Q: Some Sikhs still use Gill, Sandhu and Sidhu etc. as their last name and they treat Singh as their middle name, why is that?

A: Those Sikhs are not completely following the Guru. Guru specifically said to use Singh as your last name. Those Sikhs are much interested in preserving their caste. A real Sikh will only use Singh or Kaur as his or her last name.

No, I don't think that is right to say, sorry. I treat Singh as my middle name and whatever my last name is, when asked by someone or filling out an application, I will tell them. This doesn't mean I am not following sikhi and only care about "preserving" my caste.

I didn't write it. It's an e-mail I received today.

So Guru Gobind Singh Ji wanted to get rid of caste system by telling Sikhs to drop their family name and change it to singh (for the guys) and kaur (for the girls). But the thing is that SINGH is a caste name too. Singh is a Rajput (caste) name!

There much be another reason why males suppose to have Singh as their last name. I am not buying into this whole "getting rid of caste system" argument here.

well my uncle spent 2 years trying to get a job in a sikh solicitors firm, and he writes his name as singh but they always asked him what his family name was, and when he told them they wouldn't give him the job becuase it's a lower caste name! and this was only about 5 years ago in England aswell!

he works in a gora solicitors firm now.

Rather than changing surnames, the best way to tackle the problem is to keep our surnames and marry out of caste, make it a social norm that Amritdharis marry out of caste. Maybe other will then also follow. Singh or Kaur as a surname will still not stop the problem, people are to clever, all they have to do is go to your pind and find out what caste you are. And people are so sad and obsessed with caste, they will do these things.

In my opinion having surnames is not something which should be frowned upon, we see in gurbani surnames being used, like: Bhallai amardas gun teri, tere upma tohi ban ayai. And also: Bhetai Sodhi patshah Ramdas satguru khahvai

I think keeping surnames and challenging society directly by having a Sandhu marry a Bhogal or Bhatia for example, will just show society that these people do not give a damn. It’s a direct challenge rather than hiding from the issue. In India the problem will always exist unless this direct challenge is taken. Other than professionals of the following groups, the occupation of the rest, indicate their castes for example: Jats are farmers, Takhan do woodwork, bhapa have shops etc. In the future, maybe Sikhs in countries outside of India will not have problems with caste when it comes to marriage, but with people marrying out of Religion, hence the problem will fade for Sikhs outside of India.

I also think Khalsa was the name given to the Panth and not an individual. I’m not attacking people for changing their names to Khalsa, it’s just my opinion. Individually we were called Singh and Kaur. I think these names have a more of a deeper meaning than mere fighting caste systems, but are actually virtues.

forget the whole family name thingy.

its just a reason for us to be different, and seperate form each other.

sikhs have 1 family name and that being singh/kaur. which is something we all have in common, which brings us closer together.

make Singh/ Kaur your middle name. family last name is important because many Hindu or Guyaeness have Singh last name too.

it seems many people changed their surname from family name to singh... which no only sikhs but rajputs also use.. its better to have name + kaur/singh + khalsa

family name khalsa is better than

and agree 101% with ghorandhar

    • Part of the problem is the hostilities between India and Pakistan. If the border were open, Amritsar would easily become a huge trading city. Secondly, the National Highways Authority of India is constructing a new 6-lane expressway from Kashmir, through Amritsar/Jalandhar/Ludhiana to Dehli which will be part of the Ludhiana-Delhi-Kolkatta Industrial Corridor.  Maps of the New Silk Road show Kolkata as a key part of the "road". The Punjab to Kolkata expressway and rail connections will fulfill the ability to hook up to the New Silk Road.  In addition, while crossing to Pakistan via AH1 (Asian Highway 1) is difficult, India does connect to AH1 on the other side, towards the East. Finally, Punjab can trade with the world via Mundra port in Gujurat. Rail to Mundra, then sea onwards. Dubai is very close with a free port. If you send products to Iran, there are ground links onward to Europe.
    • Yeah, that's one possibility. Another I initially thought is that it's a Muslim trying to gather info. But then, you might ask, how does he know about Sikh textual sources. Well, you'd be surprised at their resourcefulness. A final possibility is he's a weak Sikh who was asked a question by a non-Sikh and now he's suddenly feverishly wondering where it's "written" that you can't marry a young child. To the latter, I would say, you're looking in the wrong spot. Gurbani isn't a 1428 page rulebook, like Leviticus or the Vedas: ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪ ਬੀਚਾਰਦੇ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ The Simritis and Shastras discriminate between charity and sin, but know not the essence of the Real Thing. Without the Guru, they know not the essence of the Reality, know not the essence of the Reality. Anand Sahib.
    • You're confusing two different things: One is merely adding starch to a turban to get a certain feel to the fabric. The other is tying your turban once and taking it off like a hat. It is this that people have a problem with. What's wrong with it is that Rehit says to tie your turban afresh every time. If you ask, "Where is that written?", it's written in Bhai Nand Lal ji's Rehitnama. @ipledgeblue didn't just make it up. Umm, no, bro. We're not evangelical Christians like President George W Bush of the US claiming to "talk to God" who told him to invade Iraq. "Speaking to him directly" basically ends up being doing whatever you feel like with the excuse that Guru ji told you to do it. If you still want to take your turban off like a hat, feel free to do so, but don't claim that it's Rehit.
    • You don't need to wear either a pag or dumalla in the gym. You can simply wear a meter or 1.5m small turban (gol pagg or round turban). It doesn't come off.
    • The reason you don't see anything wrong with it is because like a fish in water, you grew up in Western culture and imbibed it fully. It's very difficult to for parents to inculcate traditional culture while in the West. The reason there is a problem is because a kiss between a man and wife is a sexual act (I didn't say it's coitus, but it's still sexual.) By contrast a kiss between a mother and a child, for example, is not sexual. And in our culture, sexual acts are not allowed in public. Goras do allow it. And that's also the reason they have gay pride parades now with people walking around naked with children in attendance and so forth.
