GURUDWARA RULES NEED TO BE ENFORCED.

Recommended Posts

Sat Sri Akal:

Just a cautionary story. A family friend told us this story from a Gurudwara. He was sitting in the sangat and trying to listen to Kirtan ..........

.....................to if they want to chat.

Thnx for sharing the experience.I have noticed one thing in gurudwara Sahib that people DONOT feel the presense of SGGS ji.They just walk around yelling and DONOT see SGGS ji as living Guru.

Is it appropriate for the langar for men and women to be seperated?

noonespecial ji:

That is one of the stupidest things i have heard a gurdwara is doing! (my anger is directed at ppl who do this, not at you noonespecial ji) What is the point in segregating langar if it's the same? was it Guru Amar Das ji who started the idea of langar? if he eliminated the idea of caste segregation in langar then who is the dumb fool who thinks we need to be segregated by gender? :D That is so freakin stupid, does this still go on at this gurdwara you speak of? has any SIKH spoken to the committe ppls about this stupidity?

Vicky wrote:

How should we do this?? Most of the gurdwara managment ppls are not that easy going who will listen to guy like me  So how to take these steps?? any ideas.. shud i print them and hand it to them.. Or should i make a awareness flyer and put o

n the windshield of all gurdwara sahib visitors ? Any suggestions ??

you have a good point (and everyone else who said the same too). management ppls don't listen cuz they wanna let the majority do whatever they are doing cuz the management ppls don't wanna lose their kursi.

i think this is a delicate issue :T: . If we are goin to put up flyers then we have to do it in all the gurdwaras in our area not just one. secondly, language used has to be VERY VERY NICE so ppl are not outraged and feel like they are being dissed by some college students :D . we must speak with committee ppls and get their opinion what they think about it. someone has to bring it up in the committee meetings so they have discussion on it. (they'll probably end up splittin into 2 parties :umm: )

i think we need to make a universal flyer with the ideas posted by Surrey Singh ji. then that flyer can be posted on web and printed by anyone who wants to put it up/distribute it.

rest i forgot what i was gonna say :(

GuruFatehJi.

Great post. I will be publishing it in a local magazine to which I am an editor to. I'm sure there are basic things people are supposed to do and they take offence on it when they are corrected on it. I don't feel sorry for such people and say and do what I have to.

Once at the Gurudwara, I was listening keenly to Dya Singh's Diwan and these so-called Gurudwara leaders were yapping away. I was seated right behind them and they were spoiling my whole concentration. I could not keep quiet any longer (they had gone on and on for like an hour!) and I politely tapped on one gentleman's shoulder and told him that he was distrupting my concentration. This guy, an aging man with a white (trimmed) beard, gave me a nasty look and said, 'Go sit somewhere else!' I couldn't believe my ears. I got up and sat myself infront of them and even then, they were yapping like some bored puppies. They ruined my whole evening.

So, I would publish the wonderful post of this thread and let people complain as they like. Truth must be told.

Thank you for the great post.

Blessings.

I agree with the original post. I have myself encountered a situation when some girls were talking in a keertan program and did not stop even when I gave them angry looks. Finally, at the end of a shabad, I asked them if they could go outside to talk because their talk is disturbing other people. They listened and probably went out or kept quiet after that.

In another similar incident, two bhenji's were talking and when i told them to stop or go outside for their talk, as this is a beadbi. They had courage to say that they were talking about seva for Gurudwara only :umm: @

Anyways, we all should do prachaar and post awareness flyers atleast.

Thank you all so much for your responses...some great advice. I think everyone of us should make it an ABSOLUTE PRIORITY to speak up and do something. If anyone is talking in the Darbar, just go upto them and tell them to be quiet (nicely). Who cares if people get mad?...whos more important: some old guy telling his buddy about his bus ride to the Gurudwara, or Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?...a couple of us have talked recently about doing something, and are going to approach the commitee for a meeting.

Immortality: i am very happy to hear that you do Seva, and i am not being bias to all little kids. There are many who keep the rules strictly. But for example, last night at the Gurudwara i saw a kid who kept pouring daal, keer etc...only for his parents, and then he sat down infront of his have-finished langar! He just got up and started to get some Langar for his parents, while he was eating, without washing his hands! Who's fault is this? I blame the parents for not caring about Langar Maryada.

And about the person who almost got into a fight...that happened to me too when i asked the father of a girl serving Langar to put a ramal on her head. He goes, "No, i'm not gonna do it, you guys are too katar, if you want to go outside then lets go"...but later he began to understand when i explained to him that if we don't teach our kids the rules, who will? They are the future, and we must teach them proper Maryada, or else who knows what will happen in the future. Basically...even if someone yells, keep doing your part, don't stop enforcing Maryada. Lets all

take charge in these affairs, because when people get relaxed in following rules, they slowly become more and more relaxed, who knows what will be termed 'acceptable' in the future. Again thank you all for the advice!

i thought i'd add my two cents....

1. Signs are great!...have seen them up in a couple of gurdwaras...they actually work....

2. have a kirtan tape playing in the langar hall after samapti so that everyone eating and serving can stay tuned into gurbani...

3. get the kids to do simran in the langar hall...could have them standing in the langar hall or even while serving....also seen this happen a couple of times...works great....pretty soon everyone in the langar hall is reciting piyaraa gurmantar : waheguru

4...the closed seva idea.....i have only seen this in one place...which is at a gurdwara in india....the daal and sabjis are usually just cooked by amritdhari singhs and not just amritdhari singhs... these sevadaaars spend their whole time at this gurdwara looking after not just langar but the whole upkeep....some might say this is discrimination...but people have to understand that at this gurdwara during the regular ten day samagams they have three times a year there is on average 8 to 10 thousand sangatees attending...so they are doing this more for the sake of the sangat, nothing more to it than that...and even then..it's not really closed seva....they just have the kitchen out of sight from most of the sangat...so most people don't even venture their...but all other sevas are done right out in the open where anyone can participate and are encouraged to participate...

5... the separate langar...i have also seen this happen at samagams...this is done more out of necessisty than anything else...i've been to samagams where there is enourmous amounts of sangat..so they have two langar hal

ls to accomodate all the sangat...and the easiest way to logistically do things is say one for the veers and one for the bhens....nothing to get worked up about that... and when the sangat is less everyone just uses the same langar hall...

it's important to recognize that some things that take place in gurdwaras such as separate langar halls or certain people making langar isn't an issue about separation, discrimination or amritdharis vs. nonamritdharis....sometimes ...most of the time it's just a matter logistics...and whats easier to do...

for example... at the gurdwara mentioned above in india, they have separate langar halls for the veers and bhens...the reason for this is when you have 10 thousand people at a samagam...and have two langar halls...and since it is a gurdwara anyone can come to the samagam...you don't know who's coming and what intentions everyone has...the separate langar halls keep things easy to manage as well as keep discipline....again...when there is less sangat, even at this gurdwara, everyone sits together in one langar hall....

JSS..

I understand your point about seperate langar halls if the Sangat is massive. That's not the issue. Even in ONE langar hall the men and women usually end up sitting seperately.

The question is about where there is ONE langar hall and the langar being DISTRIBUTED is seperated. So even if you pick up a 'baltee' from the 'girls' table, you are told to put it back and pick one from the 'guys' table if you want to serve the men.

...is there something wrong with that?

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
