  1. Maybe we've made that into our permanent excuse. Time to be self-critical here, all the awareness we create is purely insular, it's effectively aimed solely at the Sikhs. To narrow it down further, it's aimed mainly at the more righteous minded panthic Sikhs not even the mainstream Anglo-Punjabi/Sikh community. We are pulling out the same creased up banners, the same slogans, the same speeches from the last 20 plus years. Many of the same old faces still putting themselves forward with little to add since the same speech they probably did in year 1984 itself. The large 84 rally turnout is purely based on loyalty, emotions and commitment of the Sangat. It's a shame we are not using these large numbers of sangat to really create the impact we deserve. Time to get out of our comfort zones and interact with the non Sikh world. Last week, when I contacted Amnesty, HRW as well as some other community groups who share a similar cause such as the Tamil forum not of the one of the reps I spoke to were aware of our rally. The funders of the rally such as FSO need to really move away from the same old formula, worrying about pleasing the same old Sikh personalities with stage time and give way to new innovative ideas to work towards marketing a powerful message. As ever, it's all about letting go of some of that power.

  2. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Sangatji please take the time to post stories/katha about jaaping Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji so that we can gain inspiration to accomplish the One Million Jaaps. Ill begin. *Veer Pjs please can you make this a sticky and post some translated katha on Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji* The Making Of A Brahmgyani Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh In Guru Jis darbar Bhai Surinder Singh Ji (a kirtani from Baba Bakala who was well known at one time (before the advent of tape recorders in Punjab)) narrated the following story to the sangat when he was asked about the importance of naam japna. One time Bhai Sahib and his Jatha were travelling around Uttar Pradesh and had reached Lucknow the states capital. On the Prakash Diwas Gurpurab of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the Gurudwaras committee had arranged a one week kirtan programme and had requested that Bhai Sahib and his Jatha partake in this mahaan seva. In this way Bhai Sahib and his Jatha sang the praises of Akaal Purakh for one week at the Gurudwara Sahib in Lucknow. After the ardas on the final day of the programme Bhai Sahib was approached by an elderly hindu lady called Mata Dhian Dev who had accompanied a Sikh family to the programme. Mata Ji told Bhai Sahib that she had never heard such beautiful bhajans before and that she had been deeply moved by the love and peace of the house of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. With tears in her eyes she requested Bhai Sahib and the sangat to come and hold a kirtan programme at her house. Although Bhai Sahib and his jatha were meant to leave for Punjab later that night Bhai Sahib being a beloved of Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji acceded to her request immediately and said that they would come to her house. The next day Bhai Sahib and the Sangat from the Gurudwara Sahib arrived at Matajis house. Mataji with the help of her relatives had cleared all the furniture from her house and had put white sheets everywhere in preparation for their arrival. For six hours Bhai Sahib and the Sangat sang the praises of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. At the end of the kirtan as Bhai Sahib was about to leave Mata Dhian Dev quickly got up, took hold of his hand and said, Gyaniji please give me a mantar from this path of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Bhai Sahib smiled and told Mata Dhian Dev that he could not give her such a mantar as only the Panj Pyarai could do that. Mata Dhain Dev listened to this and then said, You have sung so many bhajans here and at the Gurudwara Sahib please give me any mantar from one of these bhajans. Bhai Sahib once again explained that the mantar Mata Dhian Dev was seeking could only be obtained from the Panj Pyarai. He then began to explain in detail the life of a Gursikh and the Amrit Sanchar but Mataji kept asking him to provide her with a mantar. Finally Bhai Sahib told her to repeat Guru Sahibs mool mantar from Ikonkaar to Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach as many times as she could. Mataji got up and went to her room and came back holding a mala in her hand. While showing Bhai Sahib her mala she told him that every day she uses it to repeat the name of Shiva and asked if she could use this mala to repeat the mantar he had given her. Bhai Sahib smiled and said yes. Mataji then asked Bhai Sahib how many times she should repeat the mantar. Bhai Sahib said that she should repeat the mool mantar as many times as she could. A few years after this Bhai Sahib and his jatha visited Lucknow once again to peform kirtan seva. After the programme Bhai Sahib saw the same secretary who was there the last time they had visited the Gurudwara Sahib. Bhai Sahib talked to the secretary for a while and then asked him about the wellbeing of Mataji. When Bhai Sahib did this the secretary didnt say anything for some time. After a while Bhai Sahib asked if she had passed away. The secretary looked at Bhai Surinder Singh Ji and said, No Gyaniji, Mataji has not passed away but has become a Brahmgyani. Bhai Sahib was taken aback by this and decided to go and visit Matajis house. When he reached her house the front door opened and he was greeted by a beautiful Khalsa decorated in Guru Jis dastar and bana who with folded hands loudly uttered, Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. The beautiful khalsa adorned with Gurujis pure dastar, bana and shahstars was none other than Mata Dhian Dev who had now become Mata Dhian Kaur a beloved daughter of Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Bhai Surrinder Singh Ji eyes began to well up in tears. He was soon caught in Mata Dhian Kaur Jis loving embrace. After taking a few moments to compose himself Bhai Surrinder Singh Ji immediately sat Mataji down who with both hands did a benti for Bhai Sahib to do Kirtan. Bhai Surrinder Singh Ji smiled and said that of course he would do Kirtan but before that he wanted to hear how a few years ago he had left a Hindu mother only to find a beautiful Khalsa mother in her place. Mataji nodded her head and then began to speak, Do you remember all those years ago when I asked you to give me a mantar of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj? You immediately told me to go and see the Panj Pyarai to be blessed with Naam. I quickly dismissed this and after much insistence you agreed to write out the Sri Mool Mantar Sahib of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj for me. The day you left I sat down and began to recite Sri Mool Mantar Sahib from Ikonkaar to Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach using my mala. I used to sit down everyday like this and became lost in this practise. Eventually minutes became hours and hours became days. I used to take my mala everywhere with me. Slowly even my mala disappeared until the only thing I could hear, see, feel or think about was Gurujis Sri Mool Mantar Sahib. Wherever I looked I began to see Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jis Sri Mool Mantar Sahib. It was everywhere and within everything from the floor to the walls, trees, birds, skies and beyond. One day while reciting Sri Mool Mantar Sahib I felt my conscious pulled inwards and was met by four people whose faces were covered. They were dressed in dark clothes and were carrying a throne that was held in place with two long sticks. They told me to climb on to the throne and said that they would carry me to wherever I wanted to go. I quickly got onto that throne. They took me to many places each which was more beautiful than the next and asked me if I liked any of them. I was told not only to look at each place but also to get of the throne and wander around those places. After wandering around for a while I would come back to them and say is there nothing else? Is there no land where only Gurujis Sri Mool Manatar Sahib resounds? Eventually I was taken to a place that I cannot describe. Outside of this place resided all the devis, devtas and other beings. They were all waiting outside hoping to gain entry to this place. Some were sweeping others were performing other types of seva… I dont know what happened then but the next thing I knew I was inside this very place. I found myself sat in satsang surrounding by men and women with moon-like faces that were dressed in blue and kesri and decked with sarabloh weapons. In front of all these people sat the most beautiful person I have ever seen. The only way I can describe his beauty is that he was the Sri Mool Mantar Sahib itself After sitting here for a while I was approached by a tall person who had a long flowing beard, was dressed in blue and carried a long stick. This person asked me what are you doing here? I looked at him and said what do you mean? I have recited the Sri Mool Mantar Sahib of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj I have every right to be here. I dont know what happened next but I found myself in front of Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji himself who said that I had to leave this place. I began to cry and eventually Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji told me that he would give me another chance and that I would have a certain time to ensure that I secure my place in his court. I dropped towards the floor and placed my head at his charankamal. When I raised my head I found that my face was covered with a white sheet and that people around me were uttering, Ram Nam Satya Hai (the name of Rama is True). I immediately got up and began to tell people around me that I wasnt dead but very much alive. They were all in shock. I immediately ran towards the Gurudwara Sahib and asked the Granthi Singh over there to arrange an Amrit Sanchar for me. He told me that in due course one would be arranged but when I narrated my story to him with Guru Sahibs blessings the Amrit Sanchar was arranged for that day itself. Only Guru Sahib and Mata Dhian Kaur knew how much time that he had given her. However how much it was she left this earthly vessel while reciting Sri Mool Mantar Sahib in the house of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Singh sajo Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh   How An Abused Muslim Boy Became The President Of Pakistan Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh One time Sardar Meherban Singh Ji went to see Muhammad Ayub Khan (the president of Pakistan) at his house. After talking for a while Bhai Sahib noticed a plaque on the wall in which he saw Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji written in Gurmukhi and Urdu. Bhai Sahib looked at Ayub Khan and said, Why have you got the Sri Mool Mantar Sahib Ji of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on your wall? Ayub Khan smiled and said, Sardarji this Kalaam of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj has made me what I am today. ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh || One Universal Creator God. O Nanak, Forever And Ever True. ||1|| Ayub Khan said, I was beaten everyday by the Mulla in charge of the Madrasa. One day I had had enough and after being beaten very badly decided to run away from the Madrasa. I ran as far as I could. I finally stopped (at the only place in this world that is open to every single creature) the house of Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. I sat outside on the steps of the Gurudwara Sahib and began to sob. As I was doing this I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and saw the beautiful face of a Naam Abiyhaasi Gursikh. The Gursikh looked at me and said, Yuba why are you crying today? I wiped the tears from my face and said, Babaji I cant take this anymore! Everyday I go to the Madrasa just to be beaten by the Mulla. My heart, mind and body is broken. I dont know what to do! The Gursikh smiled at me and said, Yuba I will give you the Mool Mantar of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Whenever you have any difficulties in life repeat this Mool Manatar of Guruji. I looked at the Gursikh as he wrote the Mool Manatar in urdu and proceeded to teach it to me. After repeating the Mool Mantar together for a few minutes the Gursikh told me to go back to the Madrasa. With hope in my heart I went back to the Madrasa. As I was doing this I realised that I was late and that the Mulla would be very annoyed but I still repeated this kalaam of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. When the Mulla saw me he looked at me and said, Oh, so youve come. Quickly sit down we have a lot to get through. I was so surprised that he didnt tell me to stand in one spot, or grab me by my ears, slap me or use the long stick he used to keep to beat me with! This was the first time in my life that I had not been beaten by the Mulla. From this moment I realised the power of this kalaam of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and quickly committed it to memory. Anytime I had any difficulties in life I repeat it. In this way I came to be the President of Pakistan. Having felt its power I tell my children to keep hold of this kalaam. Akho Satnaaam Sri Waheguru. This story is recorded in Ayub Khans autobiography. The Gursikh who narrated this story to the sangat says that he has this story pasted on his wall so that everyday when he wakes up and looks at it it gives him a slap across his face. While writing this I feel that same slap. May Guru Sahib bless us with the ability to repeat his Sri Mool Mantar Sahib. ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh || One Universal Creator God. 3. Once again the 1984 June Rally appears to gathered minimal interest from the mainstream media. Last weeks Tamil protest against the Sri Lankan President being invited for the jubilee celebrations (Wednesday 6 June 2012) raised large media attention. The Tamil forum in the UK seem to have some stronger machinery in raising national awareness than we have as a more established community in the UK have. It's really time for us to re-engineer our approach to raising awareness of atrocities against Sikhs in India. Our approach is repetitive and insular solely aimed at Sikh media, maybe it's become our comfort zone...

  4. Lol, Namdharis, Nirmalai, Bhai Randhir Singh and many others have at some point all had a finger pointed at them from various parties for being British conspirators. Facts say otherwise. Baba Ram Singh Namdhari and the early Kookai, were the most vehement outspoken opposition of British Rule, it's common historical knowledge. What happened to the movement after Baba Ji died is another story... (not relevant here). The British removed Baba Ji from India altogether (sent to Rangoon jail) because they found his ideology and threat so dangerous toward their rule, and because he was bringing thousands ofwntrodden people of Punjab into the Khalsa fold once again. Giani Gian Singh Ji, writer of his famous book Panth Parkash , was the eyewitness of the martyrdom of the Namdhari Sikhs at Malerkotla. He has described this in his opus as under: Painting by Vassili Verestchagin showing the British execution of Namdharis by blowing them up with cannons in Malerkotla (Image source: http://haryanawatch.blogspot.com/2010/03/14-july-2009-photo-source-httpsirsanews.html) The account of those Sikhs (the Bandais) has been set out in a number of books. But, now, I would speak to you, in truthful details of what I saw with my own eyes. During Nineteen Twenty-eight Bikrami I came into contact with the Kukas. The butchers who had slaughtered cows were themselves slain by these lion-hearted men of the Guru. Nearly sixty of them, pure souls, were arrested and were brought to Malerkotla in custody. The English (Government) issued orders that they be blown off by cannon. They were delighted to hear of this order they were indeed overwhelmed with joy. Their exuberance shot into their miens They recited aloud the word of the Guru. As moths rushing towards a lamp, unrestrained they made for the cannon. Their spirits in high transport, they hurried forward without a thought for their dear lives. This I saw with my own eyes, People had gathered in large number. They saw and were filled with wonder. Wedded to the Supreme life-style of the Sikhs, They were not afraid of embracing death by arms. They could meet the enemy on the battle-field and be restrained from neither laying down nor taking life . -Panth Prakash, 1 st edition

  6. Could the lack of media coverage/attention be a result of the fact that India is a tiger economy? Britain/USA are now bedfellows with India? Britain is dependent on India in terms of trade etc? I feel that a protest against middle eastern countries by Uk based dissidents would have definitely attracted more coverage. We live in a money driven world. The only way we Sikhs will attract sympathy is if we become affluent enough to have an impact on the western economy. Human rights don't seem to matter unless atrocities are committed against the dissidents of a country that the west wants to destroy.

  7. 11th June 1982: Exactly 30 years ago Phase of false-encounters, illegal-abductions & detentions, custodial torture, enforced disappearances, arbitrary executions, secret & false stories of escapes from police custody, blatant use of laws like TADA, rape, murder starts in Panjab. After more than three decades (1978-2012), millions of sacrifices, attack on most holiest & sacred Darbar Sahib-Akaal Takht Sahib and other 124 Gurughars, Sikkh Genocide (1984), then facing these fake-encounters and the latest shahidi of Bhai Jaspal SInghji (March 2012) we are still at crossroads !

  10. Satnaam These bits really stood out in your post. I have been slandered by many when going through stages of bhagti.. Looking back, I was heartbroken at the things people did and said(Gurbani says never break another's heart). I used to pick up peoples pain(This happens to bhagats at a point) and wonder how people could be so cruel, that I was absorbing their hurt and pain and they were hitting me when I was down- giving me more pain to add on to it. Then I realised that it was all Hukam- it was all God's plan- it made me a stronger bhagat- I realised for myself that the slander was a Huge blessing- It broke down my ego- made me realise I couldn't do anything on my own and that He is the only doer. It taught me to be the lowest of the low- and it was Him who was teaching me in the costume of my slanderers. It taught me to open my heart and see Him in every form, in every costume and scenario He appeared to me in. Love Him in your slanders, your tormentors, love Him in the devil(and remember that even the most evil demons live in pain, as deserved), in the angel, in heaven and hell(positive and negative karams). True acceptance of Him and His will is True Love. This life is a khel- a test world to discover Truth. We may learn not to upset people, to watch ourselves and our actions, but if others choose not to- that is just hukam. We can teach them, but even if they don't listen, we must truly accept that they are at their own stage of discovery as He wills it We must not judge them, for they are unrealised God's- walking, speaking, slandering at His command. We must understand it is not yet their time to discover the Truth. This is respecting and accepting God's Will- this is True Love. God bless you Kiv sacẖi▫ārā ho▫ī▫ai kiv kūrhai ṯutai pāl. So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away? Hukam rajā▫ī cẖalṇā Nānak likẖi▫ā nāl. ||1|| O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. Hukmī hovan ākār hukam na kahi▫ā jā▫ī. By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described. Hukmī hovan jī▫a hukam milai vadi▫ā▫ī. By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained. Hukmī uṯam nīcẖ hukam likẖ ḏukẖ sukẖ pā▫ī▫ah. By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained. Iknā hukmī bakẖsīs ik hukmī saḏā bẖavā▫ī▫ah. Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever. Hukmai anḏar sabẖ ko bāhar hukam na ko▫e. Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command. Nānak hukmai je bujẖai ṯa ha▫umai kahai na ko▫e. ||2|| O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. ||2||

  11. I can see where you're coming from CSN, however I think i'm still of the optimistic (perhaps overly so in other people's opinions) that something could change. For example you spoke of a woman with MND and although she did die in hospital I still think to myself what if others like her could be helped in the future i.e. new technologies etc, however due to their current beliefs that death is better opt for euthanasia hence don't experience what might have been. Also I think there are too many crooks in this world and the legalisation of euthanasia would definitely lead to some exploiting this for their own gain. Overall, as with everything...each to their own, their life, their decision. Food for thought, eh.

  13. Ha, ha, I've heard that as well. My mother has been encouraged (for the past number of years) by Sikh midddle-aged women at her work to buy wine for Christmas because, in their words, "It's just grape juice and seeing as you and your son don't drink there's no problem". Mata Ji obviously told them to jog-on but it makes me lol.
