India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has vowed to take "whatever measures are necessary" to track down those responsible for the Mumbai attacks.

He said the perpetrators were based "outside the country" and India would not tolerate "neighbours" who provide a haven to militants targeting it.

Gunmen targeted at least seven sites in Mumbai late on Wednesday, killing at least 101 people and injuring 300.

At one hotel, dozens of people are said to remain trapped or held hostage.

A home ministry official said between 20 and 30 people at the Oberoi-Trident might still be hostages, while the owners said some 200 people were trapped inside.

Police earlier said hostages had been freed from another luxury hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace, but explosions and gunfire were still being heard by witnesses outside.

In other developments:

* A stand-off continues at a Jewish centre, where an Israeli rabbi and his family are believed to have been taken hostage, and one militant reportedly phoned local TV offering to negotiate over the release of hostages

* The Indian navy said it was searching ships off the west coast following reports that gunmen had arrived in Mumbai by boat

* The German foreign ministry said one of its nationals had died in the attacks; a Japanese and an Italian are also among the dead

Sky news just read out an email that the terrorists apparently sent to a news channel. Some key things that were in it:

-Muslims want their stolen land back

-They have not been treated equally since 1947

-Something to do with Kashmir

-Call themselves Deckun Mujahiddin (or something). Deckun is in Southern India.

Zee TV news just reported that one of the terrorists 'accidently dropped' his phone out of a hotel window whilst throwing a hand grenade. All of the mobiles call history was to Karachi, Pakistan.

Hanji its Deccan. They claim to be Hyderabadi, but now the finger is as usual turned towards Pakistan, with substantial evidences that all 26 of them were from Karachi. For example, the grenade that didn't go off at the CTS railway station has been found to belong to the Pakistani army. The boat in which these guys came has newspapers printed in Karachi, and 1 of them dropped his cell phone while trying to throw a grenade. The phone has incoming and outgoing calls from Pakistan.

Over 130 innocents dead

Over 325 innocents injured

Out of 26, 10 terrorists arrested, several others killed, few injured and continue firing and throwing grenades.
