Parkarma

I agree with AKJFOREVER Veerji.

Keeping things "light" is alright. But something like doing parkarma should not be mocked or used as a punch line. There have been many Gurmukhs past and present that do Parkarma of Guru Sahib.

Darbar Sahib is designed so that all who enter must first do Parkarma of Guru Sahib...

I am surprised to see the mocking going on in this thread.  Any action we do to show respect to Guru Sahib can not be analyzed and made fun of.  Just because you don't do it doesn't make it wrong.  If you are mocking taking Parkarmas then why not say that all Sikh weddings are joke as well.  If you don't understand something or if you don't follow it, don't mock it.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh,

veerji, i hope you know that this thread was not started to mock anyone, but it was truely asked for gaining information. I hope no one was offended by nething said here.

I have learned a lot and would like to ask if the story about guru Nanak dev ji is true? also, can anyone post the tuks that speak of parkarma?

One of the reasons for parkarma is that it brings you in close infinity to Guru Ji. When one mutha teks its not long enough to do darshan and by doing parkarma an extra few minutes are shared nearer to SGGS JI and also it is respectful.

Also when one mutha teks the purpose is to ask for blessing to wash away our bad karma. So we are doning a karma when mutha tekna. When we do PAR KARMA we are asking for higher blessings and by going in a circular motion indicates we are asking for our dirt to be removed attached during the previous life circles.

why does the moon circle the earth and theplanets circle the sun? Its creating an energy by flowing in the circular direction. Likewise when we do Parkarma energy is created which bonds us to Guru JI , just like the moon bonds the earth and the planets to the sun.

As for starting from the left or right we should follow from the left as that appears to be the long standing practice and one assumes is right. If some when the other way imagine the collisions! and that would become disrespectful.

one question that's always been on my mind is if parkarma existed in the times of our human-form gurus.... i always thought it to sound somewhat peculiar that since anyone can come to a gurdwara from anybackground, it would present one extremely serious secuirty risk if we were allowing anyone to circle around guruji like that....

unless there was panj singh around Guruji or something..

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh

another quick question:

Most people when doing parkarma go to the left of Guru ji and go around... is it a must to do it this way? or is it ok to go to the right of Guru ji aswell, as i have seen this being done and was a little confused....

Fateh,

To understand why we circumambulate around Guru Ji on the left one must first understand why we go around them at all.

A Guru ka Sikh is one who places everything of his before the Guru, including his "muth", ie. thinking/reasoning. We mutha taik not simply as a show of respect or for the guru to 'wash away' our evil deeds, as christians do during confession, or hindus bow before the idols. We bow because we are saying, "O Merciful Guru, i am relinquishing my own muth so that you can bless me and infuse me with ur own muth, i.e. Gurmat or Guru ki muth. I want every decision of my life to me made based on your reasoning and logic because you are perfect and incapable of making a mistake, so i bow before you that you will bless me with this gift of gurmat."

Similarly, when we do parkarma (which by the way should only be done during lavaan, and all other times mutha taik) it is an extension of the same concept. As some other veers have highlighted, it is to say that we are making a comitment that this marriage of ours, has become an anand karaj only because you, the Guru, are present. Just as we are taking steps around you, keeping you at the center of this journey similarly every single step we take in life together as husband and wife, we will do so based on the teachings of Gurmat. You are the center, the foudnation of our life. ANd the parkarma with the Guru in the center is a open declaration of this.

And the reason we walk on teh left side is that it is merely a show of respect. In Indian culture, if anyone was to be shown a high level of respect, then that person would be seated to their right. It showed everyoen that this person on my right is osomeone i highly resepct, it was sign of sutkaar. And that is where walking on the left with the Guru to our right at all times originated. And with time it has become the norm.

Hope this helps

  • 2 weeks later...

The reason most people go from left to right, is because traditionally the respect Person is always kept on your right. So the queen will sit on the left of the king, so we keep Guroo Saahib on our right out of respect.

The reason nihangs and others go from right to left, is so that they do not come between Guroo Saahib and their Shastar. Out of respect to both they are saying the shastar belongs to the Guroo so who am i to come between them.

Hope this helps. At the end of the day Parkarma should be done, whichever way. At least have full Darshan of Maharaj!

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
