As Muslim leaders trooped in and out of the Department for Communities and Local Government, one sentiment became abundantly clear.

A year on from the July 7 bombings - and days after a massive alleged plot to bring down airliners was foiled - the time for talking was over.

...........................................................

Extremism taskforces

The key project to come out of the London bombings was the so-called Preventing Extremism Taskforce. A host of community figures gathered in Windsor at the request of the Home Office and came up with 64 recommendations.

The first thing that we need to do as a community is admit there is a problem - It is like being an alcoholic - we need to stand up and say these things and have an open and honest debate

Haras Rafiq, Sufi Muslim Council

These proposals included a scholars roadshow, more work on integration and empowering women and a public inquiry into the bombings.

The proposed road show of leading modern Islamic thinkers has been well received but some see it as only preaching to the converted.

Many Muslims who were involved in the taskforce now believe that unless something is done quickly it will go down in history as a tokenistic exercise. Some of the women involved (and some of those who were not invited) have felt particularly let down.

Top of the shopping list is support for the recently-established Mosques and Imams Advisory Body, a kind of community-run watchdog which aims to turn 1,500 places of prayer into genuine centres of community leadership and support.

This was a key recommendation from the taskforce but its birth was long and difficult.

The British Muslim Forum, a group backed by 300 mosques mostly in the Midlands and North, has run a number of trial youth workshops on radicalisation and politics. It wants the government to support this kind of grassroots work, said its chairman Khurshid Ahmed.

"I think the government is beginning to give us the tools," said Mr Ahmed.

........................................

Some leaders also want the government to help to create a network of imams in British universities that mirrors the Christian chaplaincy service - professional, paid preachers whose livelihood depends on them doing a good job.

"The communities have a responsibility [to combat extremism] but the tools, mechanisms and drivers need to come from government," said Dr Abbas.

Then there is this article

Muslim leaders summoned to talks with the Government on tackling extremism in their midst called for public holidays to mark their religious festivals.

But, in what she admitted were 'sharp' exchanges, some senior Muslim figures turned the tables yesterday and made a series of demands which also included the introduction of Sharia law for family matters.

Dr Syed Aziz Pasha, secretary general of the Union of Muslim Organisations of the UK and Ireland, said: 'We told her if you give us religious rights, we will be in a better position to convince young people that they are being treated equally along with other citizens.'

Sharia law, which is practised in large parts of the Middle East, should also be introduced in Britain, they argued. While it specifies stonings and amputations as routine punishments for crimes, Dr Pasha said he wanted it only for family affairs.

Call me racist but i feel that the above response by muslim leaders is just trying to take advantage of the situation to further their cause. If all of the above demands are met by the government then There will be

Modernisation of mosques in uk at the expense of All Tax Payers

Imams would also be paid colleges and universities for thier role in education

Government will provide funding for scholars roadshow / Preach islam to non muslims

Muslims will be able to divorce their wives by saying "Talak Talak Talak" Talak =divorce , three times.

What do the rest of you guys think about the responses of muslim leaders whenever there is a terrorist attack? Nearly all the mention in the press is about muslims, sikhs who actually suffer the consequences dont get any air time unless a hate crime happens.

I am sick and tired of muslim leaders making demands whenever something is done by extremists. Rather than making demands from the government they should just hand over the extremists, as we all know from having a close nit community, people tend to know who is an extremist and who isnt.

GuruFateh!

I'll probably get moaned at for my opinion but here goes. In the times of the Mughals, the followers of Islam did unspeakable acts of a barbaric nature. In my opinion nothing much has changed 300-500 years down the road. There are many muslims in the world today that are committing similar acts.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
