The Shabad of Aarta by Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj in Praise of the Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib begins:

Aarta Keejai Nanak Shah Patshah Ka

Har Har Deen Dunia Ke Shehan Shah Ka Aarta Keejai ...

Do the Aarta of Nanak, King of Kings

The Lord, Lord of Faith and the World, Do the Aarta…

This devotional Aarta in praise of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib is most rapturous and sublime in its content and appeal. After having composed this rare Hymn, Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj placed it at the Lotus Feet of His God - Father, Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, on His return from an Udasi and received supreme Blessings from the All Loving, All Merciful, Lord Guru Nanak.

At the very outset, He adores His God Father as the Lord Almighty and as the Master of all the Universes. He adores Sri Guru Nanak Sahib as the Supreme Paramjot.

This Sacred Aarta is incomparable. It reveals the Cosmic Vision of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. It also reveals, without a trace of doubt, that Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj adored and worshiped His Father as God and Guru. He hailed the Glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib in all the directions he visited during His long life.

This is a most inspiring hymn and a most sublime prayer to Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. It is a Sacred Masterpiece clearly descriptive of the Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. This Holy Aarta clearly unfolds and portrays all the emotions of Divine Love, of Adoration and of Worship, Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj cherished in His heart for His Guru and God Father, Sri Guru Nanak Sahib.

This holy Aarta in praise of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib is full of pathos and beauty and is the out-pouring of a most loving heart for the Beloved Satguru.

This Sacred Hymn also reveals to the mankind, the true, benign, gracious and tender heart of a holy son of 'Jot Roop Har Guru Nanak'. His intensely deep and abiding love overflows from the depths of His heart to the Holy Feet of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib.

He proclaims Sri Guru Nanak Sahib as the Supreme Lord of the Universe. He envisions the Sun and the Moon, all elements of Nature, Crores of gods and the whole creation engaged in singing the Glory of their Lord, Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. The whole creation is actively and incessantly participating in Sri Guru Nanak Sahib's holy Aarta and engaged in His Service.

Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj assures Paramgat and salvation to those blessed persons who so sing the Glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib through this wonderful and Holy Aarta. Through this blessing, the gracious and divine presence of Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj radiates out to all the children of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. This rare blessing further reveals the true, the unique and the angelic personality of Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj.

He hailed the Glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib all over, wherever He went and He was hailed as the Great Son of the Great Guru Nanak Sahib all over. He blessed the masses enmasse with the Divine Name given by Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj spent all his life in spreading the Divine Message of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj shines at the Pinnacle of all Spiritual Glory amongst the Yogis of the world. Holy, Baba Sri Chand Ji Maharaj is inseparable from the Divine Sri Guru Nanak Sahib and Sri Guru Nanak Sahib is inseparable from His Most Illustrious Son Baba Sri Chand Ji.

This Holy Aarta is truly a Marvellous Masterpiece, an incomparable Model, and a rare Jewel of True-Devotion.

right, now to look at this, we are looking at english translation which is a literal translation which i feel is giving a slightly tainted view.

From reading the history behind succession to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, remembering that this is our Beloved Guru, Guru of this Jagat and beyond, the true Guru, the one without blemish or stain, His leela in choosing his successor would be amazing. And amazing it was, how Guru Nanak Dev Ji tested and tried ALL Sikhs around him, but even the great spiritual beings like Baba Budha Ji, Baba Sri Chand Ji, could not fathom and could not pass the great test, could not understand the great leela, but only the one who the Great Guru chose for this task, could pass.

From reading Bhai Gurdas' Varan i think the issue was mainly that the sons of the Guru's thought they being the sons were entitled to certain things, rather than earning them like the Sikhs of the Guru. Just like how the brahmans thought they were entitiled to all the vastu that ordinary people had to work for.

From Satta and Balwands salok, its says that the Guru's sons turned their backs on him, this is not to be taken literally, it is a metaphor for saying that sons didnt listen to the Guru's order. Nowhere in the Gurnukhi does it say that they turned theuir backs on him as their Guru, ie they refused to accept him as their guru any longer.

Where it says "These evil-hearted ones became rebellious..." this should be reading "those of impure hearts" but the enlgish translation has made it refer directly to the Guru's sons, whereas it is actually refering to any Sikh who refuses the Guru's teaching.

Thanks for posting that Singh 559, as it shows us that if we wish to take Gurbani seriously, english is only a minor and often false step to realising it. Lets educate ourselves on Gurbani the traditional way!

The above shabads just show how untenable Baba Hari Singh's thoughts of the sons of the Gurus is. He says the greatest insult to someone is to say that your sons are worthless. We all know the history of Prithi Chand and Ram Rai and it seems that a Brahmgiani like Baba Hari Singh doesn't know much about them otherwise he wouldn't have made such an incorrect statement. I'm not surprised that these Babas are so active in promoting Baba Sri Chand because it gives them a basis to make their own Deras a legitimate part of Sikhi.

I think you should read again what you have written. I didn't know you could disregard the BACHAN of the Guru and still consider your self to a SIKH of the GURU? The whole shabad clearly states that they did not listen to the Guru and turned their backs on the Guru. I didn't know you can pick and mix the bachans of the Guru you. I think you have just given a whole new interpretation of the Guru-Sikh relationship, something that I have not come across before.

You are right, the translation of Dil Khotai as evil hearted is incorrect. But the verses could still refer to the Gurus sons or it could refer to others who did not accept the Gurus word. Not following the bachan of the Guru is a form of rebellion.

If anything the Shabads reiterate that one should not assume that just because someone is close to the Guru as their sons were that they were likely to follow the Guru and hence their status should earn them respect and people should follow them. I think you have just given a whole new interpretation of the Guru-Sikh relationship, something that I have not come across before.

Before we look at Gurbani we need to understand the Uthanka (situation) creating the emergence of Gurbani. The bachans in this situation were the test of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, to ALL the Sikhs when Guru Maharaj was looking for the successor to himself. Guru Sahib tested the Sikhs in many ways and they in turn all failed the tests reducing the potential candidates for Guruship to Bhai Lehna. Even Baba Buddha Ji, failed one of these tests, but the Bani in this instant is saying that the Sikhs failed to obey the Guru, in his testing of them, it is telling us that they failed to obey the Guru's bachan, in failing the tests he provided. Only Bhai Lehna obeyed all the way through, no matter how difficult or absurd the test was the Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave. The Sikhs didnt give up Guru Ji as their Guru, just becasue they failed. They didnt pick and mix any of the Guru's bachan in the sense you mean, the Sikhs of the Guru just couldnt pass all the tests he gave, except Bhai Lehna.

All the Sikhs who failed still called themselves Sikhs of the Guru, just as today, I fail the Guru's test, but still I regard the Guru as my Guru.

And also regarding the " disregarding of the bachan and still call yourself a Sikh" , do you know about Satta and Balwand, and what they did, yet Guru Ji has honoured them eternally by allowing them a place in Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

You are right, the translation of Dil Khotai as evil hearted is incorrect. But the verses could still refer to the Gurus sons or it could refer to others who did not accept the Gurus word. Not following the bachan of the Guru is a form of rebellion.

The verse refers as I have explained above, to the Sikhs who were unable to pass the test of Guru Maharaj.

If anything the Shabads reiterate that one should not assume that just because someone is close to the Guru as their sons were that they were likely to follow the Guru and hence their status should earn them respect and people should follow them. This is something that all those who are attempting to rehabiliate Baba Sri Chand's followers into Sikhi don't seem to understand.

The shabad of Bhai Gurdas is saying that, that one's status does automatically guarantee anything, the same message that Guru Ji gave th Brahmans and Siddhs.

The followers of Baba Sri Chand are the followers of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Baba Sri Chand had no other Guru, than his beloved father.

For further understanding of this shabad, I will recommend the readers to go to www.gurmatveechar.com and look in the folder of Sant Gurbachan Singh Bhindranwale, where he has done larivar katha of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and look in Ang 966 and And 967.
