why saints use 108?

In olden times (and I guess today too), Brahmins would brag about their textual reading by adding numbers before Vedas to signify how many Vedas they had read. So Trivedi would mean that that Brahmin had read 3 Vedas. After years of dueling each other, the numbers increased into the hundreds so their names took on 108 Vedi (Veda representing religious books, not just the 4 Hindu Vedas.

sooner or later we are going to start seeing fake sants with names like

Ik-so-atth Shri Sant Sahib Baba Singh Sant Sahib Bhai Baba Doctor Gyaani Sant Brahmgyaani Shri Sant Singh Sahib Baba Bhai Yogi Raagi Baba Sant <FAKE SANTS NAME> Singh Jee, PhD, MD, SDO, BA, MA, DDS............

this could go on and on.. hahhaa..

hmm, im not implying anything but has anyone seen what "American sikhs" call yogi jee? "Shri Singh Sahib Jee Yogi Bhajan Singh Jee" its longer than a lot of "sants" names.

I think all Chardi Kala bharam gyani singhs/kaurs should have one simple name with two words and if sangat wants to respect em.. they can put ji at end to their name.. like :

There are in total 108 Hindu Purans. Purans are basically Sakhis about Hindu Gods of the Trinity (Vishnu, Brahma, ShivJee) and Pantheon(The Devi/Devtas), there are also a number of story about great kings such as Dhru, Prahlaad and Rishis such as Vyaas, and Bhrigu, or even about great warriors such as Parshuram. All of these stories are contained in the Purans. Infact even Chandi Dhi Vaar is a story translated from one of the Purans. Basically the Purans are to the Hindus what the Janam Sakhis are to the Sikhs.

In olden days when learned Pandits with high intellect would have titles like ChathurVedi i.e. one who has mastered all 4 vedic texts, and 108 which would signify one mastery of sacred scriptures. So basically these titles were for really learned men. But now a days we see in Punjab uneducated fake Sants who have not even passed grade 10 have titles such as 108, as if they have a lot of education. Most of these fake Sants do not even know what 108 means, but still they use 108 in there names.
