A Sister's fight for Kirpaan

Not sure what the law is in canada but, before 9/11 even the British Aviation Authorities allowed a 3 inch shri sahib. Legislation permitted it, but many news law have come out restricting weapons. At the end of the day, the issue is not just the country you leave from but also the country that you are flying to.

We have guru maharaj ji at home, so before I fly anywhere, I usually do ardaas and take of my shri sahib at home and pack it in my main luggage with respect. I don't eat anything until I have done ardaas and I have my Shri Sahib back. It may be wrong to take it off willingly but I have done this because the authorities will take your shri sahib and some say you will get it on the other end, but this is not guaranteed...guru sahib only knows if their hands are clean or whether the will treat guru ji's shaster with respect. I prefer to know that my shaster is safe...

Last year, when I was flying out of LA, I had a small 2 inch shri sahib on me (just for the flight). The authorities told me I had to check it in. All my luggage had already been taken. I did ardaas and put the shri sahib in one of my personal bags and this had to be escorted onto the plane. With guru ji's grace I managed to get it back on the otherside!

Religion has deteriorated over the years and religious values are not appreciated..plus, with 9/11 religion has been given a bad name and Sikhism is one of the religions that is obvious from appearance. I guess, a lot of people regard this as a threat and see all religious people as potential terrorists. Its that old argument, 'one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist'.

The best

way to fly with your shri sahib on is to be flying the plane your self! :)

bhul chuk maaf!

The best

WJKK, WJKF:

It is very unfortunate that Western Governments cannot look past the physical appearance of our Kirpans and recognize the importance and symbolic meaning of them.

With that said, in a post 9/11 world, it is virtually impossible to make any inroads on this issue for the indefinite future. Here in the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is adamant that under no circumstances will amritdhari Sikhs be allowed to wear their kirpans, regardless of size. Their number one priority is to ensure the safety of airline passengers, and they will not make any exceptions for anyone no matter what. It has been reported that necklace type kirpans that are the size of your pinky are allowed, but even then I have heard that some Sikhs have been told to leave them behind by security officials.

The right to wear the kirpan goes well beyond airports. It also applies when Sikhs go to courts, embassies, and other government offices throughout the world. There have been several court cases in the US that have been successfully litigated that have allowed Sikhs to wear kirpans in schools and on the job. Beyond that, the law is less clear. For a list of applicable cases and additonal info please go here:

My advice for those of you who are looking to travel, is to do ardaas, place your kirpan in your checked luggage, and then upon arriving at your destination, remove the kirpan and do ardaas again. Whether you choose to drink or eat anything in between that time is in my opinion, a personal choice (after all, those US-India journeys can take up to 23 hours!). ohmy.gif

Meanwhile, we should continue to educate our elected officials and those responsible for overseeing airline security about this issue. I know that SMART and the Sikh Coalition have been working on this for some time, and if you feel that you have been wrongfully discriminated against in any way shape or form, please do not hesitate to contact them.

Finally, here is a link to SMART’s Sikh passenger bill of rights. Anyone who is traveling to or from the United States should print this out before embarking on his or her journey.

Excellent post Cali Singh ^_^

With respect to removing your kirpan and placing it in your carry on luggage, I agree with that. It makes sense to do so especially after strict post 9/11 laws.

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Waheguru jio!

I guess it all comes down to sharda what my veer khalsa ji was talkin about.... its how much love you have for your guru ji ...

Guru ji knows how much love you have for him within. Let me put it this way...

Guru ji wants us to be physically active.. with no food in you expecially on the long plane ride or watever... u will not be able to concentrate on anythin expecially ur nitnem and simran. So i do think its a ritual...

Its the love that counts for your guru. Guru ji understands everythin.. not what some ppl just think ... i can say da same that a maha gursikh has told me no u should eat... dont take me wrong jio, all gursikhs are maha... no doubt... but i guess it all comes down to what YOU think.

Its not that like if you eat... guru ji will not except u ... think about it ...

My .68 rupees (i think .. approx 2 cents)

bhul chuk maph!

if your punj pyaray i.e. guru sahib hukam you, is it still a ritual?

jo gur kahay soe bhul mano, har har katha niralie

my. $.02

bhul chuk maf
