"A single wedding band is allowed"

Tell that <banned word filter activated> your married to your religion.

lol good comeback. i'd try it

On the other hand, Does it depend on the Material it is made of. Check in to that, if the Wedding back is made of some type of metal, then it is no different than you wearin gyour Kara.

I've never seen a wedding band, so i wouldn't know blush.gif

akjforever has a great point

yeah you were done wrong and you may want to fight it

but take it as a sign and move on

in the states with have groups like the Sikh Coalition and United Sikhs

as suggested you should contact the British Sikh Federation

they used to have a website but it no longer works

www.british-sikh-fed.org.uk

you can try emailing Kashmir Singh at british_sikh_fed@btopenworld.com or british.sikh.fed@talk21.com

or try joining the Sikh Agenda yahoo! I'm sure there are some lawyers who are members

you can also try

www.sikhhelpline.com there are loads of ways to get in contact with them

If you talk to a lawyer or some other organization then do not post the following info without their direction. If you choose not to do this then provide us with a few more details. Provide people here with with more details. Which store? The date of the incident. How long you have been working there. The name of the manager. Did anyone witness the exchange.

I am (name), working at dominoes at (location). I have been working here without incident for (x months x years).

On x date at approxiamately x time x name manager came to me and said x. I said x. then x ..........

If some of us are inclined to follow up, here is a starting point... some contact info for dominos. And if a sikh organization gets behind this great, but if people reading this are waiting for that then you are missing the point.... each individual is a sikh organization only then do we live up to our claim to sikhi.

Be polite, be articulate, be softspoken while v. outspoken.

Go back to work if they have have not sacked you but keep your Kara on. If they tell you to go home or say we are sacking you then ask them to put it in writing exactly why they are sacking you, then contact a solicitor and sort the silly idiots out.

I was working at the Dominos Pizza store, Leicester on London Road. Ive been working here for approximately six months (i began my employemnt around June period).

On the 10th of December 2004 at 18:30 Hours I arrived at work as normal, to which a manager unknown to me, whos name is 'Lee' asked me to remove my "bracelet" - (referring to the Kara which is sacred in the Sikh faith). I kindly told him that it wasnt a bracelet, more of a religous artefact. To which he replied "I know what it is, take it off". I kindly replied "I am not allowed to remove it" to which i was given a threat of "do you wanna work here?". Seeing that I was threatened of choosing employment over religion I replied with the utmost respect "If I am not allowed to express my religion freely then no", to which the manager replied "alright go home then". I kindly obliged and left for my home. I then rang further to my dismissal at around 19:00 hours and I asked "lee" If I could have confirmation in writing as to why I had been sacked. To this he replied in the rudest of tones "they arent my rules, they are Andys (franchisee's) rules, if you

want to know why then phone him". To which i replied "thank you". Upon hearing what had happened my father phoned the store and asked to speak to "Lee". My father asked him why he had sacked me and to this "Lee" replied, "I havent sacked him, ive just sent him home for not following the rules". His feeble excuse was that in the past I had taken the Kara off (this isnt a lie because when I first started at work I was a little un-educated about my faith but soon I realised that the Kara is a part of me and I cannot remove it just as I cannot remove my arm). I was scheduled to work today and I chose not to go in because I knew that the same problem would arise. Dominos pride themselves on being "equal opportunities" employers but judging by this act, they are far from it. The greatest shock to me is the fact that the company allows a "single wedding band" but a religious article of faith is dis allowed because of hygiene? Does marriage come before religion? I have been greatly shook by this incident and require further assistane in what I can do, please help.

khalsa04, if you keep so much respect for one kakkar, then i suggest you keep all 5 kakkars. bhai sahib ji, your not even a sikh (because you have not accepted maharaj da hukam of taking amrit), remember sikh pehla, singh baadh, the concept of sant siphai works the same way. if you think you are so much of a sikh, then dont go back to dominos, sikhi says not to touch meat, let alone even eat it. gustaphi maaf, but if you think you are that much of a sikh (who cuts his hair, eats meat etc, and that is very sikhified <_<) why do all this? if dominos have given you the faisla of "get lost" then dont go back, i am sure a 16 year old such as yourself can find better work, why not do an apprenticeship in, lets say plumbing? or be an electrician, alot of money in there you know.

anyway

gustaphi maaf

This topic deals with the discrimination against the individual person's belief. I am 100% sure that if you take this case in court, they will beg you guys to drop the case. If i were you.. no matter how religious i am or i am not, i would teach these guys some lesson. Think legally all the time when you are working at such age.

If i were you:

I would go back to work and ask for my time, if they say No you can't work and give the reason that you were absent for these many days and so on, then forget about it. If they say u can't work anymore because of the kara, then tell them to fire you and give the reason in writing. If you get the reason then seek the justice through courts. They sure will do favor on your side...

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
