Devinder Singh Bhullar will hang: SC rejects mercy plea

Recommended Posts

The Supreme Court today rejected a plea by terror strike accused Devinderpal Singh Bhullar who sought to have his death sentence commuted to life on the grounds that there had been an inordinate delay in carrying out the sentence.

The Supreme Court bench only announced that the petition from Bhullar had been dismissed without giving the reasons for why it had been dismissed.

The bench had reserved its order on 19 April last year on the issue on a plea of Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) terrorist Devinderpal Singh Bhullar’s family which had filed a petition on his behalf pleading that his capital punishment be commuted to life imprisonment as there has been “inordinate” delay in deciding his mercy plea and he is not mentally sound.

It was submitted that prolonged incarceration of a death row convict awaiting his/her execution amounted to cruelty and violated the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

Bhullar was awarded death penalty for triggering a bomb blast in Delhi in September, 1993, here killing nine people. The target of the blast was allegedly India Youth Congress President Maninderjit Singh Bitta who managed to escape.

The Supreme Court had on 26 March, 2002, dismissed Bhullar’s appeal against the death sentence awarded by trial court and endorsed by the Delhi High Court.

He had filed a review petition which was also dismissed on 17 December, 2002. Bhullar had then moved a curative petition which too had been rejected by the apex court on March 12, 2003.

Bhullar, meanwhile, had filed a mercy petition before the President on 14 January, 2003. The President, after a lapse of over eight years, dismissed his mercy plea on 25 May in 2011.

Political leaders from across parties have supported the plea for clemency for Bhullar who has also claimed he is suffering from mental ailments as a result of his long imprisonment.

I agree , but its easy to say that when the rope is not around our necks (no offense). plus we need to save this heera enough have died!!

Lets read the facts about Prof. Sahib's case: 1) Out of 133 witnesses, not even one has recognised Bhai Sahib. 2) The confession of Bhai has his 'Thumb print'. Note: He is well qualified to sign.

Easy to say when you are sitting on your comfy chair at home on a computer !!!!

Ask the family what they feel then i bet you wont be saying the same.

Why even ask for mercy. Kiss that rope and stick a finger up to the state. No bigger messege than that

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Bhullar-verdict-SGPC-reacts-strongly-to-SC-ruling-calls-it-murder-of-democracy/articleshow/19514593.cms

"In 1984 there was a provocation for the riot. Though the riot was not justifiable, it is well documented that many in Delhi Sikh community distributed sweets in the streets upon the news of Indra Gandhi's murder, before the riots started"

So if you distribute sweets , you should be burnt alive and females in the family raped with police watching guard ?

Dont know how some people can be so cold , I would never justify killing of any people just because they belong to a certain faith or celebrated death of a certain leader

The sweet distribution is only half truth. Yes this occurred but certainly not by Delhi Sikhs who were traditionally pro congress. This occurred in Punjab and in western countries by NRI Sikhs. And they too did it to get back at the Hindus who right after the attack on Darbar Sahib were the first ones to celebrate and distribute sweets in Punjab in front of the Sikhs! At the time the cities of Punjab were dominated by Hindus, while Sikhs were mainly in villages. So back then when Sikhs saw Hindus doing this it was like rubbing salt on the wound. When Indira Gandhi died, some Sikhs in Punjab emulated this behavior of the Hindus by distributing sweets. But again this did not occur in Delhi area where the Anti Sikh riots happened.

This is what my mom tells me. She said the Hindus in her neighborhood in Punjab distributed sweets after Operation Bluestar and they celebrated. So when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, my mom and her friends distributed sweets at her University.

Now, these comments on Ndtv are removed, the remaining comments on NDTV are - no liberty to terrorists etc. etc.
