This Sikhnet thread's quite amusing as well as astonishing. I find it really strange how some Singhs are so worried about keeping an open dara. I did not realise the various techniques developed for setting a dara....

i dont get thgis. i read the first line. u r going to go to the same hair dresser who cut hair to get ur dhara curled :umm:

i just leave it free comb it, but its not long at the momenttouch of oil may be but thats rare. i dont get it. :e:

on the other hand my cuzn gets a gapa of gel and slps it on, Why? no idea.

The whole process of curling takes about 2-3 hours. But once it is done you dont have to worry about 2-3 months. Then you just have to comb your beard and tie a cloth (thata) for few minutes to get it set or alternatively, if you are in very hurry then you can hair drier your beard over the thata and in 2 minutes it will be all set..... Really hard to maintain sikhism in foreign countries.... Don't feel dejected......but get ready to face lots of problems (discrimination for good jobs, marraiges etc etc) associated with maintaining sikh image....anyway

why would you curl your beard???????? that is the dumbest thing i

have heard besides gelling your beard. why waste so much time in doing that? and i have never heard of anyone drying their beard with a hair dryer.....

if your a real sikh you wouldn't curl your beard right? :T:

hehe...i knew a singh who used to curl his beard...

it was soo funny...cuz i always thought it was natural and was mesmerized by the way it looked....

but then i saw his drivers' license and it wasn't a curly beard...so then i got suspicious...

and then one time i went to his house and it was evening time and the bro had curlers in his beard....

i laughed so hard...i think i may have busted a gut...hehe........

oh well....to each his own...... i don't see anything "wrong" with it...but it's just soooooo freaking funnny....

i wish more people curled their beards....i'd be laughing 24/7....truly entertaining stuff.....

theresbeen a lot of debate about this on akj.org...

one post that stands out in my mind (someone asked the difference between gel and oil):

Oil provides nourishment for hair as it dries out when we wash it with shampoo's. Gel does no such thing. Oil keeps our hair from snapping when we do kangha and provides strength. Gel is only employed for fashion purposes. We use natural edible oils (almond oil etc.) for our kes in order to use safe and functional substance for maintaining our Vaheguru given kes. Gel is not edible (at least I don't think it is, I would never try it myself), and full of chemicals and other synthetic substances which act as a glue and perhaps cause more breakages/damages of the kes.

Is it not fashion to tie up your dhari for no apparent reason at all? For work one may need to do a knot at the bottom, but applying gel is not justified in any sense. Some apply gel to the sides of their dhari so it doesn't puff out at the sides....the question arises: who are you trying to make your Vaheguru-given limb (kes-dharee) good for?

Singhs looks wicked with their dhaaria open. It's the mane of a lion and it makes singhs look fierce!

Why mess with it?
