How to overcome Lust

Lust exists in all of us as well as the other thieves; ego, greed, attachment, anger. Maya acts through these thieves leading us away from virtue but to sin. Therefore, it is important we avoid activities that will feed on our lust e.g. lustful movies/series, talking uselessly to the opposite gender via msn, in person, etc. A Sikh of the guru is tested daily. Daily, we receive Guru Sahib’s message through our nitnem. However do we act upon his message? If we do the opposite of what we read in our nitnem, we obtain Guru’s displeasure. Before taking out any act, we should think before we act. Ask ourselves questions: will it benefit me? Will I regret in the end?

However, it isn’t easy to construct this mind to perform good deeds since this mind is lead by the 5 thieves and thus feeds upon that which is why we always take enjoyment out of maya, and never or hardly experience the pleasure of Gurbani. For this reason Bhagat Kabir Ji has said:

kUtnu soie ju mn kau kUtY ]

He alone is a pimp, who pounds down his mind.

such a pimp attains total liberation. ||1||

Even though we are aware of what is right and wrong, our mind is easily weakened and is persuaded towards evil. We all are aware that stealing, cheating, lying are wrong deeds but still the mind is persuaded into committing these wrong acts.

We should avoid listening to our mind; instead we should do the opposite when it comes to performing evil acts. If we act on our evil desires, then we will only borne punishment in this human life and the life afterwards. Maya doesn’t leave any happiness for us in the end. Although she is pleasurable just for that time, afterwards she only leaves pain.

In order to take lust away from the mind, we have to use Gurbani and Naam. Only abiding by Guru’s word, we are saved. If we follow this wavering mind, then we fall into the grip of maya.

Lust loots our naam, it enters the body like a thief by diverting out attention through sensual pleasures. Therefore, the mind chases after outward pleasures and cannot concentrate on Naam, so we are unable to experience the pleasure of Vaheguru. Guru Sahib warns us to guard against our thieves. We must not entertain our lust. Watching tv, wasting time in useless activities, etc doesn’t do any good for us. We are told to live dead to maya, so we must not entertain our thieves through our senses since this will only churn our lust more.

It may be difficult at first to move away from sin and engage ourselves in naam and gurbani but the effort must be made if we wish to succeed in the end. From coming and going in reincarnation, we have gathered more filth, thus the separation between us and vaheguru keeps on building. It will only become worse if we keep on indulging in lustful thoughts/activities. It may seem alright to have lustful thoughts but soon these will turn to actions and in our next life we will become rapists, prostitutes.

Vaheguru has given us free will but we should ponder over the fruit of our actions. We should see what would benefit us more; weigh up the costs and benefits before taking our actions. Only naam and Gurbani can help us!

If we committed a wrong act, then do ardaas! Ask for forgiveness and to still this wavering mind. Also thank Guru Sahib for what he has given us since we should always be grateful for what we have.

Here is a list to help stop our lustful urges:

-Sing praises of God (kirtan)

-Read bani. Bavaan Akhri should be read since this will detach us from the world and attach us to Guru sahib’s lotus feet; naam and gurbani. Make sure you contemplate the meanings.

-Do Naam Abhiyaas because:

-Stay in good company, join the sat sangat. This will help us distinguish between vice and virtue.

-Avoid wasting time through talk, tv, games, etc. Realize what we came here for!

-Most importantly, do ardaas, nothing can be achieved alone; all power is in Guru’s hands.

-Remember Death! What will happen if we die tomorrow, or right now? We will be treated as fools, dishonored, etc. What support will we have then if we didn’t take the support of naam while alive! Lust doesn’t go with us when we die, Vaheguru does.

-Remember that Guru sahib is watching our every action. Don’t put shame to Guru sahib since you are his sikh. Act how Guru Sahib’s son/daughter would. Make Guru sahib proud of having a child like you.

-If possible listen to keertan all the time via mp3, ipod, and keep japing naam.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
