At Delhi, Mata Sundari ji adopted a young boy whom she named Ajit Singh because of his resemblance to her own late son, Sahibzada Ajit Singh ji. After the passing away of Guru Gobind Singh ji at Nanded in October 1708, the Sikhs looked up to her for guidance. She appointed Bhai Mani Singh ji to manage the sacred shrines at Amritsar and also commissioned him to collect the writings of Guru Gobind Singh ji. She also issued under her own seal and authority hukamnamas to sangats. The hukamnamas since discovered and published bear dates between 12 October 1717 and 10 August 1730.

Mata Sundari ji was disappointed in her adopted son, Ajit Singh. Emperor Bahadur Shah treated him as the successor of Guru Gobind Singh ji, called him to his court and gave him a robe of honour in September 1710. This went to his head and he started living in style as a courtier. He grew arrogant and haughty even towards Mata Sundari who disowned him, and migrated to Mathura.

Ajit Singh was later convicted for murder and was put to death on 18 January 1725. Mata Sundari ji returned to live in Delhi where she, died in 1747. A memorial in her honour stands in the compound of Gurdwara Bala Sahib, New Delhi.

At the time of adoption Guru Gobind Singh Sahib G also refused.

So adoption might not b a gud idea!!!!!!

Plz forgive for any mistake

I think its admirable for someone to adopt, treat anothera child as our own. I think nawab kapur singh adopted jassa singh ahulwalia, he turned out great. Just cos mata ji adoped ajit singh and he turned out a wrongun blinded by maya he wasnt a one off. Some of the gurus own kids turned out wrong uns aswell. Also call me old fashioned but a child needs two parents.

Wow thanks for the history above.

Although to be fair, Guru Gobind Singh Ji probably objected to the adoption on the grounds of foreseeing the corrupt future of the kid to be adopted - not the general concept of adoption itself. Our Guru's were compassionate and loving beings. For a child not to be given a loving home whether his biological or adopted parents were to provide it, would be a bit harsh and portrays our Guru's in a harsh and unloving light - which I don't think they were.

Unfortunately punjabi culture still influences many people in the panth, so from that aspect you will be judged. There's nothing wrong according to Sikhi about adoption or IVF(maybe, if it was your husband) however as stated above a child needs both a mother and a father. Your child need's a father and a mother.

u'r rite.....a single no frm our GURU for adoption doesn't mean that he was against adoption.......there might have some other thought in our guru's mind

you are an amazing human being if you can take someones child and bring it up as your own. there are so many children in orphanages and stuff, who just dont get the start they need in life. from my experience, panjabis/sikhs are very reluctant to adopt, mainly owing to the caste of the child, and the very high probability that it was born out of wedlock. Plus if it was a girl( and they usually are in orphanages), then who would want the expense of the wedding in so many years time. So you can see at in india/panjab, why people are very reluctant to adopt.

I don't want to get married in the future but i do want to have a child one day.

What does Sikhi say about adoption and IVF treatment?

you know in adoption, you dont need a partner, but for ivf you are going to need a male, and would you want to have a child by someone you weren't married to? Marriage is v important if you want kids. If you are young, why are you worrying about it now for?

The widespread beleif in the society is that People don't want to adopt ,but a closer look will tell that situation is Opposite

http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/mp/2002/11/11/stories/2002111100250100.htm

"We received 300 applications this year, but only 190 babies came up for adoption,'' says Cicily Baby, Social Worker with Rajagiri-VCA.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of this there are widespread cases of baby stealing from hospitals in mumbai.Court has already directed many hospitals that

CCTv camera's should be installed.

vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

dear bhenji

to give some one love and shelter is what sikhi is about, to love the world as your family is so beautifull if more ppl come forward to adopt a child the world wud know what sikhs and sikhi is about.

Shaheed Bhai Harpinder Singh Goldy family adopted by Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana (beanta case) as their son and today he is ready to hang the hang mans noose.

If more ppl took in the shaheeds children today they might not have been prey to drugs and abuse.

what is more sweet than to give some child a new start in life and in a sikhi loving environment

go for it
