Sikhsangat News Section Story On Nihangs

Recommended Posts

"Though many nihangs have now joined the mainstream, majority remains tied to the old ways - the vow to celibacy, abstention from meat and drink, close conferment to the Sikh holy order - the symbols and diktats of the faith."

I have noticed many news reports on sikhsangat news section are reports which are very ignorant of sikh beliefs. Don't get me wrong, the news section is very informative but since this site is dedicated to the panth and people come to this site knowing that they will get a Sikh prespective on things, stories like the one above are very misleading. In the news story about Nihangs at Damdama Sahib, they talk about Nihangs living the old way and being celibate. Celibacy is not and never was promoted in the khalsa way of life. There is so much information on the internet these days and it is impossible to keep it moderated but I think this site can do a huge sewa by being careful on what is posted and represented to the internet community. just a humble suggestion. I thought about emailing the admin but I thought the sangat may want to see this and may have noticed similar things.

peace.

I agree with you brother that its not according to sikhi regarding the lifestyle of nihang singh mentioned in that artice but no matter how negative the story/artice is but it shows the truth regarding that area. I lived 2 years in the area of damdama Sahib (Residence 2kms from gurdwara sahib) and i am very sure that its right about this group of people *edited*

News like this is sure not positive about sikhi but it gives you the reality regarding this particular region and it is true. I maybe the only one to think that all news service should bring both negative & positive of our community.

Speaking of celibacy- let's drop your attitude "Iknowitall" for once and go to puratan samparda's(taksal, nirmale, nihangs, seva panthis etc). They will tell you importance of jat sat in sikhi. It was same jat sat(celibacy) along with bhagti made shaheed baba deep singh maharaj pick up 80 kilo sword and made enemies chew iron. Do you guys have any idea how much energy you perserve by keep jat-sat??

Sikhi is not your black/white religion as people make out to be. Celibacy and gristh jevan both are parvan in Sikhi.

According to spiritual oral traditions, there was rule in misl that whosoever is gristhi should refrain from doing bhog bilas(sex) with their singhani during war times..without jat sat mere mortals like us cannot even stand a second in real wars.

You got baba deep singh shaheed who was badshah of celibates who fought enemy, his legacy speak for itself. so think before you speak against celibacy.

Don't blame celibacy(jat sat virtue) for your own short comings.

Sat Sri Akal:

"Celibacy and gristh jevan both are parvan in Sikhi."

Let'f face it, it is not Jat Sat that imbues a person with strength, but Akaal Purakh. If you have the exampe of Baba Deep Singh, I have the example of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, who had four biological Sahibzadae (though all his Khalsa is Sahibzadae) and fought with the ferocity of the name Singh. The Gurus were Gristh-jeevani and always stated in Gurbani that it is the Almighty that bestows strength. If example of Guru Sahib is some sort of exception, go examine Sant Jarnail Singh Ji...he had a wife and two children and even author Khushwant had to open his foul mouth and state that Sant Ji fought like a tiger.

Celibacy and yoga may bestow physical power though effort and meditation, but to a Gursikh, be he/she celibate or gristh, it is the Guru which provides the Strength of Lions. All those yogis and Indian sages immersed in jat-sat and yoga could not do a single thing to stop the Mughals, but gristhi jeevani Gursikhs did...was it jat sat or the power of the Guru's Amrit? Sorry if this may not conform to your views, but that is what Gurbani states.

"jat sat mere mortals like us cannot even stand a second in real wars."

Well, this flies in the face of the recent Shaheeds and Soormae 1978/1984 and afterwards.

Bhul Chuk Maaf.

Without marriage one will be helping to destroy the balance of the nature. Celibacy is not exactly condemn by sikhi nor this concept is supported. Ghristi jeevan is must but still there are cases where one does not feel of having the family as it will affect their social or even spiritual life.

You forgot to add- Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had three*(edit not four) wives according to Damdami taksal - Read Gurmat Maryada by sant gyani gurbachan singh ji bhindranwale.

so what do you suggest we should copy cat our guru 110% percent? Sikh regardless of it's state. at the end of day- sikh is sikh.. cannot copy his Guru.

If example of Guru Sahib is some sort of exception, go examine Sant Jarnail Singh Ji...he had a wife and two children and even author Khushwant had to open his foul mouth and state that Sant Ji fought like a tiger.

I see Sant jarnail singh bhindranwale as gristhi who has became celibate later on his life, when he took jathedari of damdami taksal. One of the rule (maryada) for whosoever is jathedar/head mahant in puratan sampardha. They must be give up gristh jevan and be celibate after the jathedari. You can re-confirm it from any puratan dera if you wish.

At the end of day, Gurpursad that's all it matters. nobody is denying it. but that does not mean, gursikh should not adapt virtues like jat-sat when needed. Nobody is promoting celibacy. If nihangs are celibates. It's because of their very martial nature. Also you got nihangs in general does not have to be celibate but only farladhari nihang, jathedar nihang must be celibate because when singh take jathedari position or gets farla, he/she takes a vow to serve panth and only khalsa panth. They must take a vow.

If one wishes to look deep into this subject then please go to puratan sampardha's and search your answers there, if one wish not try to understand other side of coin and instead make judgements on them. Then blame onself instead of blaming celibacy.

Maybe one needs to draw a line between (a) Being a hardcore celibate yet harbouring lustful thoughts within the mind, and (b) Not being a celibate and over-indulging oneself in a sexual/physical relationship with one's spouse. The reason I say this is because in both the above given situations, one cannot progress spiritually. Whats the point in being a celibate if your mind can't stop thinking about lust? Also, whats the point in being a grihast when all you do the entire day is...yupp exactly...

Baba Deep Singh did get married as per request of his parents. Perhaps Baba jee didn't mind not getting married (God knows) however respecting his parents wishes he returned home from Anandpur Sahib, taking leave from Guru Sahib.

Baba Deep Singh jee then went to his home village visit his parents and also got married. During this time, the Anandpur Sahib evacuation happened. When Baba Jee recieved the news he was saddened. Later he recieved a message from messenger of Guru Sahib that the Guru has safely arived at Damdama Sahib and that Baba jee is required. So Baba Deep Singh jee left his village, leaving his elderly parents and wife and went to see Guru Sahib. There Baba jee stayed and helped to scribe the Guru Granth Sahib ji's Birs.

Bhul chuk maaf.

In regards to Gurbani and Householder Jeevan:

Translation:- "Instead of wearing these beggar's robes, it is better to be a householder, and give to others."

(ang 587)

Translation:- "He alone is a householder, who restrains his passions and begs for meditation, austerity and self-discipline. He gives donations to charity with his body; such a householder is as pure as the water of the Ganges."

(ang 952)

Conclusion:

Irrespective of how you live underlying thing is NAAM SIMRAN, SEWA and BHAGTI

Translation:- "He may be a Qazi, a Mullah or a Sheikh, a Yogi or a wandering hermit wearing saffron-colored robes; he may be a householder, working at his job; but without understanding the essence of devotional worship, all people are eventually bound and gagged, and driven along by the Messenger of Death. ||3||"

(ang 1169)

We shouldn't be in "DUALITY" (here and there/ sitting on the fence). Either live in the world like Grist family person and do Bhagti or leave the world completely... don't put one foot there and the other elsewhere.

Bhul chuk maaf if i have said anything wrong or incorrect.

    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
    • All of these are suppositions, bro. Linguists know that, generally, all the social classes of a physical area speak the same language, though some classes may use more advanced vocabulary. I'm talking about the syntax. That is, unless the King is an invader, which Porus was not. When you say Punjabi wasn't very evolved, what do you mean? The syntax must have been roughly the same. As for vocabulary, do you really think Punjabis at the time did nothing more than grunt to express their thoughts? That they had no shades of meaning? Such as hot/cold, red/yellow/blue, angry/sweet/loving/sad, etc? Why must we always have an inferiority complex?
    • I still think about that incident now and then, just haven't heard any developments regarding what happened, just like so many other things that have happened in Panjab!
    • There was a young Singh from abroad who went to Anandpur Sahib Hola and got into a fight with some Punjabis who were playing loud non-religious music. He had bana and a weapon or two. There were more of them than him.  He ended up losing his life. Don't be like that. Not worth it to fight manmukhs. @californiasardar1 ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥ Argue not with a fool. p473
