Why I Think I Should Cut Hair

I live in the US, I'm 18 and really confused with religion for the past couple of months. I don't have anyone to look up to in my family as someone who I want to be like. I've been thinking about it day & night, done research and still doing it.

Everything I'm going to say will sound like an excuse to a gur sikh, and will sound reasonable to everyone else.

I don't think I'm a sikh, besides that I have a turban. People stare at me, I dont care, people make comments, I dont care, people laugh and point, I really could care less. Its not a big deal, unless if I make it big. It feels like I'm the only sikh in town sometimes, even in the gurudawa, theres is usually a mona behind the guru granth sahib.

My brother is 27, he's my image. It seems like everything I do, he does the same. Same attitude, same actions, same thinking, which really irrates me since it is something you wouldn't respect. Hes a sardar, a weird one. Prays whenever he likes to, the other day he started yelling out the japji sahib at 1am before sleeping in the praying room, which really annoyed the )#% outta me. The next day I found porn in his computer, haha. He's always on the computer. One day he prays, the next day he doesnt, its hard to understand him. He has desires of doing things a sikh can't really do, such as partying and hanging out and tries to avoid it since he knows it would be hard to fit in, and stays away from outdoor activities.

My main point is, I can't keep up with my image like this anymore. Being a sardar isnt me. I respect everyone who keeps it, but I dont see any point in doing so. Things weren't the same as they were 300 years back, and if guru nanak was here today, he would probably ask all the sikhs why they are in america commiting sins and so on.

If the religion is really for me, and if I commit a mistake by cutting my hair, then hopefully waheguru will do kirpa and turn me back into a sikh.

I won't be taking any actions yet, I will be attending the Sikh Surat in NYC first, and after that the decision is in my hands. Main reason why I'm taking my time is, I have already spoken to my parents and they have given me the green light. Before that, I was in depression and extremly confused, as my brother had told me that if I cut my hair, I wouldn't be known as my fathers son anymore, I would be looked at, people would make more fun of me and so on.

Then later on I spoke with my dad, my dad told me that I'm old enough to make my decision, and whatever decision I chose to follow, if it makes me happy- it will be the right decision.

So after talking to my dad, a great load of burden got off my head, and now I'm just taking my time to look into the religion as much as I can.

I'd appreciate if people would comment on this and let me know their views.

:D @ @ @ :umm: @ :D @ @ @ @ @ :@ @ :@ @ :@ @ :@ @ :@ @

The easy path is never the right path, that's for starters. Most people who cut their hair have no knowledge of Sikhi therefore they have no appreciation for it. It starts with parents who have to teach why Sikhi is important then YOU HAVE to have Sangat. Without Sangat the Sikhi seed inside us won't grow. It grows with Guru's blessing, but you have to go and get his blessing, which comes from doing Sangat on a consistent basis. If you have kept your hair all these years and you make snap decision about if you should continue keeping your hair it seems a bit extreme. It all depends how strong of a person you are on the inside, everyone gets negative thoughts from time to time, that is the influence of Kalyug, but we have to fight it.

My advice to you is that let any notions that you may have in your head for cutting your hair, simply ignore. No matter how much this idea comes in your head, simply ignore it. See what happens, you will be surprised. Do Ardaas to Guru Sahib that he save you and your hair, leave your thoughts to him.

Start attending Sangat, it can work wonders, heres a start, Sangat meetings in NYC:

P.S. Whenever I get negative thoughts I watch this clip at a high volume, it helps :D )

One who turns away from the Guru, and becomes baymukh - without the True Guru, he shall not find liberation.

He shall not find liberation anywhere else either; go and ask the wise ones about this.

He shall wander through countless incarnations; without the True Guru, he shall not find liberation.

But liberation is attained, when one is attached to the feet of the True Guru, chanting the Word of the Shabad.

Says Nanak, contemplate this and see, that without the True Guru, there is no liberation. ||22||

Life is tough we all have our ups and lows, but we have to see it as a test from mahraj, do ardas and try to get through it. I know, i know it is alot easier said than done. But mahraj is your father, he will help you. You are going through some tough times, and your faith is probably at a low point, but how is cutting ur kes the answer to this? How would it make you feel, what will you get from it. I really think you need sangat, find some snagat in your local area, get together talk about sikhi, try and read some posts from here, on what inspired others to get into sikhi. Im sure there are plenty of gursikhs who will show you lots of piaar.

If everyone just gave up when the goings got tough, we wouldnt have many gursikhs here today!!

Paaji start today, with just a few mool mantars, go onto www.sikhitothemax.com and read some of the random shabads. Download and listen to as much kirtan as you can , and do a hearfelt ardas and im sure mahraj will bless you with kirpa. You are only here to japp naam!! dont get attached to anything else, just concentrate on your relationship with mahraj!

After reading the first sentence, I didn't care to read the rest as what you were about to say sounded like opinion. People say you will regret it, people say you will hate yourself this and that. Tell me something, why did the Sikhs move to the US in the first place? For some love and money right?

I have read many articles on the gurus, the happenings, the miracles, peoples opinions from mona's to gur sikhs. And honestly, I don't belive that Waheguru would judge someone on their kesh, but rather on how much they love themselves.

Lets see what the future holds for me.

when peer budhu shah whose all four sons were killed in a battle fighting for guru sahib against mughals .... he came to guru sahib ... guru sahib was very happy with his seva for sikhi ... and asked peer ji today ask anything you want any thing ... peer ji saib dasmesh pita give me that what u love the most ... dasmesh pita smiled .... and told him to wait ...

guru sahib did there kanga .... and few hairs which were broken while doing kanga came out .... guru sahib give those hairs to peer ji and said i love them the most ....

in chamkaur sahib when guru ji left the garhi ... he didnt wear and footwear .... when dharam singh ji asked guru ji to wear some thing in there feet ... guru ji replyed no many of my singhs are dead in battle field and few singhs had there turbans of there head .... and if even by mistak there hair came under my footwear that would be a sin ....

for nirgun saroop of akal purkh hairs matter but it would be very long article .... and for sargun saroop thats dasmesh pita hairs matter the most ... it the line between being a sikh and not being a sikh ....

and its a request for your good sake .... give it a thought and instead of searching it on internet visit to some gurmukhs what they say .... reading and listen and very different things ....

and if guru ji didnt want u to be there sikh .... for any reason .... u will cut yoyr hairs soon .... i say its better u convert to some other relegion then ....

If you post on a site it is to get peoples opinions so when they take the timeout I suggest you read what they have to say to you.

You are 18, that's a good age to want to cut your hair, we lose any respect then and only care about what other people think about us. I can understand why you don't want to look like your father- Guru Ji that is- to come to think of it I cannot even think of one reason why a son would not want to look like his father who is the most perfect and handsome dad in the world.

But I want to look like I'm part of the family. If feeling like a disowned nothing makes you feel good then I'm happy for you mate.

The trouble is, you're all putting him on a guilt trip. If you cannot convince a man of the reasons for doing it in his soul, making him feel like scum isnt the right way to do that.

My cousin cut his hair when he was 18 --- he went to Uni, did the whole rudeboy thing. He's now 26 and is keeping kesh. He grew his consciousness out of his experience of life, through wanting to identify with his religion again, through consciousness and encouragement. The point is, he came back to it and is now slowly becoming devoted. It is free will and Guruji will always be caring for you no matter what. We didnt push him away or call him a sinner. We just said, we'll be here for you when you decide to come back. We love you and Guruji always will.

And this has happened amongst so many people I know.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!

    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
