I agree with the Gursikhs who said more slogans during the march and more pre- & post-march speeches should be in English for non-Sikhs and those Sikhs who may be don't understand Punjabi as well as others. Many people were indeed looking puzzled along the route, although some were given leaflets.

A food and water tent in Trafalgar sq is also a very good idea - we travelled from Smethwick and had Guru ka Langar from the coaches at approx 10.30 at Oxford services and then only prior to leaving London at 5pm. We got back to Smethwick at 9pm - this would limit the end time of the rally for the travelling sangat, although not those from closer to London.

The large screen in the square was visible to all and many people were watching it. Would it be beneficial to have six/seven word statements appear on the screen one at a time to give key facts (the massacre, how many were martyred/missing, how many have been imprisoned without charge, no UN inspections allowed, the fake encounters, failed/white-washed enquiries - i.e. the words from the placards carried during the march) regarding the reasons for our protest in between speeches so that onlookers can understand. They would only need to go up for a couple of minutes at most to cover the key points.

The leaflets handed out gave details of sikh charities relating to victim assistance such as the Sikh Organisation for Prison Welfare - should their work be publicised by a speech or a video. Many Sikhs, especially those attending this particular event, would be happy to make a donation to such charities to help those who have suffered so much to protect the Panth but are not aware of those charities or that such organisations even exist. This is an ideal event for those charities to get support - how about sevadars collecting donations at the rally in collection buckets? Not everyone will get a leaflet or bother reading it, but the big screen seemed something many were focusing on at least towards the back nearer the National Gallery were I was for most of the rally.

I understand India is hoping to join the UN permanent security council, should this be publicised such that Sikhs can lobby their MPs to try and prevent British Government support.

A personal thank you to those of you that worked so tirelessly to organise and conduct the march and Trafalgar Sq rally. Thanks also to those that organised the transport and prepared Guru ka Langar for the travelling sangat.

First post, please forgive any gulti.

UK Sikhs commemorate 26th anniversary of Operation blue star

Punjab Newsline Network

Thursday, 17 June 2010

LONDON: 20,000 Sikhs from across the UK gathered in central London to take part in the remembrance march and freedom rally to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Operation blue star in Golden Temple in June 1984.

For the first time over 7,000 Sikhs were invited by the Sikh Federation (UK) via Facebook.

Sikhs gathered in North Carriage Drive Sunday, outside Hyde Park from 11 a.m and were addressed by numerous representatives from Gurdwaras.

The Remembrance March started at 1 p.m and wound its way through central London streets and ended in Trafalgar Square at around 2.30 p.m.

The Freedom Rally followed with both English and Punjabi speakers, a specially prepared 30-minute video was also shown to Sikhs and floral tributes were paid to the Shaheeds.

Politicians from all political parties sent messages of support and former Minister John Spellar MP addressed the Sikhs.

Gurfateh Jee,

I agree that last year was soo much better organised than this year. Last year the rally looked wicked!! This year people didnt know what to do while the speeches were going on at hyde park, no one was sorting out the coffins and black flags and the large banner were at the back.

Last year, while the speeches were going on, people dressed in black were holding the black flags getting ready, people were getting the coffins ready and when the procession started, after the Panj Pyare, they were the people with black flags and then coffins. it stood out and looked really good!!

One thing i was impressed with was the small group on youths who was walking along side the procession and explaining the everyone whats going on and handing out flyers/booklets. So many non-sikhs were very impressed because they actually knew what was going on, next year hopefully this is highlighted and something important to actually do.

    • If relationship with Guru is strong, then kanga is done twice a day, and turban should never be taken off or put on like a hat, there is a lot wrong with that as it is against rehit! maryada is to take off every layer of turban/pagh/dumalla individually, and tie fresh turban each time!
    • the whole 'your husband/wife is chosen for you'/sanjog thing is real, it's just that a lot of people end up marrying the wrong person. they did not end up with the person that was meant for them. my friend, you should marry someone who you feel a connection with and love. there are millions of sikh girls, i'm sure you can find someone who aligns with your sensibilities and who you can truthfully say that you love. sikhi does not say anything against love marriages. you can also be in a loveless arranged marriage which is a safe option b/c both families are more inclined to keep the union intact. i was one of those people who was like meh, i guess i'll just get arranged to some sikh. well i finally started dating for the first time this year and i'm getting married to someone that i love and cannot even imagine leaving. i think it's better to have lost & lost than never loved at all. unfortunately, a lot of people confuse love w/ looks & lust. a lot of men go for the fittest girl they can find and think they won the jackpot or something. in reality, your partner should be like an extremely loved best friend. there's a reason why it's a fact that the most stable and long-lasting relationships started as friendships.  i also think a lot of women are petty and divorce over small reasons, but there's other terrible things like high cheating rates as well. that's why the divorce rate in the west is high. be careful out there.
    • andrew tate praises sikhi too & likes sikhs. his brother also donated to sikh families iirc. they just like any "alpha" religion and tbh islam is the most "alpha" in their eyes. islam is very good at promoting that image. but imo a real alpha man doesn't command respect by beating up his wive(s) or forcing them to wear a burqa. a real man will have his woman listen to him w/o raising a hand or his voice, and command respect by being respectful. he leads by example and integrity. that's true masculinity. you get the idea. + yes, it's definitely true that islam is growing rapidly and making massive inroads. strength in numbers + belief will do that. but rlly it's just because of the birth rate. a lot of them are muslim b/c it's their "identity" just like how a lot of young sikhs will say they're "culturally sikh" or whatever. there just aren't billions of sikhs who lambast their identity everywhere and have strict and linear rules like in islam. besides, the reality is that islam and its followers are some of the most morally bankrupt. you can see all the weird trans rules in iran, bacche baazi in afghanistan, visiting brothels, watching p*rn, p*dophilia what goes on behind the scenes in countries like uae & qatar, etc, and come to your conclusions. you can google all the stats yourself and see which countries do the most of these ^.
    • stop associating with hinduism, that's the absolutely worst thing you can do as a sikh. not sure if you noticed but the entire world looks down upon and spits at india & hindus, literally no one respects them and considers them weak and cowardly. literally 1+ billion of them but not perceived as a strong religion commandeering respect.
    • you wrote a whole lot but told us nothing. what exactly did you do wrong to make you feel this way?
