Guru Nanak Dev Ji statue

Recommended Posts

i agree with most of you, that idol worshiping it totally wrong and we should not pray to pictures and statues, etc, etc... i don't believe in it... however sometimes i think the same thing when i bow in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. i Know we do this out of respect and out of whats IN the book... but seems a lil strange? Someone once told me is it better to have the SGGS on the bookshelf so one can read it all the time.... or should we wrap in silk and let it sit there in a thrown? i said why can't we not do both? well i dunnno im confused lil princess but some stuff that some people do makes you think.... i got asked this question by a seven year old at sikh youth camp.. its amazing what kids can think...."why do we worship the SGGS then?"

Firstly I'd like to welcome you to the board welcomeani.gif

Secondly

Treat Guru Granth Sahib ji like you'd Treat Guru Gobind Singh ji.

Where would you want him to be - on the thrown - or in some other room by himself (bookshelf)

you can read GURBANI ANY TIME YOU FEEL LIKE

whether its 01 am or 11 pm!

Just go and do Namaskar to our Guru!

Bhai Gurdas Jee says,

"gur moorat gur shabad hai saadsangat vich pargatee aayiaa"

Bhai Saahib Jee also says,

"gur moorat gur shabad hai saadsangat mil amrit velaa"

I've heard these vaars in keertan but haven't actually seen a teekaa on them. However, the meaning seems pretty straightforward. It also seems to be a pretty clear definition of what guru ki moorat is.

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

i dont even kno y this discussion is taking place. guru ji was completely against idol worship, whats the difference between a picture and an idol? like Rochak veer ji said.

Pictures at times serve as reminders, and make you aware of Gurujee's presence, whether you are scared, or depressed, or having second thoughts about doing something wrong. You are reminded that Gurujee is watching.

aasaa sree kubeer jeeo kae punchupudhae 9 dhuthukae 5

Aasaa, Kabeer Jee, 9 Panch-Padas, 5 Du-Tukas:

ik ounkaar sathigur prusaadh

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

paathee thorai maalinee paathee paathee jeeo

You tear off the leaves, O gardener, but in each and every leaf, there is life.

jis paahun ko paathee thorai so paahun nirujeeo

That stone idol, for which you tear off those leaves - that stone idol is lifeless. ||1||

bhoolee maalunee hai eaeo

In this, you are mistaken, O gardener.

sathigur jaaguthaa hai dhaeo

The True Guru is the Living Lord. ||1||Pause||

brehum paathee bisun ddaaree fool sunkurudhaeo

Brahma is in the leaves, Vishnu is in the branches, and Shiva is in the flowers.

theen dhaev pruthakh thorehi kurehi kis kee saeo

When you break these three gods, whose service are you performing? ||2||

paakhaan gat kai moorath keenuee dhae kai shaathee paao

The sculptor carves the stone and fashions it into an idol, placing his feet upon its chest.

jae eaeh moorath saachee hai tho gurruunehaarae khaao

If this stone god was true, it would devour the sculptor for this! ||3||

bhaath pehith ar laapusee kurukuraa kaasaar

Rice and beans, candies, cakes and cookies

bhogunehaarae bhogiaa eis moorath kae mukh shaar

- the priest enjoys these, wh

ile he puts ashes into the mouth of the idol. ||4||

maalin bhoolee jug bhulaanaa hum bhulaanae naahi

The gardener is mistaken, and the world is mistaken, but I am not mistaken.

kuhu kubeer hum raam raakhae kirupaa kar har raae

Says Kabeer, the Lord preserves me; the Lord, my King, has showered His Blessings upon me. ||5||1||14||

First Mehl:

hi(n)dhoo moolae bhoolae akhuttee jaa(n)hee ||

The Hindus have forgotten the Primal Lord; they are going the wrong way.

naaradh kehiaa s pooj karaa(n)hee || a(n)dhhae gu(n)gae a(n)dhh a(n)dhhaar ||

As Naarad instructed them, they are worshipping idols. They are blind and mute, the blindest of the blind.

paathhar lae poojehi mugadhh gavaar ||

The ignorant fools pick up stones and worship them.

ouhi jaa aap ddubae thum kehaa tharanehaar ||2||

But when those stones themselves sink, who will carry you across? ||2||

GUru Nanak Dev Jee calls these idol worshippers fools. Why not just follow the path of gurmat instead of getting caught up in things like worshipping pictures. It's a lot simpler.

If this kind of worship can be avoided, then try to avoid it. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is our present Guru, and we can bow down to Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

On another note, what 'anon' said seemed correct.

If you see God in it, then by all means, mathetek. Brahmgianis are capable of seeing God in people. They won't see a normal human being, they'll see God. Since God is everywhere and perhaps in that statue, and if you see God in it, then mathetek. If you don't, then don't.

It's all based on belief...
