Here's a translation of Ganda Singh's foreward to his edition of Gursobha I did years ago. You might find it interesting in terms of how Gursobha was discovered.

food of the Sieks is of the coarsest kind, and such as the poorest people in Hindustan use from necessity. Bread baked in ashes, and soaked in a mash made of different sorts of pulse, is the best dish, and such as they never indulge in but when at full leisure; otherwise vetches and tares, hastily parched, is all they care for. They abhor smoking tobacco, for what reasons I cannot discover, but intoxicate themselves freely with spirits of their own country manufacture: a cup of the last they never fail taking after a fatigue at night. Their dress is extremely scanty; a pair of long blue drawers,2

Seiks receive Proselytes of almost every Cast, a point in which they: differ most materially from the Hindoos. To initiate Mahommedans into their mysteries, the prepare a Dish of Hog's legs, which the Converts are obliged to partake of previous to admission. They have forbid absolutely the use of the Hookah, but they are as liberal in the use of Bang, and Ophiam, as their Neighbours. They are not prohibited the use of Animal food of any kind, excepting Beef, which they are rigidly scrupulous in abstaining from. They never shave either Head or Beard; They sometimes wear yellow, but the prevailing Colour of their Cloths is deep blue; They make their Turbans capaciously large, over which they frequently wear a piece of pliable Iron Chain or Network.

Seiks are remarkably fond of the flesh of the jungle Hog, which they kill in chance, this food is allowable by their law. They likewise eat of mutton and fish, but these being deemed unlawful, the Bramins will not partake, leaving those who chuse to transgress their institutes to answer for themselves. In the city or in the field the Seiks never smoke tobacco; they are not however averse to drinking spirituous liquors, in which they sometimes indulge to an immoderate excess; and they likewise freely take opium, Bang5 and other intoxicating drugs. In their convivial parties each man is compelled to drink out of his own vessel.

I wouldn't advise anyone to use the above information as justification for taking opiates btw folks!

This is a big problem these days, and not only with opium based illegal drugs like heroin, but also legal opiate based pharmaceuticals - which doctors seem to by giving out like candy causing lots of addiction issues.

Dear dallysingh

Can u plz provide reference from prem sumarag about sukha or afeem?

Is there any other source that u r aware of?

I wouldn't worry about others (of which there are plenty):

The Gursobha reference is the most significant because it is purportedly a document from a darbari kavi of dasmesh pita's. If the work is what it claims, it's a source contemporary to dasmesh pita. I notice the use of the afeem seems to be associated with a long horseback journey (southwards) being made by Singhs?

This might give us a clue as to the context of the usage?

    • Punjabi Sikh family killed in California   WIONEWS Website California | Updated: Oct 06, 2022, 10:03 (IST)     All four members of an India-origin Sikh family, including an eight-month-old girl, were found dead in an orchard in California, the Merced County sheriff said   Briefing media on Wednesday night, Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said a farm worker in the area found the bodies, which were found relatively close together. He said that the Department of Justice crime lab is going to probe the crime scene, adding that they "don't know all the facts yet", reports ABC News. Terming it "horribly senseless," the sheriff said they are finding out the cause of the murder. Warnke further said he spoke to the suspect, who is in custody and admitted in the hospital, but did not provide additional details.   Among the deceased are: eight-month-old Aroohi Dheri, her parents —27-year-old mother Jasleen Kaur and 36-year-old father Jasdeep Singh —, and the baby’s uncle, 39-year-old Amandeep Singh. The police said that the couple and the baby were kidnapped at gunpoint from a convenience store they own in Merced County in Northern California. The police said that the couple and the baby were kidnapped at gunpoint from a convenience store they own in Merced County in Northern California. They hailed from Harsi Pind in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Police found out about their kidnapping after they discovered a vehicle owned by one of the family members on fire on late Monday, which led them to determine that they had been kidnapped. According to a news release, detectives received information on Tuesday morning about the accused, 48-year-old Jesus Salgado, after he used their ATM card in Atwater in Merced County. On Tuesday, the man attempted to take his own life prior to “law enforcement involvement" and is currently in critical condition receiving medical attention, the Merced County Sheriff's Office said.
    • If I'm not wrong ( I may make some mistakes in what I write in the following sentences, do cross check)  Deep Sidhu's party Waris Panjab De is made to handle issues faces by the Panth and Punjab, example ensuring electricity in villages, parchaar of Sikhi, clean water supply and so on. Amritpal Singh Sandhu is the Jathedar of the party now. He came to Punjab a few months ago and his getting this attention because of how much he is attending to Panth issues. He took Amrit  a few days ago if I'm not wrong, at Anandpur Sahib and his parchaar of Sikhi was so powerful that approximately 950 Singhs took Amrit with him. He is in the support of Khalistan as well. So because of all the issues he is talking about, it's making a big effect on the youth and people are joining him in big numbers. So because he is joining Sikhs with Sikhi, there are 2 narratives being spread about him, "he is an ISI funded agent" or he is a " Indian government agent". But in true fact, he is Vaheguru ji's Agent 😀🙏 Bhul Chuk Maf ji 🙏 Vaheguru ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fateh
    • What I don't understand is how come he is getting all this attention? Is it something that he did or said? Or is he related to some popular personalities perhaps? Also, what is the objective of Deep Sidhu's organisation that he's said to be heading?

    • You are falling for their trap. They want us to be divided.
