In my view i dont think that sikh families should sell toxins like that because its sending mix messages to people.

You disagree with eating meat and alchohol but you sell it.

When you sell something you are allowing people to have to so in a way your condoning it which i doubt is the message you wanna send out.

Ye okie Business is buisness but you should be preaching to people about not doing stuff like drinkin n smokin not selling it n suppling it!!!

guru ji said that if its the only way you survive then yes. But honetly r u tellin me dat you cant buy n ell anything else other then ciggz n drinks 2 survive!

Gurpreet

I never condoned it preaching one thing and practising something else.

What I am saying is that this is how a lot of today's Sikh thinks regardless whether they are Amritdari or not.

Most of these people are hypocrites, they don't believe in Waheguru, they believe in money.

If these kind people run our gurdwaras, commiting all manners of paap within the gurudwara, do you really think that they care about what they do outside the gurdwara?

Okay ...I have few questions:

Is it okay to work in a restaurant who serves meat?

Is it okay to be owner of that restaurant?

Is it okay to work for a government who build bombs to kill innocents?

Also, Jains use to think about these issues a lot therefore they are all in very safe profession, trading.

Also, is it okay to buy stuff from those who use that money to promote anti-sikhi activities?

In my view you can only do what your conscience lets you. At some point your conscience will question what you do. My dad is a shop fitter and never had any issues doing doing off licence or butchers or take aways. But one day his conscience kicked in and as a Sikh he no longer felt right about accepting those kind of jobs. At first he lost a lot of trade but with Maharaj’s kirpa he got a contract with a photo/copy shop franchise which compensated for all the income we thought he lost.

normally i dont like to tell people what to do, and let them make their choices etc, but i have quite a stern veiw on this one......

my family are in this trade and we are desperatley trying to get out of it, it is seriously not good for your gursikhi jeevan, i would never recommened selling of alcohol or tobaco to anyone, and my veiw used to be very different and i am glad i learnt about sikhi,

but if u want to make the right choice trust me , stay away from it,

the money u make will never bring sukh to your family, i know its easy for me to say if the family is desperate, but after you spends years n years regretting it, and you get trapped into it and its very hard to get out of.....................................

God will help you , ardas is important, there are many ways to work , there are other types of shops which bring in more profit than alcohol ones, but i have got to say, this is possible the worst things a gursikh can do, it wud be a step backwards away from the guru.

I know about this first hand, and also member of my family also, this is not the KIRTAT Guru Nanak Dev Ji talked about, many ppl say it is kirat, but the nature of the work means it is not kirat, and as a sikh we must serve the world, for its bhalla, and in no way contribute to ppls manmat ways

Do you think the great Gursikhs like Baba Deep Singh, Bhai Mani Singh, Bhai Taru Singh etc would have sold booze, ciggis and porno mags inorder to survive?

What happened to "sir jaavay ta jaavay, meri sikhi sidhak na jaavay"?

Wasnt Bhagat Tarlochan a butcher? surley if Guruji decided to include his Bani itno Guru Sahib, then we should learn from this. If the person has to make a living let it be as long as they themeselves do not drink or smoke it should be fine

but then when he got the Gurus Darshan/ amrit didnt he stop?

sajan thag was a cannibal ,but stopped after being enlightened

and many many more

doesnt mean we can do the same, but it does mean we can be forgiven if we change our ways and realise,

also these things add to karam in whteva way we get involved, the law of karma is very fair, and we get what we deserve according to the actions we take.everyones on their own journey, we gotta make the right choices

Your conscience is still your's. Your peers, environment and other factors contributes to your conscience. It not something God given, as it vary from individual to indivdual. Right?

Rightly said. That's why sometimes it can take an incident or something someone said to you to rock your conscience. But once rocked, it can give you some serious sleepless nights and make you very uncomfortable.

I personally choose my working contracts very carefully and with Maharajs blessings have avoided having any direct working relationship with the alcohol, tabbacco, meat, adult entertainment etc industries. Yes, I indirectly contribute to these industries by shopping at large retail outlets. But with the budhi we have been given we can at least make gurmat related decesions as best as we can and minimise our input in these non-Gurmat activities.

The old saying goes that those "Sikhs who drink or sell alcohol might as well drink or sell the blood of the shaheeds". I once heard this from a parcharak nn the Gurdwara stage.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
