It really is amazing how small we really are compared to the big scheme of things.

Here is another picture on a similar theme.

On first impressions this image may look fairly indistinct, but in reality it is perhaps one of the most important photographs ever taken. The tiny blue-white dot, halfway down the brown streak on the right is actually our home planet, the Earth, floating in the dark depths of space, photographed by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990 from a record distance of 3.7 billion miles. Astronomer Carl Sagan requested that the picture be taken, and he subsequently reflected that ‘all of human history has happened on that tiny pixel, which is our only home.’

This one blows the mind.

A look at a tiny fragment of space. Each of the coloured lights/blobs in the image is a galaxy like our own (which is called the milkyway). There are billions of them.....

Behold the Hubble Ultra Deep Field :respect:

Explanation: What did the first galaxies look like? To help answer this question, the Hubble Space Telescope has just finished taking the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), the deepest image of the universe ever taken in visible light. Pictured above, the HUDF shows a sampling of the oldest galaxies ever seen, galaxies that formed just after the dark ages, 13 billion years ago, when the universe was only 5 percent of its present age. The Hubble Space Telescope's NICMOS and new ACS cameras took the image. Staring nearly 3 months at the same spot, the HUDF is four times more sensitive, in some colors, than the original Hubble Deep Field (HDF). Astronomers the world over will likely study the HUDF for years to come to better understand how stars and galaxies formed in the early universe.

I'd like to point out that original HDF was done by pointing the pioneering Hubble telescope to what appeared to be a completely empty spot in space, devoid of any matter, for a long time. What we saw, astounded everyone; we saw millions of galaxies!

This is the nearest galaxy to us, called Andromeda

Andromeda is going to collide and cannibalize our own galaxy in a few million years.

Or the Milkyway is going to gobble up Andromedia! Plus I think it's in billions of years not millions.
