Learning The Vajja At Home!

Recommended Posts

Sikh soldiers doing simple kirtan with a dolki and maybe shainay as well, during WW1 in a barn located in Le Sart, France (1915)

They may be doing raag kirtan, as the initial raag is coming from the voice. Instruments are there to backup the voice and add the rass to the voice. If any of these soldiers had been trained in Gurmat Sangeet. then it's highly likely they would have a good knowledge of raags.

The date indicates this would be just before the turning point in the Gurmat Sangeet tradition as just about a decade later, the vaja was just being introduced to the Sikh sangat for the first time.

Also seeing as the vaja was popular in europe in those days, it would have been that none of these Sikhs knew how to play it, even if they had seen it.
