Singhs Tying their Jooras at the Backs of Their Heads and Wearing Bandanas

Hello,

I've noticed a disturbing new fashion trend among young singhs.

It used to annoy me when I'd see young singhs with substantial dharis wearing patkas instead of proper pags. I don't get it. I think a patka with a beard looks sloppy, childish, and embarrassing. But many young men think a proper pagri makes them stand out more and wearing a patka helps them slip under the radar.

Now, many young men have taken it a step further. Patkas still make it a bit difficult to "hide" since the joora is sticking out on top. So the latest "innovation" is to tie the joora at the back of the head and then cover the head with a bandana.

This is just embarrassing.

Why are young Sikh men so ashamed of the traditional Sikh appearance? They'd rather look like a random guy with a dhari wearing a bandana than look like proper Singh.

In Punjab, men used to wear turbans with pride. A man's turban was his crown. Sikhs took pride in being recognizable rather than being able to go unnoticed.

It's sad to see young men so desperate to look like anything but a Singh. Who will respect the dastar when the very men who should wear it with pride run away from it?

Does anyone know where, when and why this trend started? What can we do to instill some pride in the youth?

Yeah, it's been happening for ages in India. I guess some of these guys are a bit young and are experimenting, lol. They'll mature and realise the folly of their ways.

In Canada you see it everywhere now. All over these guys have their patkas tied durag style and have fitted caps on top.

From what I've seen, most of these guys are wanna be gangsters. Just yesterday I saw a singh, if you can call him that, wearing a durag style patka, smoking next to his car with the speakers blasting music.

He was very cool......

I saw it myself last summer in Delhi. You can't even tell if the dude is a Sardar or a Muslim. Getting funny looks from Hindus when I had a dumalla on was expected, but it was interesting to get them from these "Sardars" too. Or maybe its just me, outright ugly! :D

Hmm ... I was aware that there were Singhs wearing patkas and sometimes covering them with caps (usually the "urban" Sikhs in Delhi ... Sikhs living in rural areas would get ridiculed for dressing like that)

However, I did not know that they wore their jooras at the back

It's not just wanna-be gangsters now!

I've lots of Singhs who don't portray themselves as gangsters at all dressed like that, especially in England!

yup kids at my school do this, they wanna be kale. some even have ears pieced!

At least they still keep their kesh and have some loyalty to Sikhi. A patka is a just a small keski after all, I dont really know what the big deal is. A patka takes about three seconds to put on compared to a dastaar which takes alot longer. It is more secure, more practical, more comfortable and less likely to fall off when doing physical activity or in a fight for example.

Dont get me wrong, the dastaar is what it should be. Dastaar is the crown of a Sikhi and looks better. However, peoples reasons for choosing to wear a patka from a practical perspective does not seem absurd to me.

patka i think is fine if your going gym or footy but otherwise should be a dastarr

You are right that they are still keeping their kesh. Wearing a patka or bandana is not a violation of the Sikh religious code. I wear a patka when I'm exercising (but never at any other time).

However, they are running away from the typical Sikh look and trying to "hide". It makes it look like they are ashamed to be Sikhs with uncut hair and that they are trying to disassociate themselves from other keshdhari Sikhs. It makes them look like they have low self-esteem, and it reinforces the notion that sardars are unattractive and that the sardar "brand" (as you put it some time ago) is not something one would want to be associated with.

When a Sikh wears a nicely tied pag, it says that he/she is proud to be Sikh and wants the whole world to know it. I think if you are going to be a Sikh with uncut hair, you should go all out and do it right.

I think it’s unfair to tie the patka to drugs and gangsters. Some of these kids have been growing up with parents who did not accept the fact that their kids did not want to have a patka, so they are not allowed to take it off. I understand that it is a crown to some, but even if these kids realize that they are not religious,  their parents wont let them take it off. I know people who feel like its not for them after 19 years of having it, but now they cannot take it off because of stigma in the community. Don’t judge these kids who haven’t been educated on the religion. Educate them on it, teach them, don’t hate them.
