True, a visit to him was more effective than all the anti-dowry legislation that Indian state had enacted. Interestingly, the Samaj Sudhar movement of the Kharkoos in the late 1980s virtually eliminated dowry deaths in Punjab. Not only this but hundreds of women who had been sent back to their parents home by their in laws because of their not bringing enough dowry were respectfully taken back by their in laws due to the commands of the Kharkoos. During that time you hardly heard of a famer committing suicide, the bank managers or the artiyas would never dare to send legal notices to harass the farmers. Virtually no drug abuse. Expensive marriages were no existent as the Kharkoos had banned more than 11 in a barat.

Yh I dnt think people realise how much positive change kharkus brang into punjab. Iv got family wedding movies at home from early 90s and bharat only has around 10 people in it.  Dowry everything was banned.
