Is not the whole truth still lying?

Dear Sikh community,

 

I am not a Sikh, but I have always had very much respect for the religion and always found Sikh people to be very honest, knowing as I do how important that is in Sikhism.

Unfortunately, a Sikh lady is currently gossiping about me, slandering me and not telling the full truth about something.

 

She asked me some very personal questions, and because she was Sikh I thought I could trust her and shared honest answers- she has now been showing these to people I trust and claiming that I made a pass at her. In fact the opposite is true, which I can prove, but I do not wish to do so as my religion also does not permit gossip, so I am relying on God to bring the truth out in the end (which I believe he will).

 

This person believes (has told me! ) that because she has not told direct lies and only lied by implication and half truth that she is following her religion properly.

 

In my religion, this would not be the case- in fact trying to "get around" the rules to do harm to others is considered almost worse than breaking them entirely.

From my reading, I believe that the same is true in Sikhism (and I know that gossip, slander and betrayal is certainly not encouraged by Sikhs)

Am I right, or is she behaving as a good Sikh as she maintains she is?

I am not looking to use this information against her at all- as I say, God will show the truth- but I just need to know for my learning and peace of mind that Sikhism doesn't tolerate this sneaky behaviour (or indeed if it does).

Of course sikhi doesn't allow slander and telling half truths with a malicious intent is obviously not encouraged and accepted

Maybe follow it up with something like "Please. Nobody has to be to blame, but we must be Truthful."

Most Sikhs are cultural Sikhs, they are not practicing Sikhs,  which means they Sikhs because their grandparents or ancestors were Sikhs. Much like how every other person in the UK is a Christian yet they never go Church or pray and break most of the commandments. 

I never understand why people are so surprised when they come across people of "faith" being rude or behaving badly, their just people like any other people.

Why is anyone surprised?

You are absolutely right bro. And. Sikhs of all people have maintained their reputation the best thus far to those who know. May it stay that way always. 

I can understand and apprecaite how our friend had a sense of security. 

Far warning to non Sikhs. If you are trying to date one, either you can't, or they aren't as Sikh as you thought, so expect some normal human shortcomings and modern thinking in that second bunch.

Most people are just cultural Sikhs or cultural Christians etc  They simply call themselves Sikhs or Christians etc because that just happens to be the religious tradition they are born into!

Like you come across a lot of Sikhs who have parents from two different faiths saying that they are "half Hindu and half Sikh" or that they are "half Christian and half Sikh" lol      

This has been going on for some time now. A very very long tome age when I was In primary school there was a girl and her dad was Muslim while her mum was Sikh and the girl used to say she is "half Muslim and half Sikh" lol!   both her parents were non-religious and never attended Mosque or Gurdwara or any religious celebrations, but she still called herself "half Muslim and half Sikh"  

I'm coming across more and more Atheist Sikhs. They are Atheists but still call themselves Sikhs, they still associate themselves with ithiaas, fire works on Diwali, eating samosas at nagar kirtans etc 

"religious" people are just like any other people, they just carry a religious tag with them.

those half and halfs make me laugh. more times over they're just coconuts. You can't be half a religion LOL. You know which type I find the most annoying though are those athiest sikh types who are anti Sikh freedom and just want sikhs to assimilate wo what ever culture be it Western or indian I know few guys like this.

They'll be so anti khalistan and say this and that is backwards but still wanna stick to nagar keertan and lecture non sikhs about how great sikhs are when it suits them
