I don't know where you get that it's a part of everyday life in Punjab. Any Singh smoking a cigarette even in a place like Ludhiana would get a bollocking from other Singhs. I've never seen a Singh smoke in Punjab and I usually visit India every year. Alcohol yes but smoking no.
