What's your favourite Raag in Gurbani?. Please share..!!

you did mean singular right? cos some inc yourself have mentioned a few. Im not going to play if you change the rules.

Sri Kalyan, Sri Sarang, Sri Basant, Raag Kanra from top of my head.

these raags dont have the prefix "sri", only Raag Sri Raag does, because it is Shromani Raag, shortened to Sri Raag, or Raag Sri Raag. These raags all follow. Dont make this mistake again Neo, cos you've made me angry already.

wow, im just gettin into raags, not heard many but of those i have, i love.

how can i learn more about them and listen to more as my search on youtube does not get very far.

thanku ji.

Bhenji, follow this link:

http://www.jawadditaksal.org/index.php/General/raag-siri.html

There is an index of all 31 Raags on the left hand side. When you click on any notation image...a window/tab opens for the audio of that particular shabad.

I personally found it a wonderful compilation!

oh thankuji so much penji, will look at it. i personally found myself some effect it has on me listening to raags, more than other type shabads. i do not understand the raags, but do in my own way, cannot explain it, but since i started listening a in darbar sahib, i felt i heard them before, and connected in a way which i cannot even describe if i try.

From the perspective of gurmat, every raag in SGGS has to be our favourite with Sri Raag as the 'boss' of all raags. Gurbani recited, sung and heard in any raag of SGGS has the potential to transport us into the realms of chardikela and Gurujee's Charan Kamal.

One thing a student of raag learns by listening to the kirtan of 'swaragvasi' Ragi Dharam Singh Zakhmi, or existing raagis such as Bhai Nirmal Singh, Bhai Balbir Singh etc is that it is the knowledge, skill, and ability of a kirtania play a crucial role in bringing out the intrinsic beauty of any raag of SGGS. In the late 70s, I was privileged to listen to kirtan by Ragi Dharam Singh Zakhmi's kirtanee jatha every evening for around 2 months continously on their tour of SE Asia and every evening they would sing about 3 shabads in 3 different raags(apart from morning Asa ki // involving a bouquet of morning raags). This made me realise that all raags are equally beautiful even though their technicalities (e.g gharana, pakar, roh, avroh, vadi and savadi sur, leh, vilambata, etc etc) differ. A blessed and skilled raagi through Gurujee's kirpa can sing Gurbanee kirtan in any raag to connect atma to Paramatma.

Saying that, it is interesting and encouraging to read of the personal favourites of our veers and bhenjee's here, though, no one I think, mentioned Raag Jaijavantee which is utterly mysterious and absolutely fascinating and was used by our Ninth Patshah, Guru Tegh Bahadur Jee. It is a 'stand alone' kind of raag that doesnt group itself like the solace generating 'sorath, tilang, sarang' cluster or the deep mystical 'madhuvantee, sriraag, malkauns, gauree, majh, chandrakauns, kanra' cluster or the 'asavari, asa, todi, bhairavee, bheroh' morning cluster, or the lighter 'bhimpalasi, dhanasri, kalyan, devghandharee, kalavati, shivranjanee, etc' cluster. I would encourage those whose kirtan abhiyaas includes practising raags to play around with this raag(jaijavantee), which is absolutely awesome and deserves so much more attention.

I am very proud and encouraged that the next upcoming generation of Sikhs such as those on this forum have such a deep interest and love for Gurbanee in Raag form. I could not have wished for more for your generatio,n in terms of this interest.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
