It will happen eventually but probably when the Ulster Protestants become a minority in Northern Ireland.

They are the staunch unionists to the UK.

However, they are probably going to realise that the rest of UK could not give a monkeys whether Nothern Irelaid remains a part of the UK or not.

Apparently a lot of the Catholics want to remain in the UK, enough that they'll need a massive majority to be able to get over 50% of the vote

Sinn Fein deputy leader Michelle O'Neill is urging the Irish government to prepare for a united Ireland as a result of Brexit.

She says the Tories and DUP need to recognise that the controversial Irish Sea border is the consequence of their own decisions.

Ms O'Neill, who could be the next first minister of Northern Ireland, believes the UK's exit from the EU will lead to a referendum on reunification.

She said: "Well I certainly think we're closer than we've ever been previously and I think now is the time to plan and that's why we're saying to the Irish government, now is the time for them to make the preparation.

"Let's not fall into the traps that have been fallen into in terms of Brexit. Make the preparation, let's start to have a healthy conversation about things that matter every day to people.

"What does the health service look like in a united Ireland? What does education look like in a united Ireland?"

"If that last couple of years of Brexit has taught us anything, it's that the Tories will never prioritise the interests of people here, whether you be Unionist, Nationalist, or other," she added.

One of the things which has always puzzled me is how the Irish Catholics who had to migrate to the USA, Canada and Australia were so lukewarm to supporting their people in Ireland. One can understand that in the first few decades they would have not have the resources to support their brethren in Ireland but when the Irish became a large minority abroad and started to take over some of the reins of power. There were some Irish who were politically aware and supported Irish freedom such as the Finnians who incidentally had some connection to Maharaja Dalip Singh as well as the Ghadr party.

Although the Irish abroad supported the struggle for the civil rights of the Catholics in Northern Ireland and sent money through NORAID, yet personally I think the Irish politicians and leaders abroad did not utilise all their power to support their people back home. There is actually a scene in the film Black Mass about the Irish mafia leader Whitey Bulger who sent weapons by ship to Ireland in the 1980s. This scene shows him welcoming an IRA commander into Boston and the commander thanking him for his support for his 'old country'.

Oh. Cool story.
