Using Sikh Sangat Site During Work Hours

I just wanted the sangat's opinion on something which might seem trivial but has been on mind for a while now. We all know that the first of Guru Nanak Dev Jee's 3 asool (golden rules) is 'Kirat Karo' - ie honest work for a living. And I have heard katha at the Gurdwara from Bhai's who explain that those who earn a dishonest living can not advance spiritually.

So my question: for those sangat members that work in an office (or other work environment) where there is access to PC's and the internet whilst working, and actually access and participate in the Sikh Sangat site during work time...... Is this wrong? Would this be considered a dishonest earning?

I would be interested to find out the sangat views on this and if anyone else can relate to the above.

I've always thought that dishonest work is stuff like making a living from gambling, extortion, blackmail etc - stuff where you haven't actually done any work to earn money, as well as illegal work such as growing illegal drugs etc.

However, surfing the net when you're meant to be working is wrong as it is deceitful.

Thankfully I'm a student at uni so I don't have to worry about these things....now where's my mate with the lecture notes :lol:

I came across the following definition of Kirat Karo ...

Kirat Karni is one of three primary pillars of Sikhism. The other two pillars are Naam Japo and Wand kay Shako.

To work and earn by the sweat of the brow, to live a family way of life, and practice truthfulness and honesty in all dealings.

Both of the above terms mean to carry out good deeds and earn a honest, pure and honest livelihood by exercising ones God given skills, abilities, talents and hard labour for the benefit and improvement of the individual, their family and society at large. This means to work with determination and focus by the sweat of your brows and not to be lazy and to waste your life. To do these things without 'personal gain' becoming your main motivation. Make Simran and dedication of the work to God your main motivation.

Depends...if you are putting off work you should be doing to browse the Internet, then it is not correct, as you should be working. However, if you have work like mine and there is no work pending (for like 2 minutes), it is free time...might as well use it to your advantage. In such a situation, might as well make good use of your time.

Without a doubt it's dishonest if one is being paid by an employer for surfing. Most employers, especially larger ones have legal right (jurisdiction specific) and access to logs of employee computer use. Sadly, many employers are dishonest, employees in turn are dishonest, and employers will actually tolerate and expect some dishonesty. Sikhs should rise above this.

Also note that those who have access to PCs often are not punching clocks. They may be their own bosses, be paid for work product, or project completion, or have specific targets to meet, beyond which they have discretion.

I occasionaly log on to SS during work, if theres a informative topic im learning about Sikhi so how can that be wrong?

If i was going onto different sites to do with music or clubs n all that then i suppose itll be wrong but i think going onto SS is keeping Sikhi in your mind during working hours which personally i dont see no wrong in.

I maybe making up excuses for my own actions, im not sure but oh well :nihungsmile:

If you use a computer as part of your job then you are allowed 15 minute breaks after every 3 hours ish i believe. So browsing the internet every now and then or sikhsangat is not dis honest as long as your work doesnt suffer.

I am one of the guilty ones, who passeses time at work by sufing the net (includign sikh sangat) I also use works printers to print out personnel stuff etc

I also email sangat during work time (((((((

ahhhhhhhhhhhh- i never thought of it as dishonest (((((
