Why Ambedkar did not become a Sikh ?

Recommended Posts

A great book has been launched which tells the reasons why Dr. Ambedkar did not become a sikh.

https://sikhsiyasat.net/2018/05/26/new-book-investigates-who-was-responsible-for-dr-ambedkar-not-joining-sikhi/

Dr. Ambedkar used to say :

"Sri Guru Granth Sahib is my spiritual guide. SGGS provides a casteless, egalitarian society which guarantees equal rights to all human beings. Following Gurbani enshrined in SGGS, we can become free and a sovereign people. The Sikh gurus and generation after generation of Sikhs have laid down their lives to live in freedom, dignity and honor. Thus, following in such foot steps we can definitely break shackles of slavery of the Mulnivasi bahujan samaj perpetuated by the upper-caste Hindu minority people. "

Dr Amedkar was very curious to become Sikh along with his large followers. He made ceaseless efforts to attain this goal. But, he was encircled by the then circumstances and situations, besides betrayal by certain people in his group and deceitful and mean tactics used by the then deceitful, Braminical leaders led by Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. Others included were Rao Bahadur MC Raja, Dr BS Munje, Raj Gopal Achyriya, Madan Mohan Malviya, etc. Sikhs response to his wish to join the Khalsa Panth was definitely positive.

The second part may be true but it doesn't have much to do with why Ambedkar did not choose Sikhism for himself and his followers.

He saw the treatment of Dalit Sikhs by other Sikh groups and decided all the equality being preached was simply just on paper. It's a shame really, as Ambedkar's followers would have significantly swelled the Sikh population in India. It's unfortunate that we still have not learnt anything from this incident.

and thus you swallow the Brahmin's lie too ... if englishmen could note that 'all an spurned and reviled untouchable had to do was become a khalsa and return home a hero and sardar garnering respect from all ' ....why wouldn't all natives not know this ???

Because it wasn't practiced on a scale where the day to day experiences of a Dalit or other so-called lower caste individual reflected that ideal. If things are barely improving at a snail's pace in these times, imagine how obvious and pervasive it must have been back then.

I have noticed that lately we have been putting our shortcomings as blames on others shoulders, which is not a healthy sign for us.

He never wanted to become a Sikh. It was a whole drama to put Sikh kaum down.

He put many conditions and I don’t agree with such setup. SGPC agreed with most of his conditions - one example is Khalsa college was established in Bombay.

According to Sardar Mall Singh, the author of this book, Ambedkar was very much interested to become a sikh in 1936 but Gandhi told him that he shud think of changing his religion only after 10 years or so.

Ambedkar was scared that if  he became a sikh, the hindus will kill, loot and burn the houses and properties of his fellow dalit people.
