Why is there ritualism in Sikhism?

Recommended Posts

So yes, its been 3 years since I came on this forum, I have become more and more interested in my Sikhi, and such, but I have realized that we are doing some things that Sikhism told us not to do. For example, not to have idols, and stones, and just worship to the formless god, yet we have portraits of our Guru's, and in some homes, we do mathadek to them. Isn't this a forum of ritualism where we think the Guru's are holy in someway, yet Guru Nanak said that he wasn't special he was the Humble Servant of God, yet we bow down to the pictures of them. Isn't god formless and that he is everywhere.

Here is another issue, in the news, people often consider Sikh's travel to Pakistan as "Sikh Pilgrims", in Sikhism, but we are not. I notice that when I go to the Gurdwara people often walk around the Guru Granth Sahib as some sort of ritual. I noticed it today, I just followed my father and walked around the Guru Granth sahib, clockwise which seems fishy..  Its like a Hindu tradition of walking around the fire which is ritualism and a superstition which is against Sikhi, well its called Lavan I reckon which they do in weddings. This is concerning as Sikhism prohibits these type of things, and I am having a feeling that certain cultural influences are leaking into Sikhism. For example, there have been reports of idols, of Guru Nanak in markets and such. This is really concerning, and I hope there will be a way to solve this issue.

Great to hear that, hope to see more of you on the forum.

That's good, but I would want to warn you that some people fall into the mistake of thinking that they have realized the Truth of Sikhism, and everybody for the last 500 years has been doing it wrong. I would urge you not to fall into that trap.

I would not say that mere paintings of the Gurus should be banned, but you're right that some foolish Sikhs do bow to them, and they should absolutely not.

Mostly, these are people who don't have a single gutka in the house. If you have a gutka, place it on a high shelf, and you can bow and do ardas while facing it.

Instead of "ritualism" I think you might mean to say "idol worship". Anyways, not it's not idol worship to think the Gurus are holy in some way.

The Gurus are holy. Forget the Guru, even those who merely serve the Guru are holy, and so are their parents:

ਧਨੁ ਜਨਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਇਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥

Dhhan Jananee Jin Jaaeiaa Dhhann Pithaa Paradhhaan ||

Blessed is the mother who gave birth; blessed and respected is the father of one who serves the True Guru and finds peace.

His arrogant pride is banished from within.

Standing at the Lord's Door, the humble Saints serve Him; they find the Treasure of Excellence. ||1||

So, if the mere servants of the Guru are holy, how holy do you think the Guru himself would be? Answer: Pure holiness.

Not only are the Gurus holy, their parents and their lineage is holy, too:

ਸਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਭਈ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੀ ਜਿਥੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

Saa Dhharathee Bhee Hareeaavalee Jithhai Maeraa Sathigur Baithaa Aae ||

That land, where my True Guru comes and sits, becomes green and fertile.

ਸੇ ਜੰਤ ਭਏ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

Sae Janth Bheae Hareeaavalae Jinee Maeraa Sathigur Dhaekhiaa Jaae ||

Those beings who go and behold my True Guru are rejuvenated.

Dhhan Dhhann Pithaa Dhhan Dhhann Kul Dhhan Dhhan S Jananee Jin Guroo Janiaa Maae ||

Blessed, blessed is the father; blessed, blessed is the family; blessed, blessed is the mother, who gave birth to the Guru.

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, who worships and adores the Naam; He saves Himself, and emancipates those who see Him.

O Lord, be kind, and unite me with the True Guru, that servant Nanak may wash His feet. ||2||

Raag Gauri Guru Ram Das

Now, if Guru Nanak Dev ji were to appear right now in front of you, would you matha tek and wash their feet? If so, great. If not, sorry to say, bro, but you don't have the level of devotion and love that a Sikh is supposed to have. It say right there in Gurbani that a Sikh's mentality is of a humble servant wanting to wash the Guru's feet.

You're confusing two different things. We're not supposed to bow down to pictures of Guru Sahib, we're suppose to bow down to the actual Guru Sahib (currently Guru Granth Sahib ji).

At the same time, the fact that Guru Nanak ji say they were not special means nothing.

That's what Christian missionaries say. They say that since Guru Nanak ji called themselves "neech", therefore he was lowly. No, Guru Sahib was not lowly. Guru Sahib only called themselves lowly out of humility, which is a Gurmat virtue.

Guru Nank Dev ji was and is Satguru. Satguru is everything. Satguru is God. Satguru is the creator. Satguru is the grantor of wishes and boons. He is the grantor of spiritual bliss.

Satguru Nanak ji is not "nothing special".

In order to advance the conversation, can I ask whether you bow down to Guru Granth Sahib ji, like every other Sikh does?

Again, this was for humility. Anyways, before we talk about other stuff you said, you need to reflect on and acknowledge the status of Guru in Sikhism. Read the following verses with humility and purity of mind:

Bro, there's no need to quote a whole long post if you're just replying to a single sentence.

Anyway, yes, actually worship the 10 Gurus, and also Guru Granth Sahib. It's the same thing. Guru Nanak ji = Guru Gobind Singh ji = Guru Granth Sahib.

So, to continue the conversation, do you or do you not acknowledge that we are commanded to worship the Guru?

Or, if you want to get into definitions, fine, define worship. Or if you don't want to use that English word, the actual word used in Gurbani is pooja. So do you acknowledge to we are to do pooja of Guru Sahib?

Keep searching Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji to find where Guru Sahib says to bow down to him.

The Gurbani you provided says Vaheguru is everywhere. You took this truthful Bani lesson from Guru Nanak dev ji.  Yet you are turning around and saying don't bow down to the Guru who gave you this truthful Bani.  Any person can make up any statements about Vaheguru. But all the statements will be only opinions because it is not being given directly from Vaheguru to the person. A person can come along and say Vaheguru is everywhere and it will not be a true statement because the person is only making a guess and does not know with certainty. The teacher can't see Vaheguru. However if a Sikh is told by a non sikh, God is everywhere.  The Sikh will say dhan Satguru (true master) Sri Guru Nanak dev ji taught this and its only true for me because I received this teaching from the Guru.  The nonsikh is still in the dark because hes only repeating or making his own judgements without any faith in Dhan Satguru Nanak dev ji/Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.  When Sri Guru Nanak dev ji spoke Gurbani, he was not making guesses but is Akal Purakh himself. Same goes as he wrote Gurbani down and gave Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji teaches to the world. Gurbani also says Guru Nanak dev ji is the GURU and NIRANKAR (Vaheguru).

If you never have heard or read Gurbani, how do you know what is a true statement about Vaheguru or not? Take the vedas for example.  What in there is true and false?  We humans don't know.  We can only see the Naam radiating from everywhere in creation when we are blessed by Dhan Sri Guru Nanak dev ji.    It is only after Sri Guru Nanak dev ji coming to this world did we receive the truth and now we can separate what is Gurmat and manmat.

Going around Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is also a virtues deed.  It brings the teaching of the Guru is the main focus of my life.

In short, Gurmat supports both:

1. Sarguna/shabad -Personal God- personification/devotion/ glorification of personal God/Guru-Sri guru granth sahib ji, sri dasam granth sahib, shastars-see nine types of bhagti, history)

2. Nirguna (impersonal God all prevading Vahiguru by concentrating on shabad via abhyaas/ meditation, contemplating and abiding on wisdom-gyan of gurbani and one spontaneously naturally- abiding, living and being, Jot saroop- Non dual all pervading Awareness- Vahiguru operating or living from natural way of being.

This is to help all seekers who are at various different phases of spirituality or state in their life without loosing main aim of merging back in Vahiguru( Gobind Millan ki eh teri bariya)/ Man tu jot saroop hai apna mool painchain ||

    • WJKK WJKF Sangat Ji, I bought a brand new medium Artisan Kirpan (8.7 inches) from https://thekhalsaraj.com/products/black-g10-ultra-durable-kirpans 2 months ago, and it is in unused condition. I bought it 2 months ago and it is in unused condition, with everything that came with it still fully sealed. I even paid extra to get it ੴ ਸਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ  laser engraved on the blade. This cost me £370 including shipping from the USA. It is in brand new condition, but I no longer need it since I have been gifted a new Buddha Dal-made Pesh Kabz for free. I am selling it for £250 even though it is in brand new condition - it is a first-hand Kirpan. From the official website, it costs £370. The handle is indestructable G10 fiberglass, wielded to a razor sharp blade (edge and tip) which is engraved with the custom Gurbani. Please reply if any Singh/Kaur here would like to buy it - it's 100% first hand but £120 reduced price. Includes a an embroidered padded case for airport travel, a blank certificate of ownership, maintenance brochure and a beautifully decorated black/grey adjustable Gatra.   I sent this advert out to a few places, and also asked some retailers if they'd like it, so it may go soon. Please do reply if anybody is interested, more than happy to answer questions too! (Note: the pic is from Google but is exactly what the Kirpan and Gatra both look like - the one I have is still in the packaging).
    • WJKK WJKF Sangat Ji, I bought a brand new Artisan Kirpan (pic below) from https://thekhalsaraj.com/products/black-g10-ultra-durable-kirpans. It is the medium option (8.7 inches). Please reply if any Singh/Kaur here would like to buy it - it's 100% first hand but £120 less than normal. Comes with a padded foam case for airport travel, a blank certificate of ownership, maintenance brochure and a beautifully decorated black/grey adjustable Gatra.   I sent this advert out to a few places, and also asked some retailers if they'd like it, so it may go soon. Please do reply if anybody is interested, more than happy to answer questions too! (below's a pic of the exact model, but not the Kirpan I have, as it's still in its box. I've only unsheathed it once to inspect it, and I can confirm it's in perfect condition).
    • WJKK WJKF! How long will this forum remain online for in a readable & accessible state? It appears susceptible to shut-down. It would be a shame if all the forum's content from over the decades is lost in such an event due to servers hosting this forum shutting-down. This forum, whilst not currently active, remains an important repository of the Sikh religion online. It also is a fundamental aspect of Sikh cyber culture that existed from the early Internet period from the 2000's to 2010's before the domination by big social-media sites that consolidated the community. Thus, have the web-masters of this forum considered archiving this forum's contents before it is lost forever? I can assist you in this by saving the content to the Internet Archive on your behalf. Please let me know your thoughts about such an endeavour and I hope you may consider the possibility of archiving the forum for posterity. Future generations of Sikhs and Sikh researchers will be grateful. Kind regards, Theth Panjabi (you can find me on IG at theth.panjabi and on X/Twitter at ThethPanjabi)
    • Video on the tale, gurdwara, and manuscript: link As the story goes, during the Vadda Ghallughara genocide against the Sikhs perpetrated by the Afghan Durrani Empire on 5–6 February 1762, not only were Sikh lives lost, but our original Damdami Sahib Bir recension was also lost in that carnage. However, over the years I have spent researching our history, many claimed it was taken back to Afghanistan by Ahmad Shah Abdali's troops as loot whilst others said it was secretly hidden somewhere by the Singhs for safe-keeping. As of today, it remains untraceable and I presume it is gone for good. However, I came across a couple of articles stating that there were actually around five master-copies of the original Damdami Bir, with one of these copies being safeguarded by the jatha of Bhai Sudha Singh of the Shaheedan Misl. "It is said that the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh had got five birs written at Damdama Sahib. The bani (writings) of the ninth Sikh master Guru Tegh Bahadur were incorporated in these birs. These five birs were given to different jathas (groups) of Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh to be safely installed. One bir was being taken by Sudha Singh who was leading a jatha of 19 Sikhs, when Abdali'[s] forces stormed Kup-Rohira and killed thousands of Sikhs. Though all 19 Sikhs were massacred by Abdali, Sudha Singh somehow brought the bir to Kuthala. Since then it has been kept at village gurdwara." (Times of India, 2012) The gurdwara today [Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Sudha Singh Ji in Kuthala] has a certain historical manuscript that they claim is one of the five master-copies of the Damdama recension. You can see close-up shots of the bir in the video posted. I will also share close-up images of its folios in the comment section. I will also provide a faithful English translation of the video's narration so non-Punjabi speakers may benefit from this post. I will leave the question on whether this bir is authentic or not to your judgement but I will provide my own analysis below.   English translation of the video's narration: The Guru-form Guru Khalsa Holy Congregation (Sadh Sangat) Ji, Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. The Gurdwara Sahib that the congregation is currently beholding is situated in Village Kuthala, near Malerkotla, in the Sangrur district of Punjab. A very great treasure is preserved within this Gurdwara Sahib. The history of this Gurdwara Sahib is very closely related to the Vada Ghalughara (The Great Holocaust) that took place in February 1762. Baba Sudha Singh Ji, the third head of the Shaheedi Misl, arrived at this location considering it a safe place. He brought with him that sacred holy scripture (Saroop) which the Tenth Father, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, had personally dictated to Bhai Mani Singh Ji on the holy land of Damdama Sahib. Upon arriving, he personally performed the last rites (cremation) of 19 martyred Sikhs at this site. As he prepared to leave to take command of the Jatha (the Sikh contingent), the sacred holy scripture he had brought was enshrined at this very location. At that time, this place was known as Dera Jaga Sidh, but nowadays, a very beautiful building stands here in the name of Gurdwara Sahib Shaheedi. The sacred holy scriptures that were enshrined at that time are today ceremoniously displayed (Prakashwan) with great respect every Channi Dashmi (the tenth day of the bright lunar fortnight) for the congregation to behold. Devotees from within the country and abroad arrive to catch a glimpse of these sacred scriptures and receive the Guru's blessings. Every year, an annual Gurmat Samagam (religious congregation) is held for five consecutive days in memory of the martyrs of the Great Holocaust, concluding on Magh Sudi Dashmi. Furthermore, a book containing the full detailed history—titled after Shaheed Baba Sudha Singh Ji and the Hand-written Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji—was released in February 2013 by the managing volunteers based on historical research. It was released by the 14th head of the Shaheedi Misl, Singh Sahib Baba Makhan Singh Ji (the current head of Baba Bakala Sahib), the Meet Jathedar Singh Ji, and Sant Gurdev Singh Ji of Anandpur Sahib (the current head). The congregation can obtain spiritual benefit by reading it. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.   My analysis: In my humble opinion (which may be incorrect), this bir is not a master-copy of the Damdami Bir. It more closely resembles the highly-decorated birs of the Kashmiri-style that were created during the reign of the Sikh Empire in the first half of the 19th century. We can see this bir has highly illuminated and illustrated angs (folios), which took the great skill of a master artisan to make, which required resources to pay and patronize. Usually, the manuscripts during the Sikh Empire were the most elaborately decorated, as this was when the Sikhs were at a high-point, masters of the land, possessing vast amounts of resources that they could use to fund such endeavors. Therefore, whilst the story may be true and a master-copy of the Damdami Bir recension may have once been at this location, I am not convinced that this particular manuscript is it. I may be mistaken and I am open to constructive criticism. 1633648456_GurdwaraHistory.mp4
