Gurmeet Singh is one of the four prisoners recently released on parole for a period of 28 days with firm assurances from the Punjab authorities, that his permanent release would be secured, hopefully within the parole period, meaning he would not have to spend any further time behind bars.

However we announce with heavy hearts, that this morning Gurmeet Singh left his elderly mother and disabled sister at the family home, to face the prospect of returning to Burail Jail. In a highly charged atmosphere, our SOPW team offered support to the family and assured them that we stand shoulder to shoulder with them, as we have done up until now. Gurmeet Singh’s mother was unable to talk as she was so choked up with emotion, but she let us know how much she appreciated the unwavering support we have always provided to them.

It has been a rollercoaster ride for Gurmeet Singh; from the ecstatic feeling of being reunited with his family after eighteen years, to returning home for the first time since he lost his father, to the heartbreaking moment this morning when he had to say goodbye to the short lived freedom he had tasted. Each day of his parole he lived in the hope of freedom and what makes it more unbearable is that he has already spent more years in jail than were due. Each minute, day, week, month and year adds to the cruelty of the situation.

Upon his release on 25 December, SOPW hired a lawyer to apply for an extension to Gurmeet Singh’s parole period and application for bail. We have been given a date for the hearing from the High Court of 30 January 2014. We have also started the same process for the other two Burail Jail prisoners - Shamsher Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, whose parole period is due to end on 25 January and we are waiting to hear from the Court regarding a date for their hearing. We will inform the Sangat of the outcome when we receive any further news.

We would like to leave the Sangat with something to think about. Over the last couple of months, many promises have been made, many people have made a name for themselves, many photo’s have been taken and many Sikh’s emotions have been played with. However, none of the leaders, ruling parties, religious bodies or influential people have carried out their promises. When the tv camera’s and media people packed up and left Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali, our so called leaders returned to their own worlds where they neither hear, nor say, nor do.

SOPW would like to remind all those who turned up at the “Release Sikh Prisoners” hunger strike protest, that with great positions come great responsibilities. You play with the emotions of the very people who support you, the very people who elect you, the very people who you should serve and protect, in order to further your own position or to make financial gain. We all knew that the days of parole for these four Singhs were numbered and the return dates are near, we would like to ask “What steps did you actually take towards freeing these men, who have already paid a heavy price for the Sikh Nation?”

Is anyone actually surprised by this ?? Did anyone really think the Delhi establishment was going to permanently release these prisoners so easily ? They once agian just used time waste tactics until the situation with Bhai Gurbaksh Singh's hunger strike calmed down. They are counting on people forgetting about it ..

The whole movement started by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh was for PERMANENT release nothing less should be accepted, Badal even said at the time that the prisoners were only on "holiday" .

I admire SOPW efforts. Bhai Barbie Singh bains efforts are much appreciated and because of his unlawful arrest and his freedom revoked for no valid reason is the main reason why this organization exist.

Delhi/outsiders are maybe at fault but the main fault is of our own people and we don't realize that for the past several decades. Blaming top position or central will do no good unless you start cutting gardars in our community.

I totally agree with Waljinder Singh. Bhai Gurbax Singh was/is a very sincere and inspirational gurumukh. However, I have to say many of the hangers on who posed for pictures with him really have little concern for, justice, political prisoners or the Khalsa Panth. The Sant Samaj in particular are Badal's poodles and they will not do anything that he or the corrupt political class do not sanction. The reality is that our dharam is gulam; on the one hand we have the likes of K.P.S Gill, Sumedh Singh Saini, K.S Brar and Congress and BJP politicians who will gladly kill ordinary Guru Sikhs. And on the other we have the 1000's of Masands and Baba's - and I include those that claim to be Panthic - who say one thing but do another. Their true colours were recently exposed during the clashes at Patna Sahib - go against their command or desire and the serene sant quickly turns into a gunda. Look at what happens when any big baba passes away; even before the Baba has had his antam ardass the chelas begin to square up to each other and civil war ensues, each vying for the 'gadhi'. This is also why for every samparda, there are many factions and pretenders claiming to be the true custodians of the dynasty. And, like gangsters and criminal politicians, the baba's have their own personal militia's brandishing automatic weapons. Why if they are one with waheguru do they fear death? If they have such spiritual powers (Brahm Gian) why would anybody want to attack them? Of course the reality is that they fear attacks from the other gangster Baba's often over land and monetary disputes. Or in the case of Nihangs, they operate protection rackets.

Sant Jarnail Singh ji had very little time for these pakandhis. He was a man of ordinary people of al faiths and none. He was not interested in personal possessions or fame. His power was in his simple devotion to the pure teachings and example of our Guru's, which was to live a spiritual, frugal life but also to fight oppression. That is why the Masands, Baba's and Corrupt Akali Politicians conspired to kill him. The same forces, had the eye of the media not been there, that would have disposed of Bhai Gurbax Singh. Indeed, Bhai Gurbax Singh in his discourses at Ambh Sahib often referred to these fifth columnists in the Sangat - he would say there are peole here who have come to support me but there are also those that want to kill him.

They have little regard for Sikhi and all they can offer is ritualised practices - smagams to fill their coffers and keep the masses from realising the true causes of their misery. Yes, most of their chelas are people suffering from various physical, mental or economic troubles. And instead of seeking out professional support, which they probably can't afford, they go for the cheap Baba version. And as far as economic problems are concerned, rather than gamble their money on the promises of some Baba's ardas (equivalent of a bookie), they should really be asking why they are in poverty? And the answer is simple, it is the system and not waheguru. It is the greed of the rulers and their resident baba's. And once this is realised, then it becomes obvious, the only solution is to create common cause with other poor people to overthrow the system. And we have many examples from the Gurus pointing us tpowards such a strategy. For example, read Rattan Singh Banghu who said "gareeb ka mooh, guru ki golak". The sakhi of Guru nanak Ji and Bhai Lalo provides another examination.

Dr Gurnam Singh (my real name and not some cowardly alias, which is often the trademark of the defenders of the pakandhi babas I refer to)

Dr Gurnam Singh ji Waheguru ji ka Khalsa

Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Bhai Sahib, I agree NINETY-NINE PERCENT with everything you have said. But please clarify the point. And make it a HUNDRED.

Are you suggesting a return to militancy??

Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Mohali, January 23
On completion of his 28-day parole period, Sikh detainee Gurmeet Singh returned to the Burail Model Jail, Chandigarh, this evening. An accused in the Beant Singh assassination case, he reached the jail at 3 pm. He was accompanied by his mother Surjit Kaur, sisters Manjit Kaur and Varinder Kaur and brother-in-law Bhupinder Singh.

Sikh activists Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, Harpal Singh Cheema, RP Singh and Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib met Gurmeet Singh outside the jail. The latter

stepped inside the jail in the presence of the AIG, prisons, Chandigarh, Balbir Singh Dhol, at 4.30 pm.

Talking to The Tribune, Gurmeet Singh said he wanted to return to the

mainstream. “I am looking forward to my premature release. Except for paying obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, I remained at my house in Patiala. I did not violate any terms of the parole,” he said.

Gurmeet Singh’s mother said the family was hopeful of his premature release. Dhol said they would first seek a report on Gurmeet Singh’s conduct during parole from the District Magistrate, Patiala. The report would be sent by the IG, Prisons, Chandigarh, to the Governor. If the report is positive, we will certainly ask for his premature release”, he said.

Gurmeet Singh was released on parole on December 25, 2013, for the first time since his conviction in 2007.
