Haryana announces separate Sikh panel for its Gurdwaras

IANS | Chandigarh July 6, 2014 Last Updated at 16:18 IST

Bowing to the demand of Sikh leadership from the state, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Sunday announced that a separate Sikh body would be set up to run the affairs of gurdwaras (Sikh shrines) in Haryana.

The announcement, which was being speculated on for the past few days, was formally made by Hooda at a Sikh conference in Haryana's Kaithal town, 140 km from here, Sunday. It was greeted by a thunderous applause by the gathering.

The move was strongly opposed by the Amritsar-based Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, which currently controls gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, which dominates the SGPC, also opposed the Haryana move and had even sought the Centre's intervention in the matter.

The Haryana government is likely to bring a legislation in the forthcoming assembly session next week to enable the creation of a new Sikh body to manage gurdwaras and Sikh affairs in Haryana.

Once the new law is passed, nearly 72 gurdwaras in Haryana will go out of the control of the SGPC.

What right does huda have to announce this committee?

Is he even a Sikh?

A little surprised they are trying to do it under a BJP govt, as the Akalis are part of this govt as well.

Still it should open badals eyes a little. Hopefully.

my guts tell me this....

In the recent General Elections..Haryana mainly voted for the BJP....

Haryana also has the biggest Sikh population outside Punjab...and most Sikhs didnt swing toward Modi in the elections...

So maybe he HOPES of consolidating the Haryana Sikh votes by setting up HSGPC , in the coming Haryana state polls. To capitalize on the grouses of Haryana Sikhs have towards SGPC in short. To win their hearts in short and counter the Badal Akalis influence in Haryana.

Revenue from Haryana Gurughars is managed and goes to SGPC......

SGPC will no more be getting the revenue from Haryana Gurughars....hence, the objection.

Regardless, anything that makes Badal scream in horror :omg: .........I like it! :excited: :excited: :excited:

Look at the video of hooda when he announced his decision. Majority of his audience were not even Sikhs.

Haryana (former Punjab) is always a big problem for us.

Agreed that sgpc is big problem but having more divisions is not going to reduce our problems but it will create more.

This means less power to SGPC as HGPC will be running its own Gurdwara's. Maybe this is a good thing since SGPC is rotten to the bone. HGPC needs to make sure it does a good job. All major committes need to work together. Its obvious at the moment they do not and that they are at each others necks which is terribly bad for the worsening situation in Punjab

The congress is behind this breakup and they are doing this by taking advantage of our grievances with Badal. The congress is the biggest enemy of the Sikhs. Even before partition when Sikhs were carrying out the morchas for the liberation of Gurdwaras, the congress did not like Sikhs liberating their Gurdwaras and asked Sikhs to direct their manpower under the leadership of the congress and said they will give Gurdwaras to Sikhs after independence. But Sikhs like Kartar Singh Jhabbar did not trust the Hindu leadership of the congress party and refused to follow this and freed the Gurdwaras and created the SGPC. After independence, the congress has repeatedly tried to take over SGPC by putting up it's own candidates. The recent congress candidates were under the command of the notorious Sarna who is a known congress asset (and is also now supporting this breakup). After repeatedly losing SGPC elections, the congress has finally decided to break SGPC. And congress leaders all over North India are not making a secret of their desire.

What will Sikhs achieve by creating HSGPC? I predict it will be no different and will be just as corrupt as current SGPC leadership as the DSGMC in Delhi is. On the other hand who is achieving their goal by breaking SGPC? it is the congress party. For the Sikhs. We do not even realize how we are being played here by our biggest enemy. Just to hurt Badal we are ready to even shoot ourselves in the foot by supporting the breakup of SGPC! SGPC is not Badal, and neither will it always be under the control of the Badals, but once an organisation or nation breaks apart, it almost never comes back together. This is the biggest tactical mistake we will make since we boycotted the elections in 1992. Sometimes when we think we are doing something very smart but we only end up doing our own Nuksaan.

good post bhaji - but im sure sgpc is under the noose of badal

which is why I wrote "SGPC is not Badal, and neither will it always be under the control of the Badals"

We are punishing SGPC because it is temporarily under Badal's control. Before Badal there was SGPC and after Badal it will also be there. So we need to stop thinking Badal and SGPC is one and the same. Tomorrow will we support breakup or partition of Punjab or punish Punjab because it is currently(and temporarily) under the political control of Badal? We are self inflicting injuries on our own selves just to hurt Badal.

    • Part of the problem is the hostilities between India and Pakistan. If the border were open, Amritsar would easily become a huge trading city. Secondly, the National Highways Authority of India is constructing a new 6-lane expressway from Kashmir, through Amritsar/Jalandhar/Ludhiana to Dehli which will be part of the Ludhiana-Delhi-Kolkatta Industrial Corridor.  Maps of the New Silk Road show Kolkata as a key part of the "road". The Punjab to Kolkata expressway and rail connections will fulfill the ability to hook up to the New Silk Road.  In addition, while crossing to Pakistan via AH1 (Asian Highway 1) is difficult, India does connect to AH1 on the other side, towards the East. Finally, Punjab can trade with the world via Mundra port in Gujurat. Rail to Mundra, then sea onwards. Dubai is very close with a free port. If you send products to Iran, there are ground links onward to Europe.
    • Yeah, that's one possibility. Another I initially thought is that it's a Muslim trying to gather info. But then, you might ask, how does he know about Sikh textual sources. Well, you'd be surprised at their resourcefulness. A final possibility is he's a weak Sikh who was asked a question by a non-Sikh and now he's suddenly feverishly wondering where it's "written" that you can't marry a young child. To the latter, I would say, you're looking in the wrong spot. Gurbani isn't a 1428 page rulebook, like Leviticus or the Vedas: ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪ ਬੀਚਾਰਦੇ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ The Simritis and Shastras discriminate between charity and sin, but know not the essence of the Real Thing. Without the Guru, they know not the essence of the Reality, know not the essence of the Reality. Anand Sahib.
    • You're confusing two different things: One is merely adding starch to a turban to get a certain feel to the fabric. The other is tying your turban once and taking it off like a hat. It is this that people have a problem with. What's wrong with it is that Rehit says to tie your turban afresh every time. If you ask, "Where is that written?", it's written in Bhai Nand Lal ji's Rehitnama. @ipledgeblue didn't just make it up. Umm, no, bro. We're not evangelical Christians like President George W Bush of the US claiming to "talk to God" who told him to invade Iraq. "Speaking to him directly" basically ends up being doing whatever you feel like with the excuse that Guru ji told you to do it. If you still want to take your turban off like a hat, feel free to do so, but don't claim that it's Rehit.
    • You don't need to wear either a pag or dumalla in the gym. You can simply wear a meter or 1.5m small turban (gol pagg or round turban). It doesn't come off.
    • The reason you don't see anything wrong with it is because like a fish in water, you grew up in Western culture and imbibed it fully. It's very difficult to for parents to inculcate traditional culture while in the West. The reason there is a problem is because a kiss between a man and wife is a sexual act (I didn't say it's coitus, but it's still sexual.) By contrast a kiss between a mother and a child, for example, is not sexual. And in our culture, sexual acts are not allowed in public. Goras do allow it. And that's also the reason they have gay pride parades now with people walking around naked with children in attendance and so forth.
