Do you light toof, Jot? Believe in superstitions? Believe in un-scientific miracles associated with people of a religion? Omens?

Add common vamms within our people lets discuss them.

fordcapri, I think you missed an opportunity to discuss actual vehims (like donating maha di dal on certain days, not washing your hair on certain days, etc.) when you mixed actual vehims with genuine Sikh practices like jot, etc.

If you had worded your opening better, probably everybody on this board (except those who may go to Pundits) would have agreed with you. But people aren't going to let you denigrated Sikh practices under cover of calling them vehims.

As it’s an open debate on what people think is vaam or not, people are just listing vaam they know of.

Here are some more:

People who take water from the Gurdwara as they think it hears Gurbani, nut water has no ears or no senses to listen. (water worship)

Fish in the Sarorvar, it been planted in the water by someone, some think they have appeared there due to miracle.

I have only heard this one once, people giving shirts and clothes to Bhais after a funeral as they think it will reach the loved one who has passed away.

People touching elderly person feet, this is similar to idol worship.

heres a well known Sakki of Guru Nanak Jee, when he denounced vaam

A New Way of Teaching

Once Guru Nanak went to Hardwar. Hardwar is town in India. It is on the bank of river Ganges and is a sacred place for Hindus There was a big fair. Many people were bathing in the river They were splashing water towards the rising sun. They thought that their forefathers lived on the sun.

Guru Nanak went into the river too. He began to splash water to the other side. This was something strange for the people. They gathered round him and thought that he was a fool. The people laughed at him and asked, "Are you mad? Why are you splashing water towards the West when all the other people are throwing it towards the East?"

The Guru did not listen to them. He went on splashing the water.

An old man came to the Guru angrily. He held the Guru by the arm and said, "Don't you know which side the water is to be thrown?"

The Guru smiled and asked, "May I know why all these people are throwing the water to that side?"

"Well, they are sending the water to their forefathers on the sun. So they are throwing the water towards the East," said the old man, "Only you are foolish enough to throw water towards the West."

"Do you know how far away their forefathers live?" asked the Guru.

"Millions of miles away on the sun," was the old man's reply.

"Well," said the Guru. "My farm is at Kartarpur in the West. It did not rain this year and my crops are thirsty. I am sending the water to my crops." Saying this, the Guru began to throw water again.

The people laughed at him and said, "Your farm is in the Punjab. How can this water reach there?"

"If my water cannot travel three hundred miles from here and reach my farm," said the Guru in surprise, "How can your water reach millions of miles to the Sun?"

The old man could not find any answer. Some of the people agreed with the Guru and they said, "He is right. It is really useless to throw water to the sun if it cannot reach there."

The people came to understand their ignorance They stopped throwing the water and listened to Guru Nanak. The Guru taught them the true way of life. He told them to serve living people and not think of the dead who have left us for ever.

Been sniffing petrol again?

Yes, there are vams, but most of the stuff you list is not 'vammi'.

The effect of sound on water: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtlhVgnWIIY&feature=player_embedded

There was also a BBC news article about this a few years ago.

Do yourself a favour, read some Gurbani instead of the Dail Mail and become a Sikh before criticising things you know nothing about.

This is not a reply to ford capri but to all...

There are things such as Maryada and tradition and we should be proud of following those instead of questioning them. Lot of other communities are prouf od their traditions. Why it has to be only Sikh community to raise shanka or questions about our old age traditions. Maybe our Guru Sahib jee gave us large amount of freedom to think and then the real test comes to see if the person made up his mind in a correct way or not.

If we start raising questions and then later start acting against our maryada, a day won't be far when we find no diffference between us and ludhiana missionaries sect. Whether its dhoop jot or washing harmandar sahib with milk, make up your mind saying that there are somethings that our mind should not take any concern and keep our self busy in progressing internal sikhi (read, listen and then follow guru granth sahib ji's teaching practically). After that maybe we will have enough kamai points to understand such old maryada or traditions.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
