been advised sat-naam is the oppiste of ego

Naam has different names in gurbani, Unhand Shabad, Naad, Thoor, Kinkiri shabad its only through Naam can we defeat Punj Choor, we get to Naam through Gurmantar Jaap which is learnt is Sadh Sangat

eis dhaehee andhar panch chor vasehi kaam krodh lobh mohu ahankaaraa |

Within this body dwell the five thieves: sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism.

anmrith loottehi manamukh nehee boojhehi koe n sunai pookaaraa |

They plunder the Nectar, but the self-willed manmukh does not realize it; no one hears his complaint.

Through Jaap we progress stages to get to Naam, from Roum Roum simran to Pargash to other stages.

vaajae panch sabadh thith ghar sabhaagai |

The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, vibrate in that blessed house.

ghar sabhaagai sabadh vaajae kalaa jith ghar dhaareeaa |

In that blessed house, the Shabad vibrates; He infuses His almighty power into it.

panch dhooth thudh vas keethae kaal kanttak maariaa |

Through You, we subdue the five demons of desire, and slay Death, the torturer.

This is the meaning of life to reach Naam this is the hukam of Guru Nanak to reach Naam and win the Five Thives which have been the cause of our seperation.

eaeko naam hukam hai naanak sathigur dheeaa bujhaae jeeo |5|

The One Name is the Lord's Command; O Nanak, the True Guru has given me this understanding. ||5||

And due to the confusion within the Sikhs especially our Punjabi folk, who looking for a quick fix, look to baba to give them Naam, but it states Only 1 being can give you Naam

bin sathigur ko naao n paaeae prabh aisee banath banaaee hae |9|

Without the True Guru, no one finds the Name. Such is the making which God has made. ||9||

bin sathigur saevae naam n paaeeai parr thaakae saath n aaee hae |5|

Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. You can read until you are exhausted, but you shall not find peace and tranquility. ||5||

.... Five Thives which have been the cause of our seperation....

True. Five thieves (kaam, krodh, loab, moah and hankar) acts as the wall between our soul and true jot of waheguru. Guru sahib jee identifies these panj(5) chor(thieves) publicly and stated that his followers need to fight and over these evils in order to be in circle of true sikh sangat.

The reason why we say our religion is straight forward is because of the simplicity and no drama. Guru sahib jee clearly says that human are victims of these five thieves and it takes mighty strength of will power of human to stand against these five thieves. However, our guru sahib jee helps us to stand against the evil force of these panj chor. He says, go ahead take one step and in return he will take thousand steps to reach his true sikh.

Do not expect that if u take one small step just because thinking that guru sahib will take care of rest of your problems. It takes pure mind who initially start to stand against 5 evils 100% and then only guru sahib jee help his disciple. When in battlefield to start war against five evils then be ready to go in offense position and your defense will stay strong if you have enough kamai, which is rehat in terms of how true you are to your guru.

5evils vs. you:

Your best defense is:

1. Naam - gurmantar - Amrit

2. Amritvela and recitation of gurbani

3. Discipline and true ethics/moral

4. Live your life according to Sikhi in a very practical sikh terms: ex. No frauds with anyone etc.

Guru sahib jee help if we are true sikh of his unique yet very simple lifestyle..

    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
    • Good way of putting it, bro. One of the ongoing themes of Gurbani is the fake saint. Whether it's fake babas in Punjab or English-speaking personalities in the West, it's an continuing problem of religion through the centuries (and it's not exclusive to us by any means, this applies to all human societies).
