The Muslims follow a historic precedence. Prophet Mohammad used to execute people like this. Hundreds of Jews(all unarmed men) belonging to Banu Quraiza tribe were beheaded like this and afterwards their women and children were distributed among the Sahaba. And since Prophet Muhammad is regarded as the most perfect man, the faithful momin will follow his example and regard it as Sunnah
