its a hindu superstitious thing. And in the uk alot of sikhs practice it, they shudnt if they wanna call themselves sikh. Guru nanak ji rejected the black thread that the brahmin tried putting around his neck stating that the thread cannot make a person good. DO not put blind faith in meaningless threads on your body.

Many sikhs argue that they do it because they want to show their sisters that they are there to protect them.

I ask them this: when u allow a thread to be placed around your wrist and give your sister money u say it symbolises that u will protect her from harm. But what if the thread breaks? will that mean that u will not protect her if she is gettin raped?? Sikhs protect their sisters from harm regardless of a silly thread around wrists. its a pity many sikhs still think its a part of sikhi.

sat sri akaal

We wear a kirpan for this purpose and we protect{or are supposed to} all people that are in need and not just women.

:D why people want to tear every thing that has background of hindu history ?????

Because anything hindu isnt Sikh. :TH: Why would GuruJi say dont wear a thread that is worn like a gaatra but you can wear one around your wrist? rolleyes.gif

Just wanted to remind u lot (yet AGAIN) it is not a hindu nor a sikh thing.

its strictly CULTURAL - originated from Rajastan.. Do your research!!!

Cultural or not we dont need a dumb piece of thread on us to have us protect the person which it is for. wacko.gifwacko.gifwacko.gif Why do Sikhs like mixing up with stupid hindu crap ? grin.gif

Whatever it is .....it directly contradicts sikhi and instead leads to these dhaage taveet things which we are abstained from putting faith in. let's stop acting being too open minded and be practical and stay away from meaningless and useless rituals which are forbidden...is there any room for debate on such issues??

I was always told that Guru Nanak Dev Ji's sister used to tie a Rakhri on him and that it is just a symbol of love, I have even seen a picture depicting this scene...but to be honest I am all for the idea of dropping Rakhri, I'll get to save my £5 :D and plus it starts smelling when it gets wet and it doesnt come off unless you cut it.

yeah, people makes pics promoting manmat. I have seen a RSS pic of Guru Nanak Dev ji with some hindu Gods also as well as Guru Gobind Singh Ji with his beard trimmed.

Get over the pics. They are not accurate. Sikhs don't believe in pictures. Pictures, idols, two sides of the same coin.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji refused to wear the janeoo but would wear a rakhri? One thread over another? If Guru Sahib believed in the power of the rakhri thread and what it symbolized then why not the janeoo? These hypocritical practices make sikhi seem like the undefined, confused hindu sect that some people want it to be...

peace.

Rightly said...u can see all type of false pics. Guru nanak dev ji wearing janeu, guru nanak devji getting married in hindu way, baba banda singh bahadur wearing topi not dastaar e.t.c......there are all kind of false pictures and stories being published in india just to change mentality of sikhs and bring them into hindu fold....just like u saw a pic and believed without questioning ....now it's up to us to sense true intentions of these people and defeat them

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
