Should Sikhs be armed with modern weapons?

Agreed, but only a fool goes unarmed against a knife. Only a handful will ever engage a knife attacker regardless if they have a weapon or not. Only a handful, those with prior gyaan on fighting.

Have you ever witnessed a random stabbing? 95% of the time It's pure aggression , pure dominance pure thoughts of destruction of the victim. It's rapid attacks slashing trying to get to the organs etc. It is very hard to disarm when the attackers intention is pure destruction ad they will charge in trying to knife slash and cut you. Very hard. The reality of a knife attack is not how you see on the tv or the movies and the ability to disarm, it's a lot harder than that. Getting cut is always going happen, hell, you cAn even get your veins all cut up in the moment.

I've seen it a couple of times. I know what you mean. You're talking to the wrong guy here. I grew up in the wrong place at the wrong time.  

But I did have a close friend (now RIP) who was attacked by multiple f**kers, who disarmed them and f**ked them up (intensive care unit). They never got to him. But he was natural fighter from young and abnormally strong. Some people are like that.

As to your first question a sharp kirpan is absolutely effective in this day and age. Among other things, it doesn't require batteries, recharges (mace/pepper spray), licenses, bullets, etc. Do you remember the Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting by a white supremacist in which 6 people died? It was reported that the Gurdwara president held off the attacker "with a butter knife". That was a bit strange, since butter knives are not even sharp! I imagine that what was being referred to was a small kirpan. I have no idea whether it was sharp or not, because this wasn't followed up in the reporting, but regardless, it seems that a kirpan did hold up the attacker, thereby allowing more people to get to safety. So, yes, a kirpan was effective in this day and age.

And I'm sure you're not unaware of all the knife stabbings going on (by non-Sikhs). If their knives are effective, why wouldn't ours be, even if we term them a "kirpan"?

Well we already are "required" to do so, but it depends on what you mean by required. There's a minimal set of requirements set out in the Sikh Rehit Maryada, whether by the SGPC or others. But then there's also additional updesh by Guru Sahib.

So, we're "required" to do sehaj path every day. But many/most just get by with doing Nitnem, some not even that. We're "required" to get up 1 pehar (3 hours) before dawn, but some just get by with waking up with enough time to do Nitnem. We're "required" to get Gurmat education, including santhia and keertan, but not everyone does. We're "required" to do Naam Simran, but many just get by with Nitnem. And we're "required" to be well-armed, but most just get by with a small Kirpan, blunt at that.

As for carrying a gun, that would be based on your own individual threat level or desire (it's huge bother and responsibility to carry a firearm). You can, however, secure it in your home.
