Both r as bad as the other, whether ur drinkin or smokin there aint no excuses like medicinal reasons...dats jus lame.  Reason drinkin is seen as ok is cuz so many people do it, and hav dun even from back in india/africa or whereva ur parents n dat cum from. 10 yrs or so from 2day smokin will probably b seen as cool jus like alcohol is today. studpid really but dats da way it is....well dats wat i think.

i wudnt even say 10years!! more like 5!!!!

I used to drink but not smoke, i drank coz it seemed the norm in the community!! i hadnt had much of a Gursikh crowd until i went to uni so as i was with goray and went to so many weding parties, all is aw was alcohol!!

They are both as bad as each other, its probably got something to do with the fact drinking is more like a daily thing, you jst pour it like a normal glass of juice or something but smoking takes an effort! Smoking also makes the clothes stink!!! When people smoke they are prone to getting caught!! where as smoking means they jst gota act normal and eat loads chewing gum!!

both as bad as eachother, best advice is stop before yuo really mash up your bodies! failing that! think how much money you waste on em in a year!! then look at what you have to show for it!!!!!!! - when you start workin and listen to people moan about how skint they are and how they cnt go down the pub (i work with goray...) you stop and think, if you cut out the fags and the alcohol!! you will have loads more cash! and beable to get a nice car, house etc!

Hey! That is so true! I remember not so long ago when I was a muna, drunk loadsa booze and other stuff blush.gif plus clubs, hair cuts, eating McDs, Pizzahut and KFC. I was always skint. Now, its been a few good years that I have quited the mentioned things - I am Minted. Got a new car VW last Friday :TH:. All due to Vahegurooos Kirpa pray.gif

Now all hear as Bhai Sahib mentioned gorai saying I am skint, in debt, blah de blah blah and I think if they only take that first step towards Guru Sahib  .

Drinking alcohol is very much glorified in the Punjabi culture- whereas, cigarettes are deemed as being "bad". grin.gif I don't think there is a difference between alcohol and cigarettes, as both do realtively the same amount of damage to the body physiologically, emotionally, and psychologically., as well as put other people's lives at risk. I read somewehre that alcohol is a drug that does the MOST damage to the body than other drugs, yet it is legalized  @ . Alcohol in the punjabi culture is unfortunately being promoted- the ignorant mentality is that people will only come to gatherings where alcohol is served.

They want to become Sikhs soon as well so they are trying to use this opportunity to portatry a good messga eto people before they do

Do you think this would be accepted by Sikhs tho as sikhs hate bhangra

If i remember Correctly, Guru Gobind Singh jee's Horse Neela stopped on the edge of a tobacoo crop. He wouldnt go near the plants. When people asked Guru ji why they had stopped then Guru ji replied "This horse knows Tobacoo kills many generations, therefore no sikh would ever touch or consume tobacoo".

So wat i understand from that sakhi is that Guru ji told all his sikhs that Tobacoo is never tobe consumed as smoking not only harms the smoker but the people around him ("second hand smoking").

Also When Guru ji said Tobacoo kills many Generations, consider a pregnent woman, if she inhales smoke from a cigerrete then her child will have bad effect to hence tobacoo effecting many generations.

Alcohol on the other hand, effects the person who is consuming it.

They are both bad...

another interesting take is that jatts in punjab view cigarettes as a habit of the labor workers from bihar, "bhaiyaas" while drinking is considered a jatt thing. Jatts sing about how they make desi daru at home, kar di kadioh sharaab" etc...

plus punjbai songs like to make analogies between women and shraab, like your eyes are like shraab, or tu botal shraab wargi, no one would compare a girl to a cigarette, teriah akhan cirgett wargiah, just doesn't work....

Khalsa ji

I think we are so fortunate to have a pita like Guru Gobind Singh Ji. We should do his shukkrana every morning that He has saved us from tobacco and alcohol (…………and meat , Randip Ji ???)

You see people smashed out of their minds and making complete **** of them selves in the streets and it is so sad to see. You see relatives quibble over a glassi and become so so lalchi over a bit of alcohol left in the bottle, it is so sad. You read all the bad effects of smoking and all the money wasted, and you feel like putting your head at the charan of Guru Granth Sahib Ji in eternal thanks for saving us from the ways og kalyug.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
