City Sikhs begin relay hunger strike in fight for prisoners' release

By Jyoti Shelar, Mumbai Mirror | Jan 5, 2015, 08.13 AM IST

Mumbai's Sikh community has started a relay fast in support of Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, an activist who has been on an infinite hunger strike since November 14 demanding the release of seven Sikh prisoners convicted on various charges and who are languishing in prisons since the 1990s.

With Khalsa, 48, set to stop taking even water today, the 3,50,000-strong Sikh community in Mumbai started their relay fast in his support. On Sunday evening, sixty people ended a 30-hour long fast, with another group gearing up to resume the relay strike in the morning.

The hunger strike began at 4 pm on Saturday following a rally of 200 people from Vikhroli to the Dasmesh Darbar in GTB Nagar, Mumbai's largest and most important gurudwara.

Khalsa is fighting for seven Sikhs who were convicted in 1995 for their actions during the separatist movement and have spent more than 20 years in jail. His supporters cite examples of convicts from other communities whose sentences have been commuted after 14 years and also the fact that normalcy has returned to the state.

Three convicts for whom Khalsa is fighting for were sentenced to life in prison in connection with the assassination of the then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. The seven are now in various prisons in Punjab, Karnataka and UP.

"We want justice for the prisoners and peace for the community," said Mohindarjit Singh, 83, a retired naval officer, who was the oldest in the first fasting group. "We are a community that has been at the forefront when it comes to fighting for the country." The first group included 15 women and two children - a 9-yearold and a 10-year-old.

Senior advocate and human rights activist Harvinder Singh Phoolka -who has been at the forefront of the fight for justice for the 1984 riot victims -said the government should consider these cases. "According to law, after 14 years, every life convict should be considered for remission of sentence. And after 20 years, the law totally allows the granting of remission," said Phoolka.

Though the current protests are about the seven convicts, Kulwant Singh, a member of United Sikhs for Humanity, said 106 Sikhs are languishing in various Indian jails at present. The community in Mumbai is now trying to galvanise more support for Khalsa's struggle.

"So many Sikh prisoners are languishing in jails and many have not even got fair trials. It is simply unfair," said Kulwant Singh.

The community has planned a massive protest at Azad Maidan on January 7, where they plan to turn up with black bands around their mouths. Announcements have been made at all city gurdwaras and pamphlets have been distributed to seek support.

"We want to get as many people as possible to continue with the hunger strike till our demand is fulfilled," said Kulwant.

By Sunday, Khalsa, who entered his 52nd day of hunger strike, had lost more than 20 kilograms. Doctors have expressed fears for his life. But the farmeractivist refused to get hospitalised even as his health deteriorated considerably over the last two days.

While Khalsa was not in the position to talk due to weakness, his 25-year-old son Jujhar Singh told Mirror that his fight will continue till the government agrees to release the prisoners.

We have full respect for All Takhat Sahib but not Jathedars who have sold their souls for short term gains and are proven to be spineless!

These lines are apt for the Akauti Jathedars, puppets of Panjab Sarkar.

He gives his word, but then backs out. All that he says is false.
The false person is hollow within; he is totally engrossed in falsehood.
He tries to take vengeance upon the Lord, who bears no vengeance; such a person is trapped by falsehood and greed.
The True King, the Primal Lord God, kills him when He sees what he has done.
The Messenger of Death sees him, and he rots away in pain.
Even-handed justice is administered, O Nanak, in the Court of the True Lord. ||15||
