we can still associate with everyone because they're all equal. we dont need to avoid any truth we should see whats out there and accept it

can we associate with the 5 reprobate groups that the guru told us not to associate with?

its hardly bahman to avoid bad sangat. brahmins do not sit with others because they are low caste, hence considered inferior, in a way that cannot be changed. true sikhs of the guru avoid bad sangat because it has a negative influence on themselves and a saadh sangat brings more bliss.

we all have the same jot inside us so we are sortov equal. but some are brahmgyianis, some are moorakhs. i know who id rather hang about with, since my sangat will affect me alot more than i think it will. i remember a line of bani, according to his command some are high and some are low.

son of guru gobind singh:

as for rehatnamas bhai desa singhs very explicitly say dont eat meat or fish, or drink alcohol (more than once!), but they go on to contradict this saying a little bit of booze is ok before a fight and it is acceptable to jhatka goats (no other meat mind) outside the langar, and then says a strict sikh will not even look at meat or booze :T: . other than this i have

never seen a specific jhatka quote saying what is ok and what is not ok. there is plenty of other quotes to say meat is not ok.

there are plenty of rehatnamas that say NEVER EVER eat kuttha and dont associate with those who do, but then it comes down to ur translation of kuttha.

Who is a meat eater, the person who eats meat? If so, then everyone is a meat eater. Even if a person is an amritdhari, he/she also eats meat everyday since there is nothing without meat. Then should we all stay away from each other? Please read what Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji says about the concept of Impurity in Asa Di //:

salok mehlaa 1.

jay kar sootak mannee-ai sabh tai sootak ho-ay.

gohay atai lakrhee andar keerhaa ho-ay.

If one accepts the concept of impurity, then there is impurity everywhere.

In cow-dung and wood there are worms.

jaytay daanay ann kay jee-aa baajh na ko-ay.

pahilaa paanee jee-o hai jit hari-aa sabh ko-ay.

As many as are the grains of corn, none is without life.

First, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green.

sootak ki-o kar rakhee-ai sootak pavai raso-ay.

naanak sootak ayv na utrai gi-aan utaaray Dho-ay. ||1||

How can it be protected from impurity? It touches our own kitchen.

O Nanak, impurity cannot be removed in this way; it is washed away only by spiritual wisdom. ||1||

mehlaa 1.

man kaa sootak lobh hai jihvaa sootak koorh.

akhee sootak vaykh-naa par tari-a par Dhan roop.

The impurity of the mind is greed, and the impurity of the tongue is falsehood.

The impurity of the eyes is to gaze upon the beauty of another man`s wife, and his wealth.

kannee sootak kann pai laa-itbaaree khaahi.

naanak hansaa aadmee baDhay jam pur jaahi. ||2||

The impurity of the ears is to listen to the slander

of others.

O Nanak, the mortal`s soul goes, bound and gagged to the city of Death. ||2||

mehlaa 1.

sabho sootak bharam hai doojai lagai jaa-ay.

jaman marnaa hukam hai bhaanai aavai jaa-ay.

All impurity comes from doubt and attachment to duality.

Birth and death are subject to the Command of the Lord`s Will; through His Will we come and go.

khaanaa peenaa pavitar hai diton rijak sambaahi.

naanak jinHee gurmukh bujhi-aa tinHaa sootak naahi. ||3||

Eating and drinking are pure, since the Lord gives nourishment to all.

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs, who understand the Lord, are not stained by impurity. ||3||

As far as meat is concerned, there is plenty of historical evidence that puratan Sikhs were used to eat meat. Meat was cooked in Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji's raj too. Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh Ji wrote, I think in Kalghidhar Chamatkar, that meat was cooked and served in Sri Guru Ram Das Ji's or Sri Guru Amar Das Ji's langar (I don't exactly remember how the sakhi goes. its been a long time). As most of the people know that Bhai Vir Singh Ji was a Brahamgiani. Also there are many many rahtenamas that do not allow Sikhs to eat Kutha, and the definitions of this word, according to SGPC rehat mariyada is, the meat prepared by muslim style, meaning halal, etc.

Below is the link to a post on Sikhnet Youth Forum regarding meant. This person believes that a Sikh is not allowed to eat meat. He/She has some sakhis related to Gurus' times. It is very informative. I havn't read the whole thing yet, and I don't know if his/her interpretations are true or not, since we have to go and research the resources ourselves in order to see what he/she is talking about. anyway, if anyone is interested, go to the link below:

Jsingh.. you are diverting the topic here.. I know for a fact that most people who eat meat they drink as well.. they don't have to be a heavy drinker... they are one of those people who say I drink once in a while....

I m not that confused actually... I don't feel like I m comitting a kurehit wen I m sitting next to someone who's eating meat... thats only because they are not amritdhareee or are from a different race/religion. I have some monay punjabi from work come to my house just cuz they want to hang out or check something out ... sometimes I do the same with them.. I really dont' feel like I m doing anything wrong.. I just feel uncomfortable seeing a dead animal wen they are eating it infront of me....

I don't think there's any excuse to start going to parties and stuff and start dancing around with these people...

If we were to keep up this attitude of I m not gona hang with u or not gona eat with u then I think our sikhi will stay very lmited and there will be no parchar done wats so ever....

yea i face the same situation too... almost all members of my family(aunties uncles cousins) and friends are monay and consume meat etc... i just tolerate them instead of displaying "elitist" behaviour by keeping away from them etc.

i think its okay to sit with them....we still need to live in this world and inter

act with so many other people in the course of our lives....sikhee will be sooo limited and inhibiting if such elitist behaviour takes root.

Bir Khalsa Ji, i feel beg apology if you feel i am diverting the topic here. I never had any intention of doing so. I just pointed out some facts that i have read or known by Guru Ji's kirpa, such as Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh Ji's stand on meat, etc. etc. and It does not mean I am diverting the topic. I also posted a post from Sikhnet Youth Forum witch takes a totally different stand from Bhai Vir Singh Ji. I did not take any side, just pointed out two different sides of the same issue. And by the way, this meat issue is not to be discussed on this forum as the moderators say :( And it is not a good thing to hate or stay away from what we call meat eaters, cuz nobody is vegetarians. We all eat meat each and everyday. So we shouldn't be hating anyone based on this minor issue. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that peole who argue on meat are fools. Therefore, we are all fools. At least I am ;)

bhul chuk di khima and bir khalsa ji and bhainji balwinder kaur ji if you think i tried to divert from the topic, please forgive ur brother

yeah, JSingh has made crazy points... really good points.. and in the end, when it comes down to it.. AKAL TAKHT rehit condones meat... if you look at what Guru Sahib said is the Headquarters for Sikh Issues, their rehit condones the eating of meat... therefore, i can't see how that rehit of not sitting with meat eating humans making sense... i mean... we ain't ANYONE to judge akal takht.. that's like judgin Guru Sahib himself... i can't see that rehitnaama making sense... my own personal views..

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
