against the Sikhs.

The issue regarding Amitabh’s alleged role in provoking anti-Sikh riots had come to the fore prior to the recent inauguration of “Virasat-e-Khalsa” at Anandpur Sahib. Various Sikh organisations had lodged a protest against the state government’s plan to invite the superstar to the event. Later, the Akal Takht Jathedar doused the protests by stating that no film star had been invited to the inaugural ceremony.

Meanwhile, in view of today’s developments, the Jathedar said they would also give a chance to the Sikh organisations, which were levelling charges against Amitabh, to present their case before reaching a decision in that regard.

New Delhi, April 12: The alleged role of Amitabh Bachchan during anti-Sikh riots in 1984 still haunts the Bollywood superstar.A main witness in the case, Jagdish Kaur on Friday, April 12 asked as why actor Amitabh Bachchan had not been booked for fuelling anti-Sikh sentiments during interviews and TV appearances. The 70-year-old actor is said to have made hate speech against Sikh community in the wake of assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During the anti-Sikh riots several Sikhs were killed by alleged Congress party workers."I watched live relay on Doordarshan and saw Amitabh Bachchan raising his arm and shouting the slogan, ‘khun ka badla khun sae laengae' (Blood for blood) two times," said Kaur.Kaur, then 42, saw a mob killing her husband and son in front of her eyes. She had also witnessed her three brothers being burnt alive by a mob. But, Bachchan denies the allegations. In 2011, he wrote a letter to Akal Takht denying any role in anti-Sikh riots."I wish to take this opportunity to vehemently and categorically deny these allegations against me which are completely baseless, false and untrue. The Nehru-Gandhi family and our family have old ties from our city of origin, Allahabad. We have been together in each other's hour of grief and joy, but to allege that I was a part of the crowd that incited them to raise anti-Sikh slogans is a preposterous and blatant lie.Quite contrarily, I have always propagated the soothing of injured feelings and the maintenance of serenity. The unfortunate incidents of the riots of 1984 against the Sikhs shall always remain a blot and a dark phase in the history of our country, a country that prides itself in its secular credentials," Bachchan wrote in the letter.Recently, Delhi court set aside CBI's closure report giving senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler a clean chit and ordering reopening of probe into the killing of three persons during anti-Sikh riots. In its order on Wednesday, the court had also faulted CBI for not examining the available witnesses.

Dont hold your breath...Akal Takht is no longer the free throne of Sikh Soveriegnity that Guru Hargobind Maharaj created.. Ever since the British inspired SGPC were created Akal Takht and SGPC themselves are nothing more than puppets of the Government first it was the British now it's the Bhraministic Delhi establishment. This is why you see so many cowardly and anti-panth, anti-Sikh decisions coming from them...

Examples:

- Clean chit to Rada Soamis after demolishing a Gurdwara.

- Avtar Singh Makkar, president SGPC after initially supporting Sada Haq..all of a sudden after pressure from Badal now says it was a mistake to support the film...

- If SGPC and Akal Takht are independant..why are neither of them attempting to implement the Anandpur Sahib Resolution established by Sarbat Khalsa ???

Sikhs need to free themselves from the corrupt organisations of SGPC and Akali Dal/Badal. Until we have real panthic leaders in charge of our organisations there will never be any progress for the Panth

A bachan was the first to greet Rajiv after his mothers assassination, rajiv was in some other part of India when Indra was popped of. Rajiv was brought in by Helicopter, bachan was as this airport to meet Rajiv when he was brought in

A Bachan was on the front line at the funeral, greeting people and organising.

To organise and provoke people in the Delhi riots you would need money and influence, Bachan had both of these, weather he did .......... its kind of possible
