Loss of faith in the Maharaja The internal political policy pursued by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh went against Sikh interests. Major points of differences were that the Maharaja had: 1. Delegated too much authority of the government to Dogras who were insincere and disloyal to the Sikhs. 2. Appointed relatives of his cronies to important posts instead of selecting competent persons. 3. Developed misunderstanding with his sons by listening to the misinformation given by the Dogras. Note: Later, it was found that Akali Ji was right and justified in asking the Maharaja not to place all his confidence in the Dogras alone. The Dogras had a secret understanding wit…

In 1986, I visited Vancouver on the invitation of the Khalsa Diwan Society, and addressed the Sangat in the Ross street Gurdwara there. The success of the discussion motivated the Gurdwara management to start a regular Sikh heritage class every Saturday for the Canada-born youth. The class became very popular because the presentations were made in English. The word spread to Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. A father with his two children came from there to attend the class. After the lecture, he wanted me to visit Victoria and address the students of the school where his son was studying. He briefed me that the staff and students were curious to kno…

GURNAM SINGH - ADDICTED By Harjit Singh Lakhan My friend Gurnam Singh in Birmingham told me his story at a kids camp July 2002. He used to be a drug pusher and addict on the streets of manchester. He ran away from home aged 13 and lived with thieves and druggies. He kidnapped, raped and did other unspeakable things in order to get money for drugs. Only his mother believed in him, that he was better than that. She used to see him once a month and go to gurdwara do shoe seva with a handkerchief and wipe that on his forehead while he was knocked out drunk or drugged out. Once he even put a knife to her throat because she wouldn’t give him money for drugs. One day she told…

The mind is perhaps the most powerful tool we have in this world, and more often than not can be the sole thing to prevent us from walking on the path of Sikhi. It’s a tough game to play with the mind, but we just need to have faith, and push… Thought I would share this with you. At times during our bhagti, we find our mind wondering, thinking things that we never imagined we’d think – things that we don’t even realise enter our consciousness. – We suddenly remember that we have a million and one other things to be getting on with instead of our paath. We start to plan what we’re going to do once we’ve finished our paath – heck, sometimes we start thinking about what w…

This is during the time when Amritdhari Gursikhs were very rare, when people would stand aside and bow upon seeing an Amritdhari Gursikh. Sikhi was very alive in the Indian army gursikhs. Taksal was almost never heard of outside of Punjab but it was in chardee kala unlike today. Taksal had a very strict rule. Jatha would never go to anyone’s house uninvited. Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji was once invited by someone to have “jall paani”. So Sant Ji went with jatha of few gursikhs. The family was very religious so they did seva with pure heart. Sant Ji said the jatha will have smundar (milk) and then they will leave. So they put milk on the gas and after few minutes one girl put…

Maharaja Ranjit Singh: The Sikh Ruler, in the eyes of non-Sikhs According to the famous historian Carlyle, a worthy sovereign should be judged from a sole factor as to how he employs his sword after being victorious. ********** Le Griffin writes that: "Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled his kingdom exactly according to the Sikh way of life and Sikhism considers everyone as friends and talks about the welfare of all irrespective of caste and creed." ********** The spirit of Gurbani couplet, "The one Lord is the Father of all and we are the children of the one Lord rules supreme in every Sikh heart." Charles Hugal, writes in his book, "Travels in Kashmir and Punjab", that…
