Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh,

1- Try to relax some hours before your bed time. There are many ways to relax; warm baths, massage, meditation, soft instrumental music, and kirtan, simran, reading a good book of sakhis, etc.

2- Read this article: http://www.searchsikhism.com/sohila.html

3- Read those 4 shabads mentionned in that above article, and then read Kirtan Sohila; with full concentration and love.

4-You can do an Ardaas asking for protection and peace of mind... and Guru Ji will be there for you.

5-If you have any frightening thoughts or anything come to mind again, say Waheguru Waheguru~~ and peace will come again.

6-Try to go to bed earlier, to give yourself time to fall asleep. If you wake up again, you can do amritvela and sleep after that.

when i was younger i used to be scared SOOO much of burglaries, the dark, etc. BUT i started doing kirtan sohilaa every night and then i could feel a protection around me and i always used to have a peaceful sleep and i was never scared. Also, i had a doubt in my mind and i thought that i was sleeping so good just due to coincidence and that it wasn't anything to do with me doing kirtan sohilaa, so one night i never did it, and then that night i had nightmares, i couldn't get to sleep, i was sweating, it was horrible!

So it just goes to show that waheguru will protect you.

Yes, like so many have said before me, do your path and lots of naam simran (sometimes i even sleep with my mp3 on playing simran :D )

Check also what you eat during the day...cut down on sugar, sweets, processed food, as they are stimulants and can keep you awake. Don't drink or eat anything with caffeine: chocolate, tea, coffee (at least until you get some decent sleep)

Make sure on don't watch tv right before going to bed.
