I though Hindu meant thief in Arabic and had been applied to the people and area. I heard Sant Jarnail Singh Bhinderwale Shaheed Ji say something like that. And that all the Vedas and Puranas etc use the word Brahman. So it left me feeling like using the word Hindu was nonsense and an insult ultimately to Vedic culture and its' people.

Hindu was just a term used for those residing past the Indus river.  In many ways, this was the border into India for invaders. After a while, it kinda just developed into Hindu.
