Cremation Or Burial

Should a sikh be cremated or Buried after death or does it really matter...

please support ur answers or thoughts with references from SGGS ji..

The main reason that people bury their bodies is that semitic religions- islaam, christianity, judiasm, believe that these bodies will rise again on the day of judgement.

First Mehla:

The clay of the Muslim's grave becomes clay for the potter's wheel.

So in essence the body has no use after the person is dead which is why, as Sikhs, we burn our bodies.

Nowhere in the Sikh religion does it say we're to be cremated only. As the hindus do! It's a personal prefrence, otherwise Guru ji would have said to the muslim/hindu followers to only cremate or bury his shroud!

Just want to clarify what veerji said..

We don't cremate using rituals like Hindus do. We just dispose of bodies int he most hygeinic/quickest way.. since the soul has left the body and the body is only a piece of dust..

Should be cremated but if that is not possible it can be jul parvah (sent away in river) or buried.

If you do in fact have a choice, cremation seems to be the only ideal and rational choice as it saves land and speeds up degradation. Ultimately both methods result an identical outcome - degradation of the human body to organic compounds. Why take the slow route and unnecessarily waste productive land?
