Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached, he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide. The man was stuck by the the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached, the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf. As he came up to the person, he said: "You must be crazy. There are t…

An inspirational e-mail I got: Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh pyareooo Sejh (easy) paath (more properly named sadhaan paath) is a complete intermittent (this means bit by bit) reading of The Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Included below is an English translation of Sikh Rehit Maryada which outlines how this is to be undertaken. (This link has a panjabi version available.) http://www.sgpc.net/rehat_maryada/section_..._chap_five.html Why do this? It is recommended in The Sikh Rehit Maryada- but we do if for the enjoyment of gurbani and for the sustanence it offers - we do it when we have some obstacle or hardship in life- we do it for important occasions like bi…

As a Sikh starting University… By Manvir Singh Khalsa I have written an article about my experiences starting university. Some people may find it useful because sometimes if you are starting university you have a lot concerns and worry about what it will be like and how you will cope. During the summer holidays before I started university, I was looking forward to starting university. I had been brought up and lived in an English area and not been exposed to a large Sikh community or presence, therefore I was excited to go to King’s College London because it was known for having a large number of Sikh students and had the largest Sikh Society in England. I heard peopl…

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing in the heady atmosphere above the earth. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check. Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, "Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" They soared beautifully even …

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh The following sakhi was told by Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji to the sangat: “One time at Sachkhand Sri Anandpur Sahib Ji as kirtan was going on Sahibzade Baba Ajeet Singh Ji and the singhs under his command were involved in an all out battle with the Hindu Hill Rajas. Thousands of bullets and arrows were flying in every direction. Many Sikhs were sat down focusing on the holy feet of Dasam Pita, Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. A few Sikhs however had their focus elsewhere. One such Sikh was a young Singh who quickly stood up as an arrow flew past his face. Guru Sahib noticing this said, “It is the religio…

You're used to "the news" by now in the last few years: "This is a tough environment." "Unemployment continues to rise." "People are working harder than ever with less to show for it." By regularly listening to the news you may start to question whether the sky is actually falling. (Don't worry -- it isn't.) High achievers know it's critical to maintain a positive mental outlook, no matter what's going on around them. So how do you develop and maintain this attitude? Here are some ideas I use personally to stay positive in a negative world: 1. Mission Statement The starting point of all high achievement is a clear sense of purpose. So your Mission Stat…

The entire journey of spirituality is under God's will. Only the ones destined by God are going to be able to do it (all of us must pray to God. He listens to your truthful prayers and destines them). The process starts with getting the Gurparsadi Naam (initiation) from a Sant Satguru ( a Saint who is authorized by the God to initiate people on the path of Truth). "Har ka sant satguru satpurkahaa ... God's Sant SatGuru, O True Primal Being: I offer my humble prayer to You. I am a mere insect, a worm. O my SatGuru, I seek Your Sanctuary. Please be merciful, and bless me with the Light of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1|| O my Best Friend, O Divine Guru, plea…
