  1. Here's a humble attempt at translation the opening section of Professor Sahib Singh's preface to his Jaap Sahib teeka. May Waheguru bless his das to continue to learn about the faith and develop his modest linguistic ability. I'd like to thank Laal Singh of sikhwareness.com for looking over the translation and explaining certain colloquial terms and suggesting various improvements. I'm including the original Gurmukhi text for readers. Feel free to post any suggestions for improvements:

  2. Clear them, he caused too much gandh here in Fresno. He needs to be stopped. We all need to educate ourselves and prevent him going around and spreading more hate and misinformation. Everywhere he goes we need to severely educate the people in such a manner that the one or two innocent sangat (realistically) don't fall for darshan ram because on account of the sheep who consider darshan ram their 'guru'. He goes to the Gurudwaras where the predominant people are Sunday Sikhs who don't have an interest of taking Amrit or giving their kids a Sikh saroop and go to parties and drink on the weekend. I am now seeing the after effect on the Gurudwara he has gone to and he's bringing nastik, antigurmat thinking amongst the Sangat. I'm not in a good mood right now...

  4. Very nice thread. My suggestion would be to replace golak with commercial grade credit cardmachines. Two reasons: people will donate more and most important is financial accountability in papers.

  5. Another brilliant translation Veerjeo! Prof. Sahib Singh Ji's writing style is very lucid and that quality reflects beautifully in your translations! Sincerely hope these translations are used by Parcharaks when debating with Darshan and his followers about Sri Dasam Granth Baanis, and about the 1699 Amrit Sanchaar.. Dhanvaad once again!

  6. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! The main reason for doing chaaliya/ chaleese is to form a new habit e.g. amritvela, incresing nitnem etc. However, they are also done to achieve specific goals or wishes or for health etc. In brief, you're meant to make an asaan e.g. a chaadar or cloth in a clean place, keep some water close by, light a jyoth and dhoof/samagri. Do ardas and start the jaap. Should be started at the same time exactly everyday for 40 days. The first 2 weeks will be the hardest, then it begins to become a habit and gets easier. Not easy, but with Guru Ji's kirpa, it's possible. Best done with the guidance of a Mahapursh, or someone who's done them before. Akaal Sahai!

  9. Reading Bhai Nand Lal's persian hymns you'll see he makes many references to sufi and hindu mystics same with Gurbani making references to dhroo, prahlad and other devotees of the past, yet today if a Sikh makes reference to a non-sikh spiritual being all hell breaks loose..

  11. Vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh What a shame that our Gurdwara Sahib are acting like this, they should be leading examples of Sikhi. Makes you think why they even bother being part of running a religious institution. I am making placards for the day and my family is all coming down we hired a van , we have to make a stand and stop this from happening. may dad was saying if we can even stand up for this then whats the point in being Sikhs. The growth of cults and young sikhs moving away from their faith is due to the people running our religious places. They dont practice what Guruji preached. May Guruji give these ppl some wisdom. Would Guru Nanak Dev Ji be proud off this type of activity, Jesus went into the temples ended the wrong things ppl were doing, every one has to make a stand. Heard the sikh channel are doing a program about this and we should contact the local press and tv to come down and see whats happening. I just read about the Gurdwara reform movement in the 1920s this is a a great example for us, we need to remove the bad ppl from our gurdwaras. Panth Kee Jeet

  13. Since Hondh-Chillar grave findings, U.S. investigation into Congress Party role in '84 pogroms and kirpan issue in Canada, there have been a spike in incidents that have made Sikhs look bad. It's not a coincidence. Every time these issues come up, there is always a story to distract us.

  38. The one that really works, and I think it has been mentioned, is to place the alarm clock far away from the bed. Put it in a drawer or cupboard at the back. If you can lock the drawer then lock it and put the key in another drawer. When the alarm goes you physically have to get out of bed to turn it off, or have to find the key to uplock the drawer and then turn it off. Then head straight for the door and into the bathroom.

  39. If in 50 years from now a group of ignorant people say that Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is not the Bani of the Gurus, then do we say which bani is distorted and which one is not about Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj? The same people are being born over and over and putting doubt on Gurus Bani. Those that are Gursikhs, they see the play of Akal Purakh and bow to his play and never lift a finger at the Gurus Bani. The Bani which people all call Guru today will be slandered by the same soul, but they would be in different forms. Akal Purakhs play is so wonderful that it puts the most intelligent person into the pits of hell. In due time, the Bani of Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj will not be understood by the general public and they will yell to the sky that i know Sri Waheguru ji would never write these words, this is not his Bani.

  40. Che was big. He came from a well to do background but felt strongly for the poor and exploited. If you read the Motorcycle Diaries you can see his early thinking and how he visited various exploitative companies in South America and openly criticised them. He was a big thinker and had a very deep understanding of global politics and history. I think sant ji came from a much more humble background in terms of wealth, opportunity and education but was more than a match in bravery. There are big differences between Che And Bhindranwale. Che's thinking covered a global scale and involved helping armed struggles against imperialism that DID NOT involve his own people. SO he was a true internationalist. I think sant ji was more focused on ground level Sikh problems. Che's education also meant that he did other high level governmental administrative roles such as taking charge of the banking system. I don't think sant ji would have the political side to do such stuff. There was an incident in Che's early life when he came across some poor people and gave away his own asthma medicine to them, despite suffering badly from asthma himself. Reminded me of the principles behind the "sucha sodha" sakhi. It is hard not to notice how Che's life, in how it lived it, corresponds to the IDEAL of the Khalsa we have. Fighting for the poor and oppressed and sacrificing all. The fact that he went abroad and directly helped those that were not from his own ethnic group puts him apart from me. He is the most potent example of a universal revolutionary. I think Sikhs could learn a hell of a lot from him.

  41. Hang on a minute this is the same guy who sat on a throne and got people to touch his feet whilst he wore a Kalgi plume on his turban like Guru Gobind Singh. Whilst people came to touch his feet including quite eldery singhs and singhanis he hit their heads with his hand and behind him there was a massive picture of himself. They all came with birthday presents of which he had piles. This guy can't seriously be telling other people about fake babas. 43. Jassa Singh Ji - you seem not to be familiar with nihang singh terminology - any singh with a Farla is either called Baba Ji, Mahakaal Ji or Jathedar Ji. Baba Sukha Singh Ji is not the Jathedar of a certain area rather he is part of the fauj of Baba Fateh Singh because he has been blessed with a farla and therefore deserves this respect. If you lived in Nihang dals in india you would realise that any farla vala singh is never addressed by his name but by the titles - Mahakaal Ji, Baba Ji, or Jathedar Ji. I take Santhiyaa from Baba Ji - I can confirm that Baba Ji is not calling himself anything not jathedar not baba ji - he has the utmost humility. I however respect him immensely and I have been blessed with having a chacha ji who is also a Mahakaal Baba Ji, who has taught me the respect which is due to a Farla Vala Singh. I urge my brothers on this forum not to speculate negatively about gursikhs like Baba Ji. I can pass any questions about nihang singh rehat onto Baba Ji when I meet them next for santhiyaa. As for the comment by proactive - well we all know that the Budha Dal was started by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji - with Baba Budha Sahib being the first Jathedar. Chalo - each to his opinion - the truth shines brightly in the eyes of every Nihang Singh you meet... Akaaaaaaaaal!

  45. I don't know. Grammar was important enough for the Guru's to add aunkars and siharis to denote grammar. As I said before (and some morons minused me for!!??), I think our people had a period where they were so busy fighting for survival that the learning of grammar was put (understandably) on a lower prioty than fighting skills. Plus as Sikhi got more and more popular, it was mainly uneducated, working type people that swelled the ranks (blacksmiths, sweepers, farmers, carpenters etc.) So there may have been a simplifying of teaching Gurmukhi to make this job easier for the mass of new recruits? According to Surjit Hans, the practice of using aunkars at the end of words to denote case largely disappears from manuscripts after 1750, which might be a manifestation of this simplifying? But grammar is important to Gurbani, as Prof. Sahib Singh proves.

  47. While reading Guru Granth Sahib Darphan by Prof. Sahib Singh Ji I was reading the introduction of Baba Farid Jee's Sloks I noticed some interesting facts that go again't what I have heard in katha done by Giani Thakur Singh and Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji on the sloks of Baba Farid Ji. Prof. Sahib Singh Writes that the Bani of Baba Farid Ji in Guru Granth Sahib Ji is of Baba Farid Jee the first, not Sheikh Brama, Sheikh Ibrahim. 2. Farid Jee got "Ghang Shakar" added to his name not because of the story we all know but that his life was sweet and people were attracted to him. 3. also another interesting note is in Prof Ji's book "Adi Birh Barai" My link that the Pothis' before complied by Guru Arjan Sahib Ji were not with Baba Mohan but with Guru Ji, Prof. Ji's says that each of the Guru give his writings to the next Guru.

  48. You're right. What we need to understand then is why the use of aunkars disappears after the 1750s, and then, why it appears as if Prof. Sahib Singh rediscovers lots of grammar rules that seem to have been largely forgotten by the early 20th century? So it seems (tentatively speaking) as if there was a simplification of Gurmukhi around 1750s, but this was not a complete loss of grammar understandings. Schools are mentioned teaching Gurmukhi grammar by Leitner in 1882, so it survived till the Sikh raj and even after. Some books describing the etymology of words in Sikh scripture seem to have existed according to the article linked to by BhagatBalmik: The question of why the grammar that was unveiled by Prof. Sahib Singh has come to be regarded as monumentally significant comes to the fore. Maybe his (no doubt western influenced) systematic approach to interpretation far exceeded previous attempts to 'decode' Gurbani with strict reference to grammar rules? That being said, when I read Macauliffe's earlier translation of Japji Sahib, it doesn't seem too different from the Professor's exposition? Maybe the Professor through his rigid systematic application made concrete, that which was only loosely understood after the mid 1700s (grammatically speaking)?? What you do you think?

  49. ~ Ideas to have your dream Gurdwara ~ Ok now that i got everyone's attention, i want to dedicate this thread for all the sangat to post their ideas how to run the gurdwara if you were the head, in other words, what things would you implement to run an dream gurdwara of you have perceived to be an perfect model of an gurdwara? I will start off with most important thing which is maharaj darbar. 1. Guru Maharaj darbar- a). Pehradars in maharaj darbar with either small soti or barcha to ensure proper respect is paid to maharaj. eg- men/womens chatting, kids running around and crying etc. I honestly beleive these pehradars should be paid or salaried to keep consistency in their daily duties. b). Make a small room for bibiya with cranky kids and have an audio input with glass facing the maharaj darbar so they can take laha too. c). Having an serious morning/afternoon/evening Gurmantar/Mool Mantar chanting with lights dimmed with body fully straight...chanting should be done in a way where shabad spontenous resonance is vibrating all around maharaj darbar... i am not a fan of high speed simran - sorry. d). Golak for maya should be downstairs, only offering in maharaj darbar should be flowers/shastars/different types of incense for sachkhand darbar and fruit/anaj(wheat/rice/milk etc for langar). Reason for golak should be downstairs - who are we offer maya infront to maharaj..we are beggers..we should fullfill our daswanad in galok downstairs in the langar hall. e) Sachkhand room is already perfect in most gurdwaras, just small additions nishani of royalty for maharaj i.e- diamond malas, shastars in miyan with gurbani written on it e). There should be criteria (course on sikh theology/sikh mysticism/sikh history/gurbani) to be an Kathavachak/Kirtanis/Dhadivaar and after passing the course, they should be paid to overcome poltics within kathavachak/kirtanis circle (how come i get less time, he get more time, how come he gets more charva and i don't). I am not suggesting they should get paid for all of it..if kathavachik/kirtanis/dhadivaars is doing duty for 2 hrs, he should be getting paid 1 and other one is form of seva which he needs to fullfill in maharaj darbar. f). All the politicans mps/vips should do their baashan(speeches) downstairs 2nd floor in seminar room/inter faith/conference room/presenation room. Maharaj Darbar should be only for patt/kirtan/katha/dhadi varans. Optional - Lotus is very symbolic. I always wondered about this, it will look extremely beautiful to have guru maharaj parkash on huge customized lotus flower made out of gulab tile. Even though i think it would be great idea, i m reluctant to share that idea with anyone in real life because they may think its beadi as it would replace palki sahib. i m bit confused on this, what you guys think? Does that break maryada in anyway? 2. Gurdwara Structure (addition to what's already there in gudwara) a) GYM in the last floor beside langar langar along with offices/guest rooms to stay. Activities like yoga, gym, kusti, dand bhataka, gatka can be held in the gym. b) Large hall dedicated to Sikh History/relics of maharaj ( Guru maharaj histories/Saints/Soldiers/Scholards contributions, sikh war history, sikhs in 20th century) all should be representated into pictorial form (sometimes picture have amazing effect on person than words because of beginners surti of this jev). This should be in 2nd floor along with seminar room/conference room/inter-faith room. c) Another large hall dedicated to sikh manuscripts (this hall should be at the same level at maharaj's darbar) as we are dealing with priceless sikh manuscripts (old and new), caligraphic items with gurbani written on it. d) Sikh Research Center(2nd floor), which should be sikh library along with computer lab for youth singhs to do research on gurmat, make presentations to present in either maharaj's darbar or seminar's darbar. e) Master room sizes room for classes for punjabi/turban typing in 2nd floor f) Gurdwara should be built with huge property surronding developements of garden, senior homes/ multiple permanent huge tents for family akhand patts/anand karaj- same protocol should be followed of main maharaj's darbar. g) Elevators should be there for elders 3. Langar Hall a) Golak should be there b) Perhadards should be there full time and should be paid. c) Main langar as in (afternoon and evening ) should be distrubted after the sampati and ardas with mool mantar patt and jaikara followed by it. d) Small snacks - samosas, pokariaies, sweets, cold drinks can be vartah all the time to keep maintaing 24/7 concept of langar. d) Everyone in langar hall contribute to the seva first to organize langar for sangat prior to sampati. e) Mid size rooms near langar for people who like to yap away. f) Everyone should be allowed to do seva of langar monaie/amritdhari alike together to like we are already doing. 4. Gurdwara committe structure a) Committe members should be all keshadhar/amritdhari (can follow samparda/jatha maryada but should advocate panthic maryada when speaking to sangat), and should be part of panj pyares appointed by sri akaal takth sahib jathedar(may be too far fetched) with meeting of other takth sahiban and samparda's. b) Gurdwara Committe should have web centeralized database to report to Sri Akaal takth sahib as form of communciation and providing additional funding and this should be also used to acknowledge and enforcing the edicts and hakumnamas. c) Gurdwara committe should have khajan ji (which they already have) but also should have another body to do audits and oversee the fianicies d) Gurdwara committe should have army of Public relations/Media relations singhs/singhanis..this is extermely important from holding seminars to presentations to speaking to media to holding inter faith sessions. e.) All the gurdwara committe members and sevadards should be paid in a sense not salaried but percentage of full gurdwara revenue per year. This decision should be carefully made by jathedards of five takth sahiban we have. f) Gurdwara committe members should be transparent as neera jal(crystal clear water) when it comes to year end income, mortages payments, cost, percentage going to their pocket to win confidence of the sangat. Please share your own ideas...!!!!
