What is reality?

Recommended Posts

I had these type of philosophical questions 3 years ago, but I am just curious and for some reason, I am still thinking about these questions. People often say we are living in Maya an Illusion, while in Sikhism we do believe in this Maya, but we don't actually believe that the Universe is fake, but created in God, but the only truth is in Whaeguru; however, there are Maya that trap us from reaching Whaeguru such as greed, lust, ego, etc, but I was wondering what does Sikhism view reality as?

I'm not sure, but real or not, you only see it in your mind. If there is an external world, we never really see it, what we perceive is in our consciousness.

Where does all consciousness come from?

When we think we are a body, seperate from the whole, it appears that way. Attaching to things we think we need. If the ego is the sense of separation, it seems that is what keeps us from seeing it from a place of unification. Seeing it all as Akal Puarkh's consciousness.

Well, it's an illusion in that if we had "those eyes" (dib drishti) we could see it's not actually Maya, but rather God.

But you can't know the nature of reality merely through discourse.

Rather, you have to do simran (meditation). That's how you can become one with God, and therefore know God, and therefore know reality.

God is mixed in with maya, like sugar mixed in with sand:

ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਖਾਂਡੁ ਰੇਤੁ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਖਰੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਚੁਨੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Har Hai Khaandd Raeth Mehi Bikharee Haathhee Chunee N Jaae ||

The Lord is like sugar, scattered in the sand; the elephant cannot pick it up.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਲੀ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਕੀਟੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੩੮॥

Kehi Kabeer Gur Bhalee Bujhaaee Keettee Hoe Kai Khaae ||238||

Says Kabeer, the Guru has given me this sublime understanding: become an ant, and feed on it. ||238||

Salok Bhagat Kabir

You can't obtain the sugar by being big like an elephant (i.e., acting like a body). You have to be fine, small, sublime (like a soul). Then can you find God mixed in with the material world (Maya).

What is reality?

Reality is Truth only.

That Truth, which is forever, eternal, changeless, permanent, everlasting, beyond the parameters of time and space.

That Truth, which exists as such, in spite of Parlay(dissolution) and Maha Parlay(grand dissolution).

To that Truth, Guru Sahiban called it  Sat-Nam. Where Sat = Truth, which means, that Truth is Nam.

And to that Truth/Reality, Gurbani describes as Aad Sach, Jugaad Sach, Hae Bhee Sach, Nanak hosee bhee Sach.

At other place, Guru Sahiban tells us:  Ekas bin, sabh dandh hae, sabh mithiya moh maya.

Apart from that one reality of Sat Nam, everything else, is false, perishable, duality or Maya.

Sat Sree Akal.
